March 17, 2022

I’ve shopped Talbots for well over 35 years, and I know many of my readers are also frequent Talbots shoppers. So recently I ducked into the store to try on many of their newest spring fashions and took mirror selfies of my findings. I’d already placed a large order and I was still waiting for about half of it to arrive when I left Ohio to come to Georgia for the week. But in today’s try-on session of the Talbots March collection I mainly tried on things I thought some of my readers may be shopping for.

Sizing

I weigh about 155 on a good day and I’m holding steady so far at 5’8″ tall. I have a pear or hourglass shape and balanced proportions. That’s just to give you reference when you’re looking to see how these items fit on me.

I generally wear size 8 in tops, bottoms and dresses. But I sometimes wear the curvy fit size 8 if they are available. I generally wear a medium in all of those pieces, too. So unless I tell you otherwise, those are the sizes I’m wearing. I’ll also alert you if something runs small or large; otherwise, assume it runs true to size. That way I can focus on other factors.

ONE MORE THING…in all the photos I’m wearing my Sam Edelman Lior loafers in soft beige (they’re almost sold out), my Kendra Scott split hoop earrings and my Kendra Scott Olive necklace.

SALE Alert at Talbots

You’ll notice on the Talbots website that right now you can get 25% off everything. But they actually have a second promotion going on that they’re not advertising on the site. Use code SPRING40 to get 40% off your highest priced regular price item. You may need to register for their Classic Awards program to use that 40% off coupon code, but the program is free, no-risk and very beneficial if you shop Talbots even occasionally.

Remember Talbots carries most of their styles in a full range of sizes, including petite, petite plus and plus, as well as misses. They have curvy fit pants in many of their pant styles, too.

Let’s Check Out the Talbots March Collection

Talbots Perfect Crop Pants
Perfect Crops in Polished Paisley // Denim Square Neck Top

Perfect Crops in Polished Paisley // I generally like to wear solids and neutrals, but each spring or summer I like to have a pair of colorful print pants in my wardrobe. I wrote this post about how to wear print pants and not look childish. Oh, and I produced this video about the same topic last year. Anyhow, I really like these Perfect Crops in Polished Paisley. They fit true to size, but I’m wearing the regular fit and I will need to order the curvy fit. The Perfect Crops in Polished are 98% cotton and 2% Spandex for a really comfortable, breathable wear. And both fits come in petite sizes, too.

By the way, Talbots has other equally pretty printed crop pants here and in the curvy fit here.

Denim Square Neck Top // I think pairing a chambray or denim top with print pants is so smart. It adds some balance and anchors the outfit. This Denim Square Neck Top is surprisingly comfortable and lightweight. It’s 100% Tencel, so it has a nice drape and is very soft. It fits true to size. You know I would prefer a front tuck, but I showed it untucked, too, so you can see where it hits on me.

Paisley Print Pants
Perfect Crops in Polished Paisley // Button Detail Bateau Neck Top // Classic Denim Jacket in Sandy Wash

Button Detail Bateau Neck Top // I like to show pieces like the Perfect Crops in Polished Paisley with multiple pairings so you can see that they are versatile enough (or not) to make them a worthy investment. So I also paired them with the white Button Detail Bateau Neck Top. This tee fits true to size, but it is a roomy fit. You might could size down if you prefer a more fitted silhouette. It is comfortable and I like the slub cotton fabric. It’s a cotton-modal blend. The tee comes in other colors, too.

Classic Denim Jacket in Sandy Wash // I find Talbots’ Classic Denim Jacket in Sandy Wash to fit true to size. A couple of years ago their jackets almost always ran a little large on me, but I think they’ve adjusted their sizing a bit. My older Talbots jackets in small still fit nicely, but now I find myself opting for mediums more often. This Classic Denim Jacket has 1% Spandex, adding just a bit of stretch, which is nice in the sleeves and shoulders especially.

Floral Skirt at Talbots
Ruffle Tiered Skirt // Button Detail Bateau Neck Top // Classic Denim Jacket in Sandy Wash

Ruffle Tiered Skirt // I love the idea of this skirt, and I’m trying to wear more skirts these days. But I found little in the store that I would pair with it. It does look sweet with just a white tee and denim jacket. It runs true to size and has an elasticized waistband with a flat front, so you can do a front tuck easy enough. I think I would prefer it though with a slightly cropped sweater top that I could leave untucked. Also, I think you would definitely want to wear a slip with this slightly sheer Ruffle Tiered Skirt.

Stovepipe Jeans
Stovepipe Jeans in the Pacific Wash // Ruffle Pintuck Blouse // Shaker Stitch Bishop Sleeve Cardigan

Stovepipe Jeans in Pacific Wash // I’ve actually ordered these stovepipe jeans in this lighter wash, but I’m still waiting on them (unless they’ve arrived while I’ve been gone). So I thought I’d go ahead and try these out for size. I think they’re a very modern straight but fuller leg jean. They’re 70% Cotton, 29% Polyester, 1% Spandex, so they have a nice amount of stretch, but they still fit fairly slim in the hips, which is where I tend to have problems as a pear shape. Also, I just noticed that the fabric is different in the two washes. It looks like the lighter Compass wash stovepipe jeans may have a little less stretch because they have less polyester. We’ll see. But otherwise they do fit true to size. And I think they’re a great spring and summer jean because of the cropped length and wider leg opening. They also do come in petite, petite plus and plus sizes.

Ruffle Pintuck Blouse // I love the slightly old-fashioned print on this lightweight, button up Ruffle Pintuck Blouse. I also like the ruffle details around the cuffs and the pintucks. But because it is a little old-fashioned, I think you would want to pair it with something more modern. I like it with the stovepipe jeans. But I think I’d wear it with something like this Classic Cotton Pique Blazer rather than the Shaker Stitch Bishop Sleeve Cardigan I’m wearing above. But they didn’t have a Classic Cotton Pique Blazer anywhere near my size. (That’s one reason why I’d much prefer to shop online rather than in the stores these days.) It fits true to size and has nice room in the sleeves.

White Chinos
Shaker Stitch Bishop Sleeve Cardigan // Fancy Plaid Cotton Button Front Shirt in Indigo // Relaxed Chinos

Fancy Plaid Cotton Button Front Shirt in Indigo // The Fancy Plaid Cotton Button Front Shirt is quite lightweight, but really nice for spring and summer. It’s not too sheer, so I wouldn’t wear a tank or cami underneath (unless you just wanted to). I think it could be a very versatile closet staple and it also comes in a pretty raspberry pink plaid. It’s 100% cotton and comes in petite, petite plus and plus sizes.

Relaxed Chinos // I love Talbots’ Relaxed Chinos and I actually already own these white ones. They are a nice weight of cotton with 2% Spandex for a little ease of fit. They come in a lot of great colors and the full range of Talbots sizes. They fit a little lower on the waist than I would really prefer, but that doesn’t keep me from wearing them year after year. You can roll them up at the hem as shown above or wear them uncuffed. I think these are a great staple for spring and summer, especially if you anticipate not wear shorts as much as you might used to have.

Shaker Stitch Bishop Sleeve Cardigan // This punch pink Shaker Stitch Bishop Sleeve Cardigan is actually the one thing I left the store with. And I left wearing it! It’s 100% Pima cotton and I love the slightly puffed sleeves. It comes in a variety of other colors and creates a nice silhouette when worn over your favorite tees or tanks. But it also worked nicely over this Plaid Cotton Button Front Shirt.

White Chatham Pants
Shaker Stitch Bishop Sleeve Cardigan // Chatham Ankle Pants in white // Pebbled Dot Ruffle Shell

Chatham Ankle Pants // I love Talbots’ Chatham Ankle Pants because they are fairly lightweight, but they are a true dress pant, at least for the spring and summer. I also really like the length in these pants. But I’m wearing the 10 here because they didn’t have an 8. They look like they fit, but they’re really a little roomy in the waist and a touch snug in the hips. That’s because I really need the 8 in the curvy fit. That curvy fit really helps out us gals with an hourglass or pear shape. They do have the curvy fit in petite sizes, too. These pants feature a side zip and button closer, and they’re made of 53% Cotton, 41% Rayon, 6% Spandex for a polished look and some nice stretch. They come in several other nice colors, including black, navy and sienna brown in the curvy fit and more options in the regular fit.

Pebbled Dot Ruffle Shell // I already have this Pebbled Dot Ruffle Shell in the rattan and ivory, but this black and ivory option would work so nicely in many wardrobes. It’s lightweight and sleeveless, the perfect shell for wearing under a suit jacket or cardigan. It could make even a jeans outfit look a little nicer. It runs true to size and comes in petite and plus sizes, too. The Pebbled Dot Ruffle Shell is 100% Viscose.

Black and White
Hampshire Ankle Pants (lined) (available in curvy fit) // Button Detail Funnel Neck Tank in black

Hampshire Ankle Pants (lined) // Now these are different white pants from the ones two photos above. I guess I tried on a lot of white pants. Ha! These are also available in curvy fit and, once again, that’s what I would need. These Hampshire Ankle Pants are a nice straighter leg dress pant and they are lined in the white only. I love the length of these pants and the fabric. It’s 71% Polyester, 23% Viscose, 6% Spandex and the lining is polyester. I probably wouldn’t opt for these lined pants myself, but if I needed them for work I might. They’re also available in petite, petite plus and plus sizes. And they come in several other nice colors.

Button Detail Funnel Neck Tank // In the photo on the left I’ve tucked the hemline of the Button Detail Funnel Neck Tank under an inch or two, and that is probably how I would wear it. Or I’d have it hemmed up. In the photo on the right you can see the full length of this Button Detail Funnel Neck Tank, and I just think it’s a little long for most pant lengths these days. Otherwise, I do like this slimming Button Detail Funnel Neck Tank and think it’s a nice topper for dress pants of skirts. It also comes in navy.

Classic Chinos
Perfect Chinos // Fancy Plaid Cotton Button Front Shirt in Indigo

Perfect Chinos // I’m not sure I’ve ever even tried on the full length Perfect Chinos, but I really like these. They fit true to size; I’m wearing my usual 8. But once again I’d probably prefer the curvy fit in these 98% cotton, 2% Spandex pants. Unfortunately, the curvy fit only comes in black, white and navy, not the fawn (shown above) or the patio red that I’m most interested in. I may order the patio red in the regular fit and see what I think. Looking at the way they fit above, I think they would work. The length is good on my 5’8″ frame, and they do come in petite, plus and plus petite sizes.

with Lace Up Sweater
Perfect Chinos // Fancy Plaid Cotton Button Front Shirt in Indigo // Lace-Up Sweater in Raspberry

Lace-Up Sweater // I was surprised at how much I liked this Lace-Up Sweater. The raspberry color is very vibrant and pretty. The Lace-Up Sweater is 57% cotton and 43% polyester, but it feels like a cotton sweater. It comes in creamy cobblestone, indigo navy and tranquil blue, and you can get it in a full range of sizes. I like it over the Fancy Plaid Cotton Button Front Shirt for colder situations, but it feels nice by itself, too, as show to the right.

Lace-Up Sweater with Jeans
Stovepipe Jeans in the Pacific Wash // Lace-Up Sweater in Raspberry

I also like the length of the Lace-Up Sweater. It’s a nice length for wearing with cropped length jeans and pants without having to tuck it in. Above I’m wearing it with the Stovepipe Jeans in the Pacific Wash and you can see that it is short enough to create some nice proportions with these ankle length jeans.

And finally, a dress.

Floral Button Detail Fit & Flare Dress
Floral Button Detail Fit & Flare Dress

Floral Button Detail Fit & Flare Dress // I think this Fit & Flare Dress is a really nice option if you need a versatile dress for the spring and summer. The v-neckline, fit and flare silhouette and flutter sleeves are all quite universally flattering. And the black and white floral print is small enough to work nicely on even the smallest frame. The 98% polyester and 2% Spandex dress is fully lined and comes in petite sizes, too. I really loved the way this dress felt on. I’m wearing my usual size 8 comfortably. I’d probably complete the dress with classic nude pumps or sandals like the Mimi Woven Nappa Sandals in black. I purchased those and really like them. They had very few shoes available at the store, but I find Talbots shoes to generally run true to size.

Blessed for My Day

We are never more like Christ than when we show grace, patience and humility toward other people. Each day we have multiple opportunities to demonstrate these godly behaviors. When someone misunderstands us and treats us with scorn or disrespect we can choose to lash out or we can show patience and gentleness. When someone offends us or treats us unkindly we can push back or we can give grace and remember that our identity is not defined by them, but by a God who deeply loves us.

Sure, we can always argue that we need to look out for ourselves and not be doormats. And I would never encourage anyone to take abuse of any kind. But let’s face it; most of us will not face abuse today, just a little inconsideration. And when we respond the way Jesus did we have the opportunity to show the world around us a small glimpse of His character. What a powerful testimony of our gracious and loving Savior.

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. ~ Colossians 3:12-13

  1. I love this shaker sweater, what size are you wearing, do you think it’s true to size? I am a small in tanks and tees for Talbots?

  2. Sounds like you are having so much fun in Atlanta with your Mom and Abigail.
Love the Hot pink cardigan and wild print pants. I think you could do a lot with the sweater. You have showed so many cute outfits with it, The plaid checked blouse is very nice too.
I had to practice my patience and kindness yesterday when someone said something that upset me. Love this verse that you referenced.

  3. An exciting day ahead for you and your mom. I hope she finds a dress she loves.
I love the try on sessions. I think I am going to buy the “perfect chino”. I like them better than the “relaxed chino” bc the pockets lie flat. If you buy it in red, I’d love to see how you style them. An interesting color could make an interesting outfit.

  4. Hi Kay – sounds like you’re having a fun week of wedding preparation – enjoy! Cute outfits – I really like seeing the side by side pics where you added a sweater or jean jacket to the basic outfit. It’s a very good example of how much a third piece or completer piece can add to an outfit.

  5. Hi Kay,
I just wanted to share something I found out yesterday from Lily Silk: they will do customization, meaning they will lengthen or shorten items if you send your exact measurements, and it will be made to those measurements in the factory! This is a huge bonus for tall women (I’m 5’11”). The sleeves and body of blouses can be made longer, dresses can be made longer – it’s a game changer! Thought you could pass this good news along to your tall readers.

  6. Hi Kay! Can you comment on the denim jacket versus the Levi Trucker jacket? If you could only have 1, which would it be? Secondly, Do you think gingham will trend? Last, which is more versatile, the bishop sleeve Cardy or the pink pullover with white ties?
This is a very helpful post!!!!!!!!

    1. I love my Levi’s trucker jacket but it is boxier. If you prefer a more tailored fit I’d definitely recommend the Talbots jacket. Very nice. Gingham is trending right now but it is also a classic and you can wear it forever. And the pink cardi is more versatile since I can wear it over so many things and then remove if needed. But that really depends on your climate. I’m glad you found the post helpful. 🥰

  7. For some reason I am receiving two copies daily from your site. I prefer the original one that comes into my box under your name rather than the one that comes under the title, Dressed For My Day. Both have the same info but the original one is a little more eye catching in the list of daily emails.
    Thanks,
    Louie Towe

    1. Hi Louise. There should be a place to unsubscribe at the bottom of both emails. You’ll need to unsubscribe yourself. I can’t do it for you. Sorry for the confusion.

  8. I bought several pieces in the March specials. The black/white pants and the lovely gingham dress arrived yesterday. They are both perfect. I purchased the black/white leather espadrilles, what a cute look ! I am styling it with a black top and black cardigan. I tried it on and it looks just right. The dress is a little large, but it looks fabulous and meets my needs. I will wear it with a pretty ivory belt and ballet flats. I enjoy your blog and you YouTube channel so much.
