How I Really Dressed for My Day – Early October 2020

Hello, and welcome to Dressed for My Day. If you stopped in for a little style inspiration, you’ll get the real thing today. I’m sharing how I really dressed for my days recently.

If you’ve been around here more than five minutes, you know that I’m a firm believer in getting dressed for our days. But that doesn’t mean we have to put on the Ritz every day. For me, getting dressed each day simply means putting a little thought into an outfit that works for that particular day’s activities and setting.

So most of the outfits I’m sharing today are indeed quite casual. I spend most of my days pounding away at the computer keyboard, doing everyday things around the house and getting out for the occasional errand or lunch.

Here’s how I really dressed for my day recently.

Girlfriend Jeans & Cotton Sweater

I wore this first outfit to work from home and then run a few errands in the afternoon.

I frequently gravitate toward my girlfriend jeans when I want to feel comfortable but also want to wear denim. Unfortunately, Talbots (where I got my jeans) isn’t carrying girlfriend jeans right now. But I noticed a lot of my readers ordered these jeans when I talked about girlfriend jeans in this recent post.

A lot of this outfit is made up of my favorite go-tos, such as my classic hoop earrings and my Tory Burch hobo bag. But the main thing I want to share with you about this look is my 100% cotton pullover. I reach for this lightweight sweater so frequently, and it goes with just everything. I’m hoping J.Jill gives us a good discount for Columbus Day. We’ll see! The cotton pullover also comes in a pretty red and a nice blue.

This may be the debut of my leopard print Madewell Sidewalk sneakers, too. Unlike my other Sidewalk Sneakers (for which I sized down), I find these to run true to size.

Work from Home Jeans & a Tee

Like I said, I didn’t put on the Ritz to work from home. In this next outfit I simply paired some comfortable black jeans (that I cut off for a raw hem and a better length) with a basic white tee. Then, because we’ve been having cool weather here in Ohio, I topped it with a cream colored zip-up hoodie.

I think the outfit above is a reminder that looking pulled together and modern doesn’t have to be complicated or fussy. A simple tee, jeans and modern hoodie can look very contemporary and effortlessly stylish.

I Have Expensive Taste

Hahaha! It’s not that I like expensive things. I don’t! But unfortunately, a lot of the things my eyes are drawn to are, indeed, expensive. Argh! Fortunately, I’m pretty good at getting bargains. I bought everything I’m wearing here either in this year’s Nordstrom Anniversary Sale or a previous year’s sale for 50% off.

While my Veronica Beard sweater is so pricey I won’t even recommend it (although it is very soft and pretty), this one by BP will achieve the same look. And it’s 50% off its already low price! I love my AG skinny jeans (similar jeans) and I highly recommend AG if you’re looking into premium denim. But you might want to start here where some of it is marked down.

I wore these Paul Green loafers to the mall and I must have gotten a dozen compliments on them. But, as I pointed out to each person who remarked on them, the greater treasure is the comfort. Wearing these loafers is like wearing your favorite bedroom slippers all day. And, while they’re still pricey, they are 50% off again. They won’t go lower. And they also come in black patent and toffee leather.

Church on Sunday Morning

This next look is also from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale. In fact, these items are back on sale, but they’re also depleted in sizes. Mainly I’m sharing this with you so you can see the beauty of a monochromatic look (although my selfie doesn’t do it justice).

I’m wearing a size Small in the Green wool & cashmere sweater, but I had to size up to a 12 (I usually wear an 8) in the green soft tailored crop pants. Both pieces feel luxurious and fit so beautifully. I plan to have them in my closet for years.

In fact, I’ve had my Michael Kors satchel in my possession now for almost three years, and I still use it frequently. A structured handbag is such an easy and lovely way to elevate a look. This bag is very similar and is marked down a little.

Work from Home Monday & Grocery Store

On Monday I hopped on Instagram stories and shared some nice things from Talbots when they announced a one-day (that turned into two-day) online only sale of 40% off sitewide. After trying this outfit on and sharing it on Instagram stories (the “fashion show” is all saved in my highlight reels under Talbots), I decided to wear this the rest of the day. It was so comfortable, but I also felt pulled together and autumnal. Ha!

Unfortunately the cardigan I’m wearing above sold out (unless they’ve restocked). But I also have a couple of these cardigans, and I love them every bit as much if not more. Also I tried on this cable cardi at J.Jill yesterday and it was yummy.

My denim jeggings, which feel and wear just like normal skinny jeans (I don’t know why they call them jeggings), and my denim shirt are also from Talbots. Church a Week Ago

Well this photo got out of order and I’m too lazy to go back and change things up. Ha! This is what I wore to church a week and a half ago. You can tell by my outfits whether I attended the more traditional service or the contemporary one. Hehehe! I wore one of our church’s logo shirts (I opted for a moisture-wicking polo shirt) over my favorite black pants (currently 26% off for a price match). The pants run true to size; I’m wearing an 8 comfortably.

Then I topped the look with my Levi’s denim jacket. I wore my brushed teardrop earrings in rhodium (silver) since the buttons on my jacket are brushed silver.

Athleisure Work From Home

This next outfit is what I wore Tuesday while editing and publishing the next day’s video. Tuesdays are always some kind of athleisure or loungewear outfit. That’s just how I roll. But I do try to still get makeup on and add a little jewelry. As I said in Tuesday’s post, the idea was to put on something in the AM that I could get out and walk in in the PM.

And sure enough! I finished my work a little earlier than normal Tuesday and got outside for a good walk around 5 p.m. I can definitively say that if I had not already been dressed for it, that walk would not have happened. I was so tired. But since I already had on my leggings, sports bra and athletic tank, I didn’t talk myself out of it. I just took off my earrings and cardigan, slipped on my running shoes and got out the door!

Trip to the Mall & Lunch

Finally, here’s what I wore yesterday. I just needed to get out of the house, so I took the opportunity to make some returns and grabbed lunch while I was out. I had a hankering to dress up a little, so I wore my brown cords and brown cashmere sweater with my brown sock boots (similar) for a pretty monochromatic look.

No, the browns aren’t the same. But that’s the beauty of a monochromatic look…they absolutely don’t have to be the same shade of your chosen color. Another key to pulling off this look is incorporating lots of textures. I wore corduroy, cashmere, suede and leather.

Blessed for My Day

Have you been looking for justice? We all have an innate desire for things to be fair, just, even equal. But the truth is, as much as we may desire justice, we will never find things to be completely just this side of heaven. You see, man’s idea of justice will always lack the real authority that is required to hand down a truly just judgment. We simply are not capable of that kind of impartiality.

But Jesus, while He was sent first to save the world, one day will return to judge the world. He is the fair and righteous and holy judge. And, John 5:30 tell us, Jesus is capable of judging accurately because His motives are pure and He never seeks to benefit Himself in any way. He only seeks to please the Father.

Right now we are in a battle in our country over how to make things fair, just for all. Regardless of where you are in that discussion, I urge you to turn your eyes to the only just judge, the One that the Father has appointed. Seek Him. Seek to please Him. Listen to Him. Point others to Him. The answers to all of our confusion over justice can be found in the person of Jesus Christ.

Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment. I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” ~ John 5:25-30
