Using L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Cosmetics for Women Over 50

February 2, 2021

Yesterday I shared the L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect cosmetics that I recently purchased through Walgreens‘ curbside pickup online shopping feature. In that post I focused on the skin care products and foundations I used. So if you’re just dropping in, you might want to begin there or at least check out that post next. But today I’m excited to share with you the “look” I created with those products plus the blush, lip color and eye products I used from L’Oreal Paris. Let’s get started!

At the conclusion of yesterday’s post, I had applied the L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Cell Renewal* Rosy Tone Moisturizer, the Rosy Tone Anti-Aging Eye Brightener, the Blurring Face Primer Infused with Caring Serum, the Radiant Concealer with Hydrating Serum and the Radiant Serum Foundation with SPF 50  in #25 Cream Beige. Then I used the original BeautyBlender to set and blend my foundation.

But in today’s post you’ll notice I don’t have those products on yet. I do my eye makeup first.

That leads nicely into what I want to do here today. While I’m not an expert in this area of beauty, I have learned a few tips from makeup pros that I’d like to pass on to you. So I’ll be doing that as I continue to review the L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect products, too.

L'Oreal Paris Makeup

Remember, these are drugstore brand beauty products. So when I offer my review, I’m assuming that you know that you generally give up a little something-something when you purchase lower-priced products, but not always. In fact, did you realize that L’Oreal also owns Lancome, Yves Saint Laurent, Kiehl’s, Urban Decay and IT Cosmetics, to name just a few of their other holdings? So you’re not paying less for drugstore brands because they’re made with less know-how. But formulations are based on final prices. So you’ll often notice that the lower priced cosmetics go on a little less smoothly, have less staying power and perhaps have less refined scents.

So as I review these L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect products, I’m trying to let you know how they feel, wear and smell. That way you’ll know how they stack up to the pricier counterparts.

L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Eye Makeup

Well, they don’t actually have an eyeshadow palette that is specifically Age Perfect. Instead, I used the L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche La Palette Nude Eye Shadow. I appreciate that this palette contains ten shades from a soft cream to amber to taupe to deep chocolate browns. Most of them do contain a little shimmer, but only a few really glitter. And while I prefer all matte shadows I’m experimenting with adding just a touch of shimmer on the lid right above my iris.

Eye Shadow Palette 1

The shadows go on very velvety smooth and have a good bit of pigment, so you don’t have to apply much at a time. However, when you go in to blend, you do lose a good bit of that pigment quickly. So I sometimes had to reapply product to get the intensity I desired.

It’s hard to take photos that really show how I applied my eye color. But the good news is that the Colour Riche La Palette has detailed diagrams on the back of it that show you how to do four different eye shadow looks from soft and natural to dramatic.

The individual shadows don’t appear to be named, so I’ll just refer to them by the number position they hold in the palette.

Eyeshadow 1

First, I applied the #1 shadow (see photo above) to my entire eye lid using my It Cosmetics Heavenly Luxe Dual Eyeshadow All-Over brush #5. I believe the Love Beauty Fully All-Over Shadow Brush #216 is the same thing, just without the smudge brush I have at the other end of mine. Either would work well. You want to use a good all-over brush that will pick up plenty of powder and then deposit it smoothly on your lid. Not all of my brushes are by It Cosmetics, but I have had good luck with them and highly recommend them.

Second, I used my Estee Lauder Contour Shadow Brush #30 to apply the creamy brown #4 shadow. It has a bit of sparkle, so I only applied this shadow to my lid from the lash line to the crease.

Eyeshadow 2

Here you want to use a contoured brush like mine that is slightly tapered but still picks up and deposits product well. The L’Oreal eyeshadow goes on very soft, so it’s easy to apply without it flaking or dusting all over your face.

Eyeshadow 2 Application

This is where things will start looking strange. But hang with me!

Third, I applied the L’Oreal eyeshadow #5, which is matte golden medium brown. I used my Elf Eye Crease Brush to pick up just a little of the powder and then tapped the extra off before applying.

Eyeshadow #3

I used the small Eye Crease Brush to apply the #5 shadow from the crease toward the brow bone in a sort of boomerang shape, going to just under the bone and not all the way to the brow. You can’t really see it here, but I also swooped the shadow down toward the outer corner of my eye. At this point I wasn’t concerned about blending.

Eyeshadow #3

You’ll notice that when I was applying my eyeshadow, I actually didn’t have my foundation on yet. I’ve gotten to where I prefer to apply my moisturizer and then go ahead and do my eye makeup. That way I can come along and clean up any residue before applying my foundation. And it makes it easier to extend my eye shadow out and then neaten it up when applying foundation.

DSC_5889

At this point I didn’t feel like I had enough intensity in the crease of my eye for my taste, so I used the same Eye Crease Brush to apply shadow #6 in the Colour Riche La Palette. It’s the darkest brown and it’s a soft matte shadow.

Eyeshadow #4

I applied it in that same boomerang shape, this time creating a bit more of an upward sweeping motion at the outer corners for a little lift. You don’t ever want to pull this darker color down at the corners of your eyes. You want there to be some lift, like I’m showing above. Remember, I’m still going to blend this in.

After I got the amount of product on that I wanted, I used a blending crease brush in soft, circular motions to gently blend in the darker shadow, being careful not to extend it over the rest of my eye. I don’t just rub it in. As I’m blending, I’m shaping the shadow. I want the color to extend up and out toward the end tips of my brows (which aren’t even there yet, ha!).

Blending 1

I don’t think I quite have a photo of the finished product, but you’ll see it in the next closeup. Do I recommend the L’Oreal Pairs Colour Riche La Palette ? Yes, I like it.

L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Lash Magnifying Mascara

At this point, once I had my shadow somewhat how I want it, I applied the L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Lash Magnifying Mascara in black. It’s also available in brown.

Mascara

I appreciate that the Lash Magnifying Mascara is also a serum formula with conditioners that leave your lashes feeling soft rather than brittle and crumby. I HATE crumby mascara. I apply three coats of mascara to my upper lashes and one scant coat to my lower lashes, but I don’t dip my wand into the tube but the once. That way you get less air into the tube and the product lasts much longer. And really, if you work the wand into the lashes sufficiently, you can get plenty of product on your lashes with just the one dip.

I also like that the applicator is a nice basic, soft bristle wand. I’m not much for fancy wands. They take too much practice to learn how to use them. I really like that this one is basic and gets the job done without a lot of bells and whistles.

By the way, the Lash Magnifying Mascara stays on my lashes all day without crumbling off. And it comes off nicely with makeup remover and a gentle cleanser. Do I recommend it? Absolutely!

Q-Tip

I’m assuming that many of my readers are like me and can’t see very well as they’re applying their makeup. Even with a magnifying mirror, I can’t see perfectly what I’m doing. And even if I can see, I tend to smudge a little mascara here and there as I’m applying it. I’ve learned that if you let that dry and then use a clean, dry cotton swab you can easily dab away any mistakes without smudging and further messing things up. I always do this step before I apply my eyebrows.

L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Brow Magnifying Pencil

Did I say apply my eyebrows? LOL! Yes, I did! Y’all. I hardly have any eyebrows at all. I’ve never had any to speak of. So I definitely have to apply them! I prefer a powder eyebrow liner these days, but I was game to try the L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Brow Magnifying Pencil. They have four shades to choose from; I went with blonde.

Eyebrow Pencil

I will say that at the rate that I have to apply eyebrow pencil, this pencil will be gone in no time. It is a very soft pencil. So that’s nice. It doesn’t tug at my few brows or scratch. It feels nice and applies smoothly. But it also uses up the crayon fast. It sharpens easily with a makeup pencil sharpener. But I’ve already sharpened mine twice in less than a week, so it’s going to be gone soon.

eyebrow line

Shaping and filling in your brows can make such a difference in your appearance. They frame the eyes. But they also can lift your face and brighten your appearance. Make sure you extend your eyebrows out so that they dissect at the angle created when you hold a pencil from the base of your nose, past the corner of your eye and out toward your hairline. Any further and they’ll cause your face to droop. Any higher up and you’ll look unfinished.

Also, if you create an angle with your brows, make sure the peak is out past the middle of your brows. If you peak at the center of your brows you’ll look perpetually “surprised.”

Do I recommend the eye brow pencil? Yeah, if you like a pencil and understand that it will not last long.

L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Anti-Feathering Lip Liner

Lip Liner

I used the L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Anti-Feathering Lip Liner in nude pink. The pencil applies very soft and feels moist. But the nude pink is also very light. Maybe that’s a good thing though. I certainly don’t want to have a noticeable line around my lips. The purpose of a lip pencil is simply to do what this one claims: prevent feathering of your lipstick. Do I recommend it? Yes!

By the way, a reader asked if I had any trouble sharpening it. I didn’t. But I used a really good makeup pencil sharpener that I received with a Dior product. So I think you do need a good makeup quality sharpener.

Application Tip: Apply your top lip liner from the bottom up. That will help you to draw a fuller lip. It may seem counterintuitive, but start from the corner of your mouth and go up toward the peak of your lip and then down into bow.

L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Lipsticks

Lipstick

The L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect collection has two different lipsticks to choose from. I purchased some of both. I like the moisturizing feeling of the Luminous Hydrating Lipstick + Nourishing Serum (I got the Sublime Red and wore it yesterday). But here I applied the L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Satin Lipstick with Precious Oils in soft mauve (which doesn’t really look like mauve to me, more like a deep, dusty rose).

Blot

I always apply lipstick fully to my lips and then blot with a clean tissue. I’m especially careful to blot my inner lips, so that I don’t wind up with lipstick on my teeth. Then I apply a second coat just to the middle to outer edges of my lips.

DSC_6007

I think both the L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Satin Lipstick with Precious Oils, shown above in soft mauve, and the Luminous Hydrating Lipstick + Nourishing Serum apply beautifully and smoothly. And they feel great on your lips for a long time. Do I recommend them? Heartily! I’ll be wearing these a lot!

L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Radiant Satin Blush

Finally, I completed my look with the L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Radiant Satin Blush with Camellia Oil in Rosewood. This very soft blush is nicely pigmented and loads well on a soft brush without getting excessively powdery. It doesn’t apply dark…unless you want it to. And it blends in nicely without leaving streaks or residue.

Application tip: Keep your blush just on your cheek bones and only from just outside of the iris of your eye to your hairline. You don’t want to bring cheek color too far down on your face or too close to your nose because it will create a sagging look. You can use cheek color to lift your face if you apply it toward the outer portion of your cheeks only and don’t bring it down into your face too much.

Blush

Do I recommend the L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Radiant Satin Blush with Camellia Oil? Yes. I’ll be using this!

So there you have it! Thanks for sticking with me. I generally reserve my beauty posts for February for some reason. But I’m thinking about doing shorter ones more frequently, maybe trying different products occasionally. What do you think? Is that something you would like here at Dressed for My Day?

Finished Look

Thanks so much for dropping in today. Let me know if you have questions about anything I’ve shared. Again, I’m linking predominantly to Walmart for the L’Oreal products, but I’m providing links to additional sources below.

You can shop the look through the links in the copy above or through the shopping widget below. Sale prices are not always reflected in the widget, so click through to get pricing info. Remember, if you purchase anything through these links I potentially earn a commission, but at no cost to you. Thank you for shopping through Dressed for My Day. I am grateful!

But you can also shop the products at these retailers:

Shopping Tip: While you may be able to get these products at your local store, I do suggest shopping online and using the curbside pickup option that all of these stores offer right now. To me it is so much easier to shop online for beauty products rather than squatting down in a store aisle with a mask on and bumping into other shoppers. I ordered my products through Walgreens and my order was ready in less than 30 minutes.

Blessed for My Day

Yesterday I uploaded the new video for the Dressed for My Day February 2021 Challenge. I’d love for you to take the challenge. The theme is Love is in the Air. You can learn more about it here. But part of the challenge, for the inner beauty component, is to “learn to love more deeply.”

Are you challenged to love well in a difficult relationship? That can be a tough situation, huh. Sometimes the people we are the closest to are actually the hardest to love. But we know that we are called to love them well. And of course, that may look different in various situations, depending on what that person really needs. But today I would like to challenge all of us to take up the biblical challenge to love well, even when it isn’t easy at all.

If I speak with the tongues of mankind and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. And if I give away all my possessions to charity, and if I surrender my body so that I may glory, but do not have love, it does me no good. ~ 1 Corinthians 13:1-3

xoxo, Kay

  1. Would have liked to have read your post as I did subscribe but the popups make it impossible. In fact as I’m typing right now there is a popup covering my typed words. I’m starting to explore fashion posts and like the fact that you also have a scriptural message at the end. I do not have this problem on other cites. When the popup appears I click stop seeing and ad covers content but they just keep popping up to a point when all I can so is close your post and move on.

    1. I’m so sorry about this Elizabeth. A handful of other readers have experienced the same problem recently on my blog and I have reported it to my ad company. This is not typical for my site, so please don’t let it scare you off. They are working on really the issue as it turns out their other websites are having the same problem. It appears it happens in rare instances and that’s why they didn’t pick up on it earlier. But they’ve assured me they are working to resolve the issue.

  2. Where did you get your headband? I have seen ones with the huge bow on top, which I don’t care for. But I love the simplicity of yours.

  3. These products look lovely on you! I just wish L’Oréal was cruelty free. I know that isn’t important to everyone but I’m trying to make that a choice. Love your blog…always uplifting! Your comments about heaven yesterday were spot on! 💜

    1. Hi Liz. When I looked into this issue, this is what I found on L’Oreal’s website:

“In 1989, L’Oréal completely ceased testing its products on animals, 14 years before it was required by regulation. Today, L’Oréal no longer tests its ingredients on animals. L’Oréal no longer tolerates any exception to this rule.”

Only on third party websites do I find claims that L’Oreal tests on animals. Whereas I find statement after statement on their official website that they do not do so. 🙂

      1. Thanks, Kay! It’s all so confusing. Some “animal advocate” websites say that as long as companies sell in China they do some testing even though it doesn’t take place in the US. I appreciate you doing that research and sharing what you found. Have a wonderful day!

  4. I enjoyed today’s (and yesterday’s) posts – you are beautiful with or without makeup). Yes to ongoing beauty posts – I enjoyed the tips. Perhaps as you demonstrate each eye shadow colour, you could close your eyelids and show the how the application looks as I kind of get lost on the whole “swoop” thing (Can you tell I haven’t worn makeup in a long time)?

    1. Thanks for reading, Shelley. We just don’t have as much experience shooting these posts as we do the fashion posts. I’m sure we’ll improve over time. But it will all probably have to wait until we move anyhow. 🥰

    2. Unfortunately I was busy yesterday so just read Tuesday’s post this morning. I have enjoyed Monday and Tuesday’s post. I know that you don’t use eye liner anymore so I am wondering if you are using eye shadow on the outer corner of your lower lid? You didn’t mention what you did. It is smudged nicely so looking for ideas. Thanks. I also wanted you to know that I am getting pop up ads too.

  5. You mentioned that you normally use a powder rather than a pencil to your eyebrows – can you share which one?

  6. I’ll be making a beauty run today- Walmart, Walgreens, Target, etc until I come home with all of this. I’ll need a lot of practice to get your eye makeup look. It’s really pretty.
No pop ups at all. Have a great day Kay🧡💛

  7. Hi Kay, I really enjoyed this post as it is nice to have a makeup refresher. FYI, I had no popups while reading this post. Thanks for all that you do!

  8. Thank you for the wonderful application tips! I would love to see an additional post on foundation, concealer and moisturizer. Thank you too for highlighting an affordable drugstore brand…. it’s where I am in life. Bless you!

  9. Hi Kay! I really enjoyed this post, even though I don’t wear makeup. Years ago the ophthalmologist told me to not wear any eye makeup because my eyes are so sensitive. I have waisted a lot of money searching for an eye makeup remover that does not irritate them. And the lenses in my eye glasses are transition, so unless I really make up my eyes, I don’t know that applying eye makeup would be beneficial. Since I have to wear a mask outside of our home, my face stays pretty well covered from others, so I just apply my good moisturizer every morning. Like you, I have no eyebrows, so I should at least give myself some, as long as I practice on making them look natural.
Regarding the love challenge for February, to be honest, my biggest challenge is loving myself. I am having a very difficult time loving me at the largest size I have been since my 2010 surgery for Cushing’s Disease. I don’t like the excess skin/fat, and I don’t like looking in the mirror in my birthday suit. I continue to ask God to help me love myself, just as I am, just like He does.
Also, I have just referenced your post on selecting our signature colors since I could not find where I had written them down before. I am ready to thin out my closet of all pieces of clothing that are not one of my signature or neutral colors. While I am doing a pretty good job of wearing everything, I am over having a crowded closet and wearing colors that aren’t what I look best in.
I hope that you have an awesome day!

  10. I just watched a YouTube video last night about applying makeup like you did in this post. I also went to Ulta and ordered the foundation and I’m excited to try it. I usually go to Ulta when I me advice about colors. I appreciate you so much! I have a question for you….I’m thinking about purchasing a microderm abrasion kit and I don’t want to spend a lot of money. I also have very dry skin.
    Do you have any recommendations?

  11. Thank you so much for including the eyebrow powder you use. I am blessed with full brows but they have turned grey! I get them dyed a couple of times a year, but between times need to cover the greys. Brow sticks can’t do that job. I was using shadows but I’m going to try your urban decay set to solve this problem. The makeup instructions and reviews are wonderful…

  12. First, I want to comment on the pop-up ad thing. Browsers can be set to block pop-ups. I use Firefox as my browser and Privacy Badger which blocks tracking and unsafe sites. I don’t have any ad issues on iPhone, laptop or iPad. (Network engineer husband)
Do these lipsticks have a scent, Kay? Also, what is your skin type? “Serum” in the products may be too much for my combo skin.
Thank you for testing these products.

    1. Hi Terry. No, there are some readers who are experiencing legitimate problems with my ads. I don’t think it has anything to do with their settings. My ad company has confirmed there is a problem, but they’re working to resolve it. I have normal to dry skin. And the satin lipstick doesn’t seem to have any scent to me. But the luminous hydrating one does. 😊

  13. You look beautiful Kay! The L’Oreal products enhance your natural features.
I especially LOVE the Sublime Red on you!! – it’s a soft subtle red.
Thank you for posting & being such an inspiration for us LADIES over 50.
    much love & blessings –
    Luz M. Gomez (almost 54)

  14. I always enjoy your posts; however, I continue to get ads that cover the content. This makes it very difficult to read the information. I’m sure you put a lot of effort into your posts.

  15. Hi Kay. You look radiant & beautiful w/I looking like you have alot of makeup on! Thanks for these tips and for shopping local!

  16. Hello Kay , just found your site on you tube and went to your blog, I use the Avon Blonde eye pencil it is a long lasting pencil that can be sharpened, I really like it. Also Wayne Goss has a you tube video about making your foundation last longer with better coverage by applying a loose powder over moisturizer or primer before foundation, it really works Thank You and stay well Peggy

  17. Thanks so much for this post, Kay!! I’ve been thinking of trying this line of products and am delighted to hear your take on them! Also loved your new video 5 Ways to look Put Together!! BTW, could you share again the line of hair products you like from Target? Thanks so much!!

  18. I have enjoyed the two posts on L’Oreal products. I’m not wearing much makeup during quarantine (self-imposed until I get my vaccine). When I do go out, I concentrate on the eyes as that is all people can see. I’ve been looking for a good under eye concealer so I will give this a try. I also have very pale eyebrows, so I have to fill them in. Do you do this entire routine when you travel? I’d love to see a post on what you pack for a trip. I can’t imagine taking so many products and brushes for even a weekend away. We traveled often prior to Covid—often for 6 weeks at a time, and I hope we can do that again when things open up.

  19. Thank you for reviewing the Age Perfect line. I will definitely give it a try.

I noticed that you didn’t put on a eyeshadow primer – I’m assuming that L’Oreal doesn’t have one. I need to use a primer even if I don’t wear eyeshadow because my eyes ‘sweat’ and get shiny.

I love your hair cut and wonder if it takes much work? Could you share how you do your hair start to finish?

Thanks for your posts! Love them!

    1. Hi Vicky. They didn’t have an eyeshadow primer but they do have an eye cream, which I used in the previous post. And I like it very much. I use an eyeshadow primer by Mary Kay that I like a lot.
