Happy Monday! We’ve got slightly cooler temperatures today so that makes looking at these photos of me wearing a sweater with jeans a little more palatable. Ha! But August is marching on, so we’re continuing to get us all geared up for fall. Today I’m sharing three things that are trending this fall.

This post contains affiliate links. When you shop through my links I potentially earn a commission on your purchases, but at no additional cost to you. Thank you so much for supporting my work here by shopping my links.

Trending this Fall
Relaxed Everyday Jeans ($20 off today; size DOWN) // v-neck cotton tee // wool blend v-neck button up cardigan // handbag (also includes shoulder strap) // jazzed up sneakers // customized multi strand necklace w/ black drusy // earrings

Now, other than the jeans and tee, I purchased what I’m wearing today in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale earlier this summer. The prices were great then, but those have all gone up to full price now. So let’s focus on the trends, and I’ll provide shopping links in the widgets below in more reasonable prices.

Trending This Fall: Relaxed Fit Jeans

First of all, you’ve probably heard by now that jeans are trending toward the more relaxed fit. Also trending are straight legs, flare legs, fuller legs, mom jeans and lantern silhouettes. That doesn’t mean you can’t wear your skinny jeans. But if you want them to look a little more current, simply wear those skinny jeans with other current pieces such as fashion sneakers, Chelsea boots with lug soles, or trending top styles. And many of the skinny jeans I’m seeing in the stores now have a bit wider ankle opening. We’re not seeing as much of the legging type jean.

Trending this Fall

For me, I love the fact that we can now wear a slightly more relaxed silhouette with a straighter or fuller leg and be in style. I do think it takes some time, patience, adjusting of the eyes and a lot of trying on jeans to find the ones that you can enjoy wearing. You might be interested to know that for every pair of jeans I show here at Dressed for My Day, I’ve probably tried on a dozen pairs that just did not work for me at all. Some have requested that I show those “failed attempts,” but I just can’t bring myself to do that. Plus, I don’t have time to show you what didn’t work!

Trending Relaxed Fit Jeans

I’ll eventually show a round up of the jeans I’m wearing this fall, I’m sure. But you can look back through previous posts and see me wearing other brands. These relaxed everyday jeans are Talbots’ edition of the new silhouette, and I love them. However, in these photos I’m wearing my true to size 8, but I’ve since then sized down to a 6 for a much neater fit while still getting that relaxed vibe. Definitely size down if you prefer a trimmer fit.

I appreciate the raw edge on these everyday jeans, but they also come in this darker wash with a finished hem. Today Talbots is offering $20 off their regular priced jeans and pants.

In the shopping widget below you’ll find a lot more jeans at a variety of price points. I only filled this widget with jeans I’ve personally tried and can wholeheartedly recommend.

Trending This Fall: the V-Neck Button Up Cardi

The second trend I’m introducing today is the v-neck button up cardigan. It’s still early to see a lot of these in the stores, but they’re coming in. Like I said, I purchased this Vince slub wool blend cardigan in the #NSale, so it’s twice the price I paid for it now. (Size down if you’re game.) But I’ll have more at reasonable prices in a shopping widget below.

Trending this Fall

I love this trend because I’m a sucker for a pretty cardigan. Plus, I love v-necks and I appreciate the versatility of these sweaters. Many of them (but not all) are made so that you can wear them alone or with a top underneath. And of course, if you do wear the cardigan with a tee or other top, you can wear it tossed over your shoulders or even wrapped around your waist.

This oatmeal colored cardigan would look great with other colors, too, but I love it paired with white. I think it looks fresh and clean.

Button Up V-Neck Cardigan

While we’re seeing these v-neck button up cardigans in all lengths, what’s really fresh this year are the more cropped styles. And don’t let that word “cropped” throw you. Even those are available in a variety of lengths and fullness. Some are fitted while others are boxy and still others are blousy and full. So if this length works for your body proportions at all, this cropped length, v-neck button sup sweater would make a fun and versatile addition to your fall and winter wardrobe. And the cropped length works beautifully with the higher waisted jeans and pants that are also in vogue.

Trending This Fall: Cropped V-Neck Button Up Cardigans
Madewell V-Neck Cardigan // Balloon Sleeve Cardigan // Puff Shoulder Cardigan

I’ve filled a shopping widget below with additional choices in this trend. I especially like the Madewell V-Neck Cardigan and the Balloon Sleeve Cardigan above. And I also purchased the Puff Shoulder Cardigan above in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, at a much more reasonable price.

Trending This Fall: Jazzed Sneakers

Well, that’s what I’m calling them. Jazzed. We’ve been seeing fashion sneakers everywhere for several years now. But with the new silhouettes in jeans, we’re seeing them play a bigger role this year. And while you can absolutely still wear your canvas sneakers (I’ll be wearing my black Converse for sure!), leather or faux leather is very current and a little more elevated.

Again, I took advantage of the price breaks offered in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and invested in these hot, hot, hot P448s. And they are extremely comfortable and fun. We’re seeing lots of leopard print, snake embossed and other fun patterns on sneakers this year.

Jazzed Sneakers

But I also purchased the Converse Chuck Taylor® All Star® Lift Platform Sneakers and I love them, too. They run VERY large, so I sized down a full size in those. They’re more reasonable in price and the platform gives them that jazzed vibe without all the bling.

I also pulled my Madewell retro trainers out from the back of the closet to wear lately. And those are still trending high. In fact, I’m seeing more and more options in these 1980s gym shoe style. I especially love Madewell’s selection and I’ve included several, but not all, of those in the shopping widget of jazzed up sneakers below.

Remember, you wear what you love. My job here at Dressed for My Day is to introduce the trends so we can be abreast of them. And I also want to show you how to wear them (as I learn myself!) so you can enjoy the ones you choose to try. But we also want to remain true to our personal style aesthetics, body shapes and proportions, lifestyles and comfort levels. And while I do believe age should not prevent us from wearing things, sometimes it does play a factor in choosing items that feel authentic to our stage of life.

But now you know three things that are trending this fall. And tomorrow I’m sharing the colors that are trending this fall. Yay for color!

Coach Handbag
My Coach turnlock clasp satchel has been restocked, but of course it is full price now. It is such a pleasure to carry.

Thank you so much for stopping in today to see what’s trending this fall. Now I’m going to put on something cool and lightweight and enjoy the final days of summer! I hope you do, too.

Blessed for My Day

You and I, we still have a purpose. You may have retired from your career and/or finished raising your family, but your service is not complete. I’m all for taking more time for rest, recreation and travel when we get to this phase of life. But let’s not forget that God still has a calling on our lives.

How can you serve someone this week and share God’s grace with them? I think that’s a worthy question to consider. It’s similar to the question my husband asked as he concluded his sermon from Acts 20 yesterday. I’m thinking of ways I can serve my family, my church family and others I encounter this week. Maybe you’d like to do the same.

But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. ~ Acts 20:24

xoxo, Kay

  1. You are just so beautiful inside and out. I hope I can look as put together and classic on my best day as you always seem to look. Have a great day!

      1. I also like the white tee and oatmeal color cardigan together. Like black & olive green, that is a color combo that I would not think of putting them together, but now I will. I’m so glad that I took advantage of the P448’s being marked down during the NAS and bought a pair. Now I’m anxious to learn how to fix the laces and start wearing them. I hope that you are getting a lot accomplished today.

  2. Kay, would it be appropriate to wear a slouchy shoulder bag with this to match Chelsea boots? I was just reading Saturday that slouchy shoulder bags will be trending this Fall/winter 2021/2022 season. Thank you!!!

    1. Sure. In fact, while it’s not slouchy of course, I did think later that I should have changed out the strap on this bag to make it a shoulder bag.

  3. I love cardigans and this style in particular. The reason I prefer them over jackets is they are more versatile. You can be wearing one inside and head out the door with it on. You can’t wear a jacket around the house. I was married to a, “If you’re going with me, you better hurry up” husband so I learned to be ready. Besides, they are so comfortable.
I love this neutral color. You look great!

  4. It’s encouraging to know that God still uses us as we age and sometimes decrease in abilities. I found a similar sweater with the cropped style and fuller sleeves that I’m looking forward to wearing this fall. My office does get cool in the winter so I’m looking forward to some covered ankle advice. In response to previous posts of yours, I purchased a knit blazer and an animal print tank. With jeans and flats, I think I looked modern and comfortable at an outdoor musical this weekend. Have a lovely week!

  5. I really like the button up cardigans. Could not do the Vince Because of it being wool. Allergic and the Color would not look good on me. Looks good on you though being a blond. I really like the balloon sleeve sweater cardigan in the purple color dahlia. Going to buy that one for sure. Not in my color group and I by usually, but I have decided to add some purple to my fall and winter wardrobe. It was my moms favorite color and I will think of her when I wear it.
