Styling a Column of Denim

There once was a time when wearing denim on denim was considered gauche, but now wearing your blue jeans with another denim piece is definitely having a style moment. Today I’m sharing one of several ways you can enjoy wearing denim on denim this fall and winter by styling a column of denim underneath a third piece in a contrasting color. I’ll think you’ll like this denim and rich brown combination.

Any time we create a column of color by dressing in one color head to toe and then topping that monochromatic look with a third piece in a different color, we achieve a slenderizing and elongating look. So you can definitely do the same thing with denim.

In this previous post I created a column of black under this same Italian flannel blazer. In today’s outfit I’m wearing my Levi’s 721 high rise skinny jeans. But you could achieve a similar effect with any cut of jean, including boot cut, wide leg, straight or boyfriend jeans.

I do think this formula works best when you choose a denim shirt and jeans that are in a similar wash. The wash doesn’t have to match perfectly, mind you. In fact, if there is a little variation I think your outfit looks more authentic, more casual. But I would try to get the two washes close.

I paired my mid wash Levi’s 721 high rise skinny jeans with the denim shirt from Talbots. This 100% cotton shirt runs true to size and it is a major workhorse in my wardrobe year round.

By the way, I recently purchased the flannel Windsor pants that match this tortoiseshell brown blazer and they are dreamy. I’ll be sharing them in an upcoming post (or two!) I’m sure, but I wanted to go ahead and let you know that they run true to size and would be well worth purchasing if you buy one of the luxe Italian flannel blazers (which also run true to size). Talbots has a matching pair of pants for each of the four colors of the blazer.

I think the jewelry really contributes beautifully to this look, adding a little light and interest to this head to toe denim look. I’m wearing a convertible and adjustable bronze pendant necklace, my coin stretch bracelet (which is sadly sold out) and these gold tone circlet drop hoop earrings. This goldtone artisan cuff bracelet would work nicely with the necklace and earrings here.

You could create a similar look wearing a denim shirt or tunic untucked. But I really like the proportions created by tucking the shirt and adding a belt. I’m wearing this black and brown reversible leather belt on the brown side because I like how it coordinates with the jacket and my boots. But black would work well here, too. The belt fits true to size.

I purchased these brown suede sock booties at the end of the season last winter, and they have been such a smart and fun purchase. Sock booties are the easiest to wear under most any jean silhouette. These Marc Fisher booties are similar, but I absolutely did not pay anywhere near that price for them. If I were looking for some right now, I’d probably buy these from Everlane. They’re modern, functional and a fraction of the price. Plus, they’re available in so many colors!

I finished off the look with my Coach courier bag. It’s no longer available in the black (see how it has a caramel colored thread that coordinates beautifully with my brown pieces?), but it is still available in the sienna brown, and it’s 40% off.

Jesus doesn’t promise that life will be easy to navigate, but He does promise to walk through life with us, illuminating our paths as we go. Honestly, I’m grateful for that “little more light as we go” approach rather than the crystal clear visibility of the future we sometimes long for. I have encountered seasons of life that I would have run from if I’d known everything that lay ahead of me on the trail. I bet you have, too. By the same token, I would have missed out on seeing God work in amazing and mysterious ways if I had resisted the unseen future that lay ahead. And I would have missed out on blessings that could only be found in the shadows of those hard seasons.

But aren’t we grateful that, while the future sometimes seems dark and scary and difficult to us, Jesus does indeed offer all the light we need to walk through those seasons one step at a time? But don’t miss this, sweet sister. Jesus doesn’t just hold the light, point the light, offer light. He is the light. If we truly want to experience the illumination He offers, we must lean in hard and see Him. We must get to know Him, draw close to Him and follow hard after Him. Today let’s thank Jesus for being the Light of the world. I am grateful that He is the light of my little world and the whole big world, too.
