How I Really Dressed for My Day 04/03/21 – 04/08/21

Happy Friday! It’s time for me to post my daily outfits for the past week. I have to confess, as I reviewed these photos I decided that I desperately need to infuse more color into my outfits. But then I also think the clothing I choose to wear often reflects my disposition, and that would certainly be true of this week’s outfits. I’ve had the blahs this week. Not quite the blues, but the blahs. Make sense? So I love the clothes I wore, but I’m encouraging myself to make some brighter choices this next week.

Dressed for My Day 04 03 21 04 08 21

Sizing Information

Just for reference, I’m 5’8″ and weigh about 155. I generally wear a size 8 or medium in dresses, tops, jackets and pants (or 29 or 30 in jeans), so that’s what I’m wearing in these looks unless I tell you otherwise. That way you can assume everything I show you is true to size unless I alert you to sizing up or down. I wear a size 9.5 shoe and, again, I’ll just let you know if I sized up or down in a shoe, otherwise it’s true to size.

How This Works

I want to focus more on styling tips and less on the products. So please assume everything I’m wearing is true to size and fits and feels great unless I tell you otherwise. After all, these are the things I’m choosing to wear in real life.

I’m providing shopping widgets after each outfit, and a lot of what I’m showing you is still available. I’m also trying to include more economical options where that’s appropriate. But if I forget to do that, just ask.

Since I posted last week’s How I Really Dressed for My Day post on Saturday, this week’s outfits begin on Saturday instead of Friday.

How I Really Dressed for Saturday at Home

I don’t think I ever managed to get out for more than a good long walk last Saturday. So I wore these lightweight L.L.Bean camp pants and a 3/4 length sleeve tee for a day around the house. Well, at least I do have on some color here!

How I Really Dressed Saturday

I really like these lightweight L.L.Bean camp pants. They’re made from an abrasion-resistant nylon and spandex for just-right stretch, and they also offer 50+ UPF protection. So they’re a great pant for outdoor activities, but also comfortable enough for indoors or even travel.

Uh oh. The following photo reveals that my mirror needs to be cleaned. But I wanted you to get a close up look at these pants, so bear with me.

I kept this Saturday outfit simple with my white sneakers and minimal jewelry. I just wore my silver compass coin necklace and silver hoop earrings.

How I Really Dressed for Easter

Well, I really did get to wear my pretty blue and white dolman sleeve shirt dress for Easter. The weather was absolutely perfect for it. And while I carried my blue cardigan along just in case (since I was serving brownies outdoors between services), I don’t think I ever needed to put it on. I felt pretty and appropriately festive for the day.

Because I never managed to get that pedicure on Saturday, I wore my classic nude pumps. And I actually like the way that looked anyhow. One thing is for sure. My legs never look better than when I’m wearing these classic pumps. Ha!

I don’t think I’ve said enough about these Ally Bossy Beige leather pumps. Ally reached out and sent them to me a couple of months ago so I could share them with you. I was a little hesitant because of the price. But I have to tell you, I wore these heels from 9 a.m. until almost 4 p.m. and was on my feet much of that time. And I could have walked another mile in them easily. They are THE most comfortable pump I’ve ever worn…and so classic in appearance.

Ally Shoes also carries other heels and flats, too. You can use coupon code KAYHEELS to get $40 off your first pair of heels or KAYFLATS to receive 10% off your first order of flats.

We had church in the morning and then went out for brunch with another family. It was a lovely day. And my cotton dolman sleeve shirt dress was perfect for the day. I also wore my Veronica hoop earrings and my baroque pearl necklace, stretch bracelet and ring. I carried my chalk white Cassie bag and my blue cardigan.

How I Really Dressed Monday

Admittedly I spent half of Monday in my workout clothes. So I snapped a photo! Plus, I have to tell you. I love my Athleta workout clothes. They’re definitely a little pricey, but they hold up to wear and they move with you so well. There’s never any binding or slipping or gaping… Anyhow I just wanted to share. I wear these or other similar workout clothes from Athleta almost every morning.

Athleta actually does have 100s of styles marked down right now. So if you’re interested in trying them out (be warned! you’ll never go back!), you can find the markdowns here.

Then I did get dressed in my black barrel pants, just like the walnut colored ones I shared in Monday’s post. One of the things I love about these lightweight full leg but tapered pants is that they have a high waist. So a cropped tee works perfectly with them.

How I Really Dressed Monday 2 a

I know this kind of earthy look is not everyone’s cup of tea, but I love the vibes going on in this outfit. I like the retro look of the baby blue raglan sleeve t-shirt, the edgy modern silhouette of the black barrel pants and the earthy feel of these Teva sandals.

I tried giving the raglan sleeve t-shirt a little front tuck, as you can see in the photo below.

How I Really Dressed Monday 2 tucked

But then I decided that with the high waist of the pants and the cropped tee, it just wasn’t necessary. The front tuck has two purposes, basically. One is to add interest. But the main purpose really is to create the right proportions. Here that just wasn’t necessary because the shirt is cropped and ends right where I need it to for those perfect proportions. And because the shirt is short, it just looked a little awkward tucked in.

How I Really Dressed Monday 2 b

I took the photo above so you could see the platform height of these Teva multi blue and green sandals. They are extremely comfortable. I took several walks around the block in them that day. And I also wanted you to see the barrel shape of these pants a little better. Cool, huh?

How I Really Dressed Monday 2 c

The barrel pants are sold out in the walnut, going fast in this black, but still pretty well stocked in the bay leaf green. I sized up to a 10 in them.

I liked the way my Kendra Scott customized Alex pendant necklace looked with this black and blue and green ensemble. My stone is the bronze veined teal magnesite, by the way. My earrings are no longer available, but I’ll find some to include in the shopping widget. And my Nordgreen the Native watch is still available for 15% off with code KAYHRMS. It’s not in the shopping widget, by the way.

What I Wore Tuesday

Tuesdays are video editing days most weeks, and I pretty much sit at my desk all day. But I want to be dressed to walk out the door for quick walks throughout the day, too. That’s the only way I get exercise in on those jam packed days.

So Tuesday I wore my Nic+Zoe tech stretch pants and seam detail shirt with a white linen blend tank. I hadn’t worn these since last fall, and it was so fun to put them on again.

How I Really Dressed Tuesday 1

My tech stretch pants are in navy, and they no longer carry that color. But I love the new tarnish grey and they’re marked down 40%. I’m wearing a TTS medium. They no longer carry the light blue shirt either. But they have it in other colors, including black and the dark indigo in 3X only.

How I Really Dressed Tuesday 2

So yeah, Nordstrom does carry the tech stretch pieces from Nic+Zoe. But honestly it’s easier to me to shop on the Nic+Zoe website because they have a wider selection. This stuff is pricey. I purchased mine about a year ago when I thought I was going to be traveling to India during the summer. Well, you know how that went! But I’m still happy I have the Nic+Zoe tech stretch pieces because they’re so classic, well crafted and lightweight. They’re perfect for travel…or just dashing out the door for a walk!

How I Really Dressed Tuesday 3

If you’re interested in shopping the Nic+Zoe website for tech stretch, just look for it under the CLOTHING tab under “collections.” I find it to run true to size. I have mediums in everything. (I also have a jacket and another pair of pants in black.) Oh, and I just noticed they do still have my blue snap front shirt on their website and it’s marked down.

I wore my Gorjana compass coin necklace and Parker chain necklace.

My Outfit on Wednesday

Since I published my How to Wear White Jeans Like a Boss video on Wednesday, I felt inspired to wear my white jeans. Ha! I styled them with the column of white I talked about in the video, topping the column with a subtle white and sandbar striped linen shirt. (Looks like I should have steamed the shirt!)

How I Really Dressed Wednesday 1

I liked the way this outfit came together with my suede platform espadrilles. Unfortunately Talbots has sold out of this toasted sesame color. But I found some nice options that I’ve included in the shopping widget below.

How I Really Dressed Wednesday 2

I had purchased these Paradise Cove starfish earrings from Brighton with my Birthday discount, and I thought they seemed appropriate with this outfit. Starfish…linen…see the connection? Ha! Well, I guess that’s just how my mind works. Anyhow, aren’t they pretty? They have just a touch of seaside blue in them. The only other jewelry I wore was my demi multi strand necklace.

By the way, my tank is not available from Chico’s right now. But expect we’ll see it as we get closer to summer. Or at least I hope so. These linen blend tanks are perfect for layering or wearing alone.

Well, as I’m writing this up and looking at these photos again, I’m not as down on my color choices as I was at the beginning of the post. I definitely chose subtle colors, but I actually like the looks they created.

How I Really Dressed for Thursday

Hahaha! Maybe the reason I feel like I didn’t have much color in this week’s outfits is because right now I’m wearing oatmeal as I type up this post. Ha! But when I received this driftwood heather shaker stitch cardigan in the mail this morning, I just had to put it on. I love the chunky texture and the caramel color of this cotton/acrylic blend cardi. It’s from Talbots’ Haven Well Within lounge collection, and it was 40% off when I purchased it last weekend.

How I Dressed for Thursday 3

Anyhow I wore it over that same white tank (this is third time I wore it this week!) and my canyon khaki cropped cargo chinos. So, yep. No color here. But I do like this white and caramel combo. I find myself gravitating more and more to neutrals. Maybe they feel peaceful to me.

How I Dressed for Thursday 2

And there’s just something sort of rich about white and caramel. Maybe it reminds me of vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce??? Anyhow I didn’t even have this color in my wardrobe a year ago. But now I seem to have lots of it. It’s definitely become part of my color palette, and I’m enjoying it.

How I Dressed for Thursday

What color combos are you enjoying this spring? Pastels? Neutrals? Bold colors of the tropics? Jewel tones? Or the trending colors of milky sherbet? I’d love to hear from you today.

Well, would you know it? I ended up spilling some of my lunch on my pants, so I swapped into my cuffed jeans for the afternoon and evening. I thought it was only fair to share!

Thanks so much for dropping in today. I hope you have a great Friday!

Blessed for My Day

Do you ever get a little blue? Statistically the average person has about three “blue days” per month. I’ve lived enough years to know that generally my blue days come and then go. So I don’t worry that I’ve sunk into despair; I just assume the funk will lift as quickly and quietly as it settled upon me. I wait it out, but I also lean into the Lord and ask Him to encourage me and lift my countenance on those days. When we feel a little blue we can draw near to “the help of our countenance and our God” by reading His Word, remembering how He has carried us through difficult times, counting our blessings and recounting the amazing attributes of God.

But if your blue days last longer than a week, I encourage you to tell someone whom you can trust. Seek out the counsel of a wise friend or mentor. Share with your pastor or small group leader. Talk to your healthcare provider. Maybe even make an appointment with a Christian counselor. I’ve done all of those things in the past. There is no shame in seeking help. And God can work through those people to lift your countenance, too.

Why are you in despair, O my soul?
And why have you become disturbed within me?
Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God. ~ Psalm 42:11

xoxo, Kay

  1. Kay I really am enjoying your daily posts and especially like the inspiration posted at the end of each one. Thank you.

  2. What wonderfully comfortable and pulled-together looking outfits. Sweet Easter photo too. Enjoying your posts and videos, thank you.

  3. I love your take on clothes and your thoughts as you put the outfit together. The details are so interesting along with your philosophy.

    1. Thanks for letting me know Barbara. I’ve really been rethinking my personal style a bit lately. I feel an evolution coming. Stay tuned! Again, that could just be today. Haha!

  4. I loved your post! You have such an easy way of putting together great looks. Your writing touches my heart too! Have a great weekend Kay!!❤️

    1. Thank you so much Coleen. I was feeling a little lackluster about this post and my outfits, but you ladies are encouraging. I have ordered several things with more color, but meanwhile I’m trying to think what I want this spring and summer to look like for me. I think our style is always evolving.

  5. While I like all of your daily outfits from this past week, my two favorites are Monday afternoons outfit and yesterday mornings outfit. The caramel and white, along with the sandy and white color combo just look so nice and sophisticated. Because I am determined to keep only colors that compliment me in my closet, I enjoy wearing my signature colors the most. Oh, I appreciated reading that you were doing housework the other day. It seems so many people hire others to keep their homes clean, and I’m just one of those that prefer to clean our home myself. That is exactly what I am doing today. Let’s make it a good day!

    1. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, Ginger. It’s always good to hear from you. Full disclosure, I do plan to look for someone to come in and clean every other week once we move into our new home. I’ve never done that before. But I find I’m really struggling to do a good job of cleaning while working at the pace I am now. I’ve really enjoyed housekeeping in the past when it was more of my job. But now that I’m working a good 50 hours a week here and on my YouTube and social channels, it’s quite frustrating. 😜

  6. Kay, I love to read your “How I Really Dressed for My Day” posts. I checked out the Ally pumps the other day and was surprised to see that they had 3 inch heels. I had pretty much decided that 2 1/2 heels was my limit, but now think I may try them since you say they are so comfortable. I have bunions and wondered is the leather really soft? Have a great weekend!

    1. Hi Karen. I really don’t notice them being 3”. Ha! They do have soft leather that stretches a tad with wear. But be sure to follow their sizing guide.

  7. Kay, Thank you so much for your Blessing of the Day. So many times this isn’t talked about in the Baptist church. There is also depression that requires medication. I wish this wasn’t such a taboo topic in the church. Somehow people in the church seem to think that your not right with the Lord. This needs to be recognized in the church as the medical condition that it is!

    1. Oh absolutely. There are multiple potential causes for depression and they all need to be investigated for a correct diagnosis. I’m glad you enjoyed the blessing.

  8. Hi Kay, I think the cream and caramel scheme somehow looks really classy as we get older, and maybe is a colour palette that we can’t pull off so well when we are younger? ( yay! Another advantage of getting older, lol.) I am also drawn to it lately and have recently bought 3 jackets in cream ( all different types!) where I would normally buy colour. I hadn’t realised how much I suited neutrals!
I have been taking a morning head and shoulders selfie for a while ( much to my husband’s amusement!) to try and work out which colours suit me and the occasional full length selfie to work out whether a new outfit idea ( often from your posts or videos) work on me. I find it helps way more than looking in the mirror, or asking for my husband’s opinion, lol. I have found ot really helpful.
    Keep up the good work!

  9. I loved your Wednesday outfit with the white jeans and white and sandbar stripped shirt. So classy. Of course I really like your Sunday Easter outfit and picture of you with your husband. Adorable. I do like the sweater you bought and wore shaker stich cardigan and canyon colored pants. I would probably get the sky grey for myself and different colored pants, as black or jeans, so I had a little more color. Think it would match my coloring better.
Thanks so much for the BFMD. I had the blues this past week also. It has rained for 4 days in a row now and can get a little grey and bleak inside our minds too and with the past year and what is going on in the world. We need to depend on Jesus even more. Have a blessed weekend.

  10. Kay, I know you are showing us how to look modern, and not to just try to look young, but you really look young in all your photos! It’s your warmth and sweet personality that shine through! The color palette you choose, neutral or otherwise, is very flattering. I am trying to incorporate more neutrals into my own wardrobe. Thank you for all the good advice.

  11. Hi,
I like and enjoy your posts every day. By the way, I bought the last year version of the linen shirt in Navy blue a few months ago, but something about it did not work for me. It seemed like it made my shoulder look very stumpy and so I returned it.

  12. Thank you very much again for your posts. I needed to see what to wear with larger arms that have ‘flab” hanging. I hope I can find shirts for summer like you suggested. It gets pretty warm her in Texas

    1. Hi Linda. I know it does. I lived in Texas for about 20 years. And remember, I think we’re much more conscious of our arms than other people are. So I don’t think we need to not wear things if we want to. 😉

  13. Thanks for your always inspirational posts, Kay! I enjoyed seeing all of your neutrals… I really enjoy those myself! I appreciate your honesty and sincerity in your posts, too!🙂

  14. Well it looks like you and Beth Djalali loved the same dress for Easter. The different accessories were lovely on both of you. You both have such classic styles.
By the way, I love the way Beth puts white jeans together in winter outfits. I haven’t tried it out though.

  15. these are my favorite posts!!!
over the winter, I tried the whole “neutrals” palette wardrobe…creams, blush, khaki, black, etc… it was okay… however, Spring came! and we have some serious things going on in our family dynamic as we are caring for my father in law in hospice with a brain tumor… I started craving COLORFUL clothes again… pinks, navy, yellows, greens, etc… I also noticed on the days I wear those colors I get compliments and my husband comments on my clothing also…so, I’ve taken the “neutrals” pallet and retired it for a bit… I enjoyed trying something more current like that, but I decided that once a “spring”, always a “spring” (on that note, my mom did my “colors” for me when I was in college!)… I had pretty much always shopped by that until this past year!!
    thanks for sharing this post!!

    1. Hi Leanne. Yes, I’m craving color these days too. I’m so glad you enjoyed the post. Isn’t it interesting how our souls direct even our fashion choices? 🥰
