Colorful A-Line Skirt 3 Ways

Hello and welcome to Dressed for My Day. This past weekend I culled my closet simply to make it more manageable, storing away items I’m choosing not to wear for summer but I’m not ready to part with yet. I noticed that I’m going instinctively with a more neutral color palette, but I do have a few splashes of color in my summer wardrobe. And one of the most darling is this colorful A-line skirt that I bought at Talbots earlier in the spring. Today I’m styling it 3 ways.

colorful A-Line Skirt

We actually shot these photos probably three weeks ago, and I completely forgot I had them in the can. And that’s a bummer because meanwhile Talbots has almost sold out of this darling patchwork A-line skirt. However, they do have a similar A-line patchwork skirt in striped preppy pastels. And both seem to be pretty well stocked in petites. I’m wearing my TTS 8 in misses.

Be warned, however. If you fall in love with this skirt of mine or decide you need to check out the preppy pastel alternative, do it quick. Talbots is having a great Summer Style Event with 30% off your entire purchase. PLUS Classic Awards Members (sign up for free if you’re not a member) can also get 40% off one item with code CLASSIC. So these darling skirts are going to go fast.

Look #1

A-Line Patchwork Skirt

I’m styling my patchwork skirt three ways today, and you could easily style the preppy pastel skirt or any other colorful A-line skirt the same ways for summer. In fact, you could also style the Talbots patchwork relaxed chino shorts the same ways. These shorts are made in the same fun fabric as my skirt. Really, I was excited about styling this skirt for you because I want us all to know how to wear these bold blends of summer color if we want to…regardless of our ages.

For my first look I paired the colorful A-line skirt with a watermelon pink cotton t-shirt and my denim jacket. Granted, this is a pretty colorful look. But I think the denim jacket keeps it anchored. And because I couldn’t resist adding just a splash more of color, I added my Kendra Scott customized Alex pendant. I have the bronze veined teal magnesite, but there are so many colorful stones to choose from.

I think one of the keys to wearing this much color (especially as we get older) is to ground it with some neutrals. That’s why the denim jacket helps so much. But I also think my bone leather wedge sandals help ground this multicolored look. After enjoying my Eileen Fisher Viv wedges so much last year, I decided to bite the bullet and purchase these bone leather Willow espadrille sandals. I kept looking for and ordering white espadrilles with no luck, and these just fit and feel fabulous. At my age, I’m done with shoes that don’t feel great. And these do. But hey, those Eileen Fisher Viv wedges are still available and at a fraction of the price.

Look #2

For the next look I topped the colorful A-line skirt with a denim tie hem top. This top works so well with this skirt and others because it doesn’t have to be tucked in order to hit at the right place to create those great proportions. I sized down to a small in this denim tie hem top.

I love my denim tie hem top, but I also found this great sleeveless substitute at Macy’s. In fact, I think I like that shirt better. It looks like it may have a better drape.

I finished the look off with my Born Inlet Sandals (mine are from J.JIll and the colors may be a little different). I carried my straw satchel from Brighton for a fresh summery look.

Look #3

I think the final look is my favorite, but, with the weather warming up, I think it’s the one I’ll be able to wear the least for now. But then again, when you’re on vacation in the mountains or at the beach, it’s always possible to have a chilly night or morning that calls for a pretty soft blue sweatshirt.

This time I kept the skirt and sweatshirt combo very casual and youthful with my sidewalk sneakers and canvas camera bag (extra 50% off with code SHOPSALE). Again, I really like how this slightly cropped sweatshirt hits at my true waist without having to be tucked. It helps me create great proportions and a slimmer look.

By the way, I got a little help from my St. Tropez sunless tanner with these looks, too. I like that you can actually see color as you apply this bronzing mousse, so you can see where you’re applying it. I definitely recommend investing in the applicator mitt, too.

Even though this skirt is just about sold out, this isn’t the last you’ll be seeing of it. I’ll be sharing it again in an upcoming video. And meanwhile, I’ve included a few other nice colorful A-line skirt options in the shopping widget below, too. An A-line skirt is a nice option for most body shapes, but especially a pear or hourglass shape (like me) or an H shape (because it helps create the illusion of a more defined waist and hips).

Blessed for My Day

One of my favorite parts about my job has been collaborating with other bloggers and YouTubers. I have met and gotten to know so many smart, godly and interesting women by working with them in these mediums. While I’ve always been one to have good friends, I don’t know that ever experienced anything quite like the support and comradery of these fellow influencers. There’s just something about helping another person to succeed in the very same area that you are trying your best to do well in. It’s the antithesis of competition, the solution to the comparison trap and the ultimate kind of collaboration.

But we don’t have to be in business to collaborate with other women in an effort to help them succeed. And we certainly don’t have to be bloggers or YouTubers. We can collaborate with other moms, other women at church, neighbors and women who are younger than us. In fact, today I’m reaching out to a slightly younger blogger to offer my assistance and a collaboration. You might reach out to a young mom, new neighbor, co-worker or friend to see how you can support her. After all, we’re never more successful than when we help someone else succeed.

  1. I love how you styled this skirt, all three ways. It would be such a fun piece to have for summer. I’m steering clear of shorts this summer as I recover from my two knee replacements. It’s not my scars that bother me, they are my metals of honor, but I need to wait until all the swelling is gone and the knees are the same size. Shorts seem to draw more attention to the knees than skirts and dresses. Good luck with your move this week. Such an exciting time for you both.

  2. Love this checked skirt……dress it up or dress it down.

All the best with you two “moving in”…..I know how disorganized it can be for a bit but we do find our way LOL. But it’s a lot of fun having a new place to decorate!

    Blessings,

  3. My friend wore this skirt to my daughter’s graduation bbq and it’s so cute! She wore it with a white gauzy blouse, but I love all the ways you styled it too. So versatile and fun!

  4. Hi, Kay! Three great looks with the skirt! I especially like the one with a denim jacket and the espadrille sandals. I love the sandals! 🙂 I used to have a skirt that was very similar that I now wish I hadn’t given away. Your post has encouraged me to be in search of another one. Thanks for always sharing the best information! Blessings to you and your husband as you move into your new home this week!

  5. Good luck with your move. We are 3 hours into our 14? Hour trip to NC. Movers took everything yesterday. Lots of tears as we left our home this morning. So excited to see our family in NC.
Moving is very stressful. I worked up to the love so I understand what you are going through. Our friends have been wonderful with providing us with a send off party, which was amazing, dinners, and walks.

  6. I like all three looks that you created, Kay! And I think you look great in the skirt. I don’t like me in skirts and I don’t know why. I wish you a very productive day.

  7. I like all three looks, Kay! The last look is my favorite: so relaxed and so cute. Wonderful BFMD! We can all be encouragers to women of all ages.
Hope your move in is going well. 😀
    Suzanne

  8. You look like a ray of summer sunshine in all these looks, Kay! I’m ready to sit back in my lawn chair with a tall glass of Lemonade! Thanks for this lovely fashion inspiration and have fun with the move🏡

  9. Love all three looks but I am drawn to color like a bee in a flowerbed. I have a really hard time making myself wear neutrals so I always am happy when you do a colorful post! Good luck with the move. They are indeed, very stressful.

  10. Love all 3 looks with the adorable skirt. My size is gone but think I have something else in my closet to try these looks out on. It looks so cute on you. I bought the white denim skirt earlier this Spring and have worn it twice all ready. I think it would look cute with the denim jacket and chambray shirt also. Loved the BFMD.

  11. This is one of the cutest outfits you’ve posted. Such a great look on you! Good luck with your move. I’m sure it’s a stressful time, but how exciting to be in your new home. I hope we get to see some pictures.

  12. If there is one thing my spirit needs this summer it’s beautiful uplifting color. I want to hear and see laughing people. I feel like we’ve been let out of prison and it’s time to strut our fun side. This outfit with its wonderful variations is just what we need. Let’s all go out and bloom where we are. Smile at everyone you meet. Make them wonder what you’re up to! 🥰

  13. I love this skirt and all three ways you styled it. I have something similar and will be expanding its use. I’m curious about why this qualifies as an a-line? It resembles a straight line and closer to a short pencil. When I worked in the industry, an a-line had a a fitted waist and the flared out in length-like the letter a. In any case, it’s a great look!

    1. Hi Kelly. I kinda wondered that too. But it may just be the way it fits me. 😉 When you lay it out it definitely has an A shape. I think my hips just fill it out. 🙂

  14. Hi Kay! I was so excited to see this post on this skirt because I ordered it already and waiting for it to come. Now I’ll have more ways to wear it including the white top you wore with it in another post.
We are still getting settled from our move to Florida from Virginia. It is alot of work and I find myself having to rest a bit each day. But so exciting to decorate with a whole new feeling in a new house.
I did take time off from my INSTAGRAM 60sassyandstylish., but I’ll be back with some Florida fashion vibes!

    1. Wonderful to hear from you Cindi. My husband and I were just talking this morning about how we would need to be patient with the process of nesting and decorating once we move in. I struggle so much when things are undone, but I know it’s important to take our time and enjoy the process. I’m so glad you’re enjoying your new surroundings. 🥰

  15. Hi Kay,
What a versatile skirt! Who knew? Besides you, I mean. He he he. And what a perfect time to purge your wardrobe! We should all move (and purge our whole house) at least every five years! Thanks for your great ideas for styling a very colorful, cute skirt.
