Add Some Playful Touches to Your Classic Wardrobe

Today I’m heading back to St. Augustine Beach, Florida, for one final set of fashion photos. Well I’m not personally going there, but that’s where these photos are taking us. I’m sharing a pretty warm weather sweater and some fun jeans that are perfect for spring. But I thought I’d also share a few tips to help you add some playful touches to your classic wardrobe.

You know I’m all for have a classic closet, one filled with the wardrobe essentials that give us versatility when putting together outfits. But I also think it’s important to let the more playful side of our personalities shine through our fashion choices occasionally.

Honestly, I have to remind myself occasionally that it’s okay to have fun with fashion. In fact, as we age I believe it becomes all the more important to add playful touches to your classic wardrobe with skill and discretion. Remember one of my mantras is that we’ll look more youthful when we stop trying to look younger and focus instead on looking current and modern. Adding the occasional playful touch is one way to look modern.

Personally, I’m not one to wear lots of bells and whistles, bead and baubles. Maybe you are and that’s your daily personal style aesthetic. But for those of us who maintain a more classic closet, I think it’s wise to remind ourselves to make some fun fashion choices occasionally. Choose the floral embroidered sweater. Go for the colorful jewelry. Add a fun hat. Buy the embellished girlfriend jeans. Add some bright pink nail polish.

You don’t always have to or need to do all of those things in one outfit, of course. But when you have a few subtle fun fashions in your closet it will be easier to put together an outfit that reflects the lighter side of you occasionally. However, when you go on vacation to the beach…pull out all the stops! This is the time to wear more color, add some flourishes, pile on a little more jewelry, paint your nails the color of the sunset and finish it all with a fun ruana or sparkly sandals. Let’s not forget to have fun with fashion.

My embroidered girlfriend jeans are a great place to start because the embellishment is minimal and blends in beautifully with the worn denim. But that detailing definitely adds a little whimsy to any outfit. These jeans run true to size for a relaxed fit. I’m wearing my usual size 1.

My cotton blend sweater features soft colored, scattered blooms. I love the way these embroidered flowers are situated naturally around the sweater, quite different from a “patterned” approach. My sweater is still available, but unfortunately it is not on sale. I was able to get mine when they were 25% and I had bonus points to use at Nic+Zoe. Blessed for My Day

Sunday after Abigail’s bridal shower I sat with my parents, Abby and her fiance for an hour or so just basking in the glory of that sweet occasion. We felt so full. And we ladies just overflowed with stories of how precious those three hours (that were supposed to be two!) were to us as dear friends and family members from all three generations had gathered around us. And we knew that we had been richly blessed.
