I love Christmas red and green. And I enjoy the multicolored lights, cheerfully decorated cookies, colorful packages and brilliant poinsettias of the season, too. But when it comes dressing for holiday gatherings and special moments I still enjoy reaching for neutrals. So today I’m sharing two holiday looks in sophisticated neutrals that I’ve put together with the help of Talbots, my go-to source for modern classic apparel and accessories. Make sure to shop their new arrivals page for some great holiday options.

Holiday Look in Golden Brown and Black

Holiday Looks in Neutrals
embellished snowflake tee // black corduroy jeggings // faux fur collar metallic down puffer vest // red crossbody bag // square stone earrings // square stones bracelet // embroidered flannel loafers

Oh, yes. I said neutrals. But I didn’t say boring. This first holiday outfit in neutrals absolutely sparkles. I’ve topped my black corduroy jeggings with a 100% cotton embellished snowflake tee.

TopTop

The acorn colored t-shirt features long sleeves, a crew neck and silver, gold and copper beading and metallic stitching. How festive is that? And yes, the tee is soft and comfy. Always a bonus. The tee is available in misses, petite and plus sizes.

I added another layer of sparkle, shine and sophistication with my metallic faux fur puffer vest. By the way, I sized down to a misses small in the vest for a more fitted silhouette, but if you want a vest that zips easily over multiple layers I suggest going with your true size. You can also choose between misses and petite sizes.

Holiday Looks

I love having black cords in my closet for mixing and matching all winter long. They’re slimming, but they also frame whatever festive top I pair with them. These are Talbots’ stretch corduroy jeggings and they offer a slim fit with plenty of stretch. They’re also available in four other colors. Talbots’ stretch straight leg cords also come in black, as well as an even wider variety of colors and sizes.

Corduroy Jeggings and Shoes

Oh, and check out how darling these embroidered flannel loafers are! They feature adorable pups in colors that coordinate beautifully with my outfit, but they also add a touch of whimsy. The Ryan loafers run true to size and are surprisingly quite comfortable right out of the box.

Jewelry

Because with a holiday look more truly is more, I added more sparkle to my festive outfit with square stone earrings and a coordinating square stones bracelet, both with gemstones and glittering crystals.

Holiday Style Tip: Create dazzling holiday looks in sophisticated neutrals, but add an unexpected pop of color in your shoes, handbag or jewelry.

Pop of color
embellished snowflake tee // black corduroy jeggings // faux fur collar metallic down puffer vest // red crossbody bag // square stone earrings // square stones bracelet // embroidered flannel loafers

I originally ordered the red pebbled leather satchel to add a pop of unexpected color to my neutral holiday outfits. But when it didn’t come in in time for my photo shoot, I grabbed this crossbody bag in red pop instead. I LOVE this bag. The full-grain Nappa leather is so soft and luxe. And the bag comes with two different straps, making it seasonless, versatile and so fun.

Holiday Looks in Black and Ivory

If you’ve been around Dressed for My Day long you know I love dressing in head to toe black. But I like how the Nordic inspired ivory Fair Isle design on my sweater adds splashes of festive light to the second of my two holiday looks.

Black and Ivory
ivory turtleneck // winter Fair Isle yoke sweater // black fleece-lined pants // comparable boots // ivory faux fur collar puffer vest // sterling silver snowflake earrings // keepsake bangle // red crossbody bag

I’m wearing the winter Fair Isle yoke sweater over an ivory turtleneck for added warmth and interest. The 95% cotton, 5% Spandex long sleeve turtleneck is such a nice winter wardrobe essential. It’s lightweight enough to fit nicely under sweaters, but substantial enough to wear alone, too. The turtleneck comes in several other neutrals, including black, indigo navy and white. But it’s also available in red and rosewood heather. Size selections include misses, petite, plus and petite plus. I appreciate that Talbots offers a full range of sizes in so many styles.

Fair Isle Sweater

The black Fair Isle sweater could absolutely be worn without an under layer, too. In fact, I wore it that way yesterday with a red skirt. It’s extremely soft and features a rich textured flat weave. It falls low on the hip and has a straight, but slimming silhouette.

Nordic Inspired sweater

Envisioning this outfit to be party chic but also suitable for outdoor festivities, I wore my black fleece-lined pants. Have you heard me mention how much I love, love, love these pants? Once or twice? Ha! Let me tell you again.

Fleece-Lined Pants

In my estimation, nothing beats these fleece-lined pants for outdoor activities this winter. They keep you warm, but they also have a slender silhouette, a double button and zipper enclosures, belt loops (should you desire to belt up!) and a front seam for a very polished look. They also have a discreet but stylish zipper cargo pocket, back zipper welt pockets and a little extra length so you can cuff them if you wish.

Wash these pants in the washing machine, but lay them flat to dry. I kid you not, they keep their shape, color and fit beautifully. Oh, I’m wearing mine right now, too!

Jewelry

Because I hoped to keep the look pared down and I wanted the Fair Isle design to be the focal point, I kept my jewelry very simple…but still festive. I’m wearing sterling silver snowflake earrings and a keepsake bangle featuring gold tone, silver tone and pearl insets.

I topped off this holiday look in neutrals with another chic faux fur collar puffer vest, this one in ivory. My black suede faux shearling trim boots are no longer available so I’m linking to alternatives in the shopping widget.

Black Look
ivory turtleneck // winter Fair Isle yoke sweater // black fleece-lined pants // comparable boots // ivory faux fur collar puffer vest // sterling silver snowflake earrings // keepsake bangle // red crossbody bag

My red crossbody bag again added just the right pop of color. Don’t you just love the way these two holiday looks in sophisticated neutrals came together? I think either outfit is perfect for a holiday gathering or fun outing to take in the winter sights. Plus, everything I’ve worn here can be worn beyond the holidays, too.

Blessed for My Day

Both of my children were born before their due date. And even if they’d been 10 month babies (like I was!), I don’t think I would have been prepared for the impact that either of them made on my world. Yes, children completely change everything, don’t they? I guess we could say they turn our worlds upside down and flip it around. Ha!

But nothing has changed the world as much as the birth of Jesus. He was born to a young, inexperienced mom and an awkward newbie dad who found themselves in a strange place feeling, I’m sure, quite ill-prepared for all that lay ahead. Can you even imagine? For all the times that life has taken us by surprise, let’s concede that God, in His mysterious ways, does indeed know what He’s doing. We can rest in Him when plans are upended or things go as planned. Ultimately He’s in control.

And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. ~ Luke 2:6

xoxo, Kay

  1. Very Very Classy Kay!!!! You look fabulous in both outfits. I am still ooohhing and awwwing over your hairstyle. I love it. Have a great weekend.
    ~❄️Lisa❄️~

  2. Love your new ‘do.’ I have been MIA for a bit. I lost my precious shih tzu, Charlie, about 2 weeks ago and have been out of sorts since then. It was very unexpected and devastating. He was my shadow for almost 14 years. Your new hairstyle is so flattering and I know you are enjoying it. Fair Isle sweaters are my fave. I need to head over to Talbots and check this one out. Have a great day exploring. Merry Christmas!

    1. I’m so sorry about Charlie. I know how hard that is. We lost Benji just about 9 months ago and I still think I’m going to see him every time I come home from anywhere. Bless your heart. 💙

    2. Oh Peggy…..just read your comment and I am so so sorry for your pet loss😢. Our Shi-Tzu is 14 and he’s our pride and joy💙. Praying comfort for you.

      Holly

      1. Thank you Holly. I always knew it would be difficult but it is much worse than I imagined. Give your fur baby a cuddle from me.

  3. I had to laugh about “the 17” waiting for your posts….I think there are WAY more of us than that!! Beautiful looks today. I got that same black and white Talbots sweater and just love the way it fits. It is one of my new favorites! The gold and black look is also very classy! Enjoy your day! I’m in NE Ohio and plan to make the most of the warmer temps today!

    1. Hahaha! Well thank you. Yes, I like the way the sweater fits, too. I wore it Wednesday with a skirt. You’ll see it tomorrow in my post. I’m enjoying this weather while we have it too. 😉

  4. I love these outfits! I usually gravitate toward the reds and greens but these neutrals have an understated elegance. I especially like the “tee” — I get too hot in all the sweaters.
And I’m still loving your hair. I have a ton of hair and a lot of coarse gray so I am struggling to find a style. You’ve inspired me to keep trying! XO

    1. Yes, aging throws a kink in things doesn’t it? About the time we figure out our hair it starts going grey. This tee is a super option for when you want something lighter than a tee. I was immediately drawn to it. Thanks for reading. 😊

  5. Hi Kay,
I don’t know how you get all of this work done in such a professional way! I don’t think anyone would care if occasionally a post goes AWOL or is posted the next day. We have all been there! Thanks for your witness and very kind demeanor on a regular basis.

    1. Thank you Betty. I’m definitely learning to loosen up a bit. I know I’m harder on myself than anyone else is. I also know that once I let up a little on something I tend to let up more and more, and that’s not a good thing in a business where consistency is one of the pillars of success. But I really do appreciate the grace. 🥰

  6. HI Kay,
I really like the look in the Holiday Gold and Brown. The top and vest go great together. Haircut is very cute too!

  7. You look wonderful in the outfits, Kay! It’s hard to choose which look I like the best; both are classy and festive. They are also practical as either outfit can be worn after the holidays.
Your new haircut is lovely. I like the layered look; it just frames and softens the face beautifully.
    Have a great weekend,
    Suzanne

    1. Thanks Suzanne. Yeah, I don’t know that I have a favorite either. And both would be perfect for New Years or even Valentines celebrations too. ❤️

    1. Thanks so much, Joan. I was actually freezing the day we took those photos. Ha! But it’s much warmer today so I’m looking forward to getting out. 🥰

  8. Such beautiful outfits on you, that complement your lovely hair too. Each and every piece could easily work its way into any modern classic lady’s daily wardrobe. I love them all. Relax and enjoy your time today exploring with your husband. I look forward to your posts and videos, yet realize that unforeseen circumstances happen. Hugs to you for your style and grace throughout all of life’s curveballs.

  9. I kept checking for your post yesterday, so you were definitely missed! I really like both outfits that you put together. There is something to say about wearing all neutrals, so elegant while still being very festive. Have a fabulous touring day!

  10. I did check several times yesterday, saying where is Kay? I was wondering if you were sick and so glad you weren’t.
Do not be so hard on yourself, though I do enjoy the posts.
My favorite color is red and I dress in red a lot during the holidays or December month. Looks so festive. I love the snowflake sweater and wish it came in a different color, like red or even white. I cannot wear the color you had on in under the puffer vest, though you looked adorable in it. I loved the pop of red with your red crossbody bag.
I just love, love your new hairstyle! Looks so cute on you. Sherry

  11. I love so many things in both of these outfits! Neutrals for holidays are so classy and versatile. I bought a silver cowl neck sweater from Talbots a couple of years ago and it’s been a fabulous workhorse for holidays – it looks great with dressy black pants but it looks just as good with jeans. By the way your hair looks awesome – so cute!

  12. Kay,
Thank you for this post. You absolutely have a gift for putting outfits together in a way that is elegant and classy. Thank you for what you do. That black Fair Isle sweater needs to join my closet! Thanks again for all you do!

  13. You look great in both outfits, and I love your new hairstyle! I also have that black Fair Isle sweater and plan to wear it tonight for the first time. I think I’ll add my red Everlane loafers for a pop of color. Thanks for all you do for us!

  14. I really like both of the looks, Kay; I especially like the FairIsle sweater and gold vest. I used to try to wear a lot of green and red over Christmas but in the last several years I have worn more gold, silver, and white.
Your new hairstyle is my hairstyle! Sometimes I let it grow out 3 or 4 inches, but I always come back to this length, and my husband likes it best this length.
However, I finished chemo 4 weeks ago and my hair thinned a lot, but I could wear a hat when I was out, and people didn’t realize, because my hair is very thick. The past week, at this late stage when I am waiting for my hair to come back in, it has decided to finish falling out. I admit I spent yesterday in tears, but my husband gave me pep talks and I am trying not to complain or let it steal my joy. Sorry, but I hope writing this will help me move on and be grateful for all that I do have. God is so good! Thank you for all of your devotionals, Kay.

    1. Oh my. I’m so sorry Patt. I’m praying the chemo was effective and you’ll be having a full recovery. And may you be blessed with healthy beautiful hair, too. Take courage. This shall pass. Blessings to you. 💕💕💕

  15. Love your new haircut. Hard to imagine you could have appeared even prettier. Looks soft and uncontrived.

I missed blessed for my day. Either the content didn’t load or could you have omitted it?
When your post is sponsored and they review it do they limit what you can say?

    1. Oh my word! I didn’t know it didn’t post. Oops. No, this is on me. I wrote it last night but must have accidentally posted it on tomorrow’s post. 🤪 It’s up now. Thanks for letting me know.

  16. Great outfits, Kay! Your photos/styling are very nice. I especially thought the pink poinsettia was a beautiful addition. In general, I don’t purchase sweaters (TX), and I’ve never been a fan of the fair isle look, but that one is very tempting. I love an all-black outfit. And…I must comment on your lovely haircut! So flattering and bouncy looking. Thank you for all you do!

  17. My Mama use to say, “If you aren’t making mistakes, then you aren’t doing anything.”
I love the gold look so much. The shoes are to die for and I probably will if I order another thing for Christmas and my husband checks the bank statement. LOL
I never thought to wear a gold metallic vest for Christmas. Love this idea with the pops of red. Both looks are great.

  18. I’ve been following you for a while and am doing one of your Bible studies….which is fabulous!! Thank you for being “real”! You look great in this outfit. I love your style.

      1. I did the front porch study this summer and now I’m on the Satisfied at Last study. Only a couple more, so keep writing! LOL

  19. Love both outfits and your new hairstyle is so pretty!!

I also really appreciate your words reminding us that God’s in control.

    Blessings to you,

    Beth

  20. I always look forward to and read your posts but rarely comment. Just had to say I love both your outfits today. The tee and vest combo is perfect for our Georgia weather!

    1. Thanks so much for sharing, Nancy. Good to hear from you today. Yes, I started accumulating these puffer vests when I lived in Arizona because they’re the perfect outerwear outfit completer for a cool but not cold climate. 😉
