We’re smack dab in the middle of summer, and I know many of you are in a heat wave. Here in southern Arizona we’re anxiously awaiting our cooling monsoon rains, but we’re pretty hot for now. So I’m wearing shorts most every day. Because many of my readers are my age (50s) and older, I’m aware that some of you have sworn off shorts. But I think that’s because you don’t want to wear short shorts. I get that. So today I’m showing you how I style Bermuda shorts.
James took these photos when we were at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens last week…in 100 degrees! So I look a little wilted. We had actually taken shots of this outfit on an earlier day when I had on more makeup and less sweat. But I’m letting go of my vanity so you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of these historic gardens. Yes, the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens are old, but they’re historic because they’re the site of mine and James’ first date. Ha! That was a little over 31 years ago.
My white shorts have a 13″ inseam, making them true Bermuda shorts because they hit right at my knee. These are made of a wonderful rayon, nylon and spandex blend that makes them extremely comfortable, but with a dressy look. Also, these shorts have a smooth, hidden elastic waist band, so you simply pull them up. They keep their shape and skim the body nicely, never stretching out to sag or bag. That’s important when choosing Bermudas. You want your longer shorts to stay close to the body so they don’t balloon out and look huge.
Also, it’s true that Bermuda shorts probably look best on women with long legs, but these particular shorts do come in petite sizes as well. And there’s also a similar short with an 11″ inseam if you prefer a short that ends just above your knee rather than mid-knee.
You can wear Bermuda shorts with a close fitting summer sweater, a blouse that is tied at the waist or a sleeveless, tailored button up shirt, too. But I chose to pair mine with a v-neck slub t-shirt for a more casual look. Yes, the shirt is a little blousy, but it has a feminine cut and an arched hemline that create a more appealing visual than a regular t-shirt would. And I love the contrast of the white with the periwinkle blue.
As I write this post, I’m actually wearing these same shorts with my red tank and aqua kimono, worn with my white jeans in this post. (By the way, I discovered that none of the affiliate links to Soft Surroundings are working, so I apologize if you tried to get through them earlier. This link should work. And the Azura Topper is still on sale!)
Again, I’m loving these gold sandals. And I wear them with most everything lately. I keep thinking I’ll wear other shoes, but alas…
Honestly, I feel a little sweaty just looking at these photos! I was so hot that day. But I just couldn’t resist being able to share pictures with some green in the background instead of my usual Arizona brown. Also, the shorts appear pretty wrinkled in these photos, but we had been riding in the car for quite a while when we hopped out and took these photos. So keep that in mind. They really are rather dressy, but comfortable Bermuda shorts.

Blessed for My Day
Today may you be blessed with the gift of friendship. And of course we all know friendship is a two-way street. So rather than wait for the blessing of friendship to fall upon you, why not be the blessing of friendship to another. Maybe you could reach out to a friend you haven’t connected with in a while. Or maybe you could reach outside of your usual circle of friends and befriend someone who is new to your church, neighborhood or workplace. Then again, maybe you just need to call up your bestie and make plans to spend time together. How can you extend the blessing of friendship to someone today?
A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity. ~ Proverbs 17:17
Love this look. You look great, I’d never know it was such a hot day! I live in shorts in the summer here in Florida, too and am always on the lookout for not too boxy or not too tight Bermudas.
Thanks for reading, Sue. Yes, wearing Bermudas really is all about the fit!
Great job styling the Bermuda shorts!
It’s nice to find shorts that fit so well and look so good, Kay!!
And how wonderful to take us to the gardens with you!! What a trooper to go in that heat!!
XOXO

I don’t do short shorts, so I appreciate this suggestion. Since I’m shorter than you, I tend to do wedge sandals with Bermuda shorts to add height (but those gold sandals are fabulous and need to go on my wishlist…).
