I gravitate toward fairly classic pieces, as most of you know. And that’s definitely what you’ll usually see here at Dressed for My Day. But today I thought I’d share a transition piece that’s new to me…and a little edgy. I’m sharing 3 ways to wear a utility boilersuit!
Well I got brave and ordered a boilersuit. Actually I ordered two. Make that three because I ordered one suit in two sizes. I mean, who knows what size she wears in boilersuits without trying them on, right?
As it turned out, the two I ordered both ran very true to size. Today I’m showing you this green 100% cotton boilersuit from Topshop. I’m wearing the 8, which is the same size I wear in most pants. (I’m 5’8″ and weigh about 148 lbs.)
For cooler days, you can easily wear this medium weight fabric boilersuit with a turtleneck or longsleeve t-shirt underneath. Mine is a pretty thick turtlneck sweater, and it’s still comfortable beneath the suit. But I’d probably prefer a thinner shirt if you had one. The olive green boilersuit would pair nicely with off white, black, navy or even soft pink.
Also, for this look I opted to wear my suede booties and carry my leopard print bag. But I could have reversed those accessories and worn my leopard print heels or flats here with a neutral handbag.
For a second option, I styled the boilersuit with my fig colored corduroy sneakers and a simple kerchief. My bandana style kerchief is no longer available, but I think this scarf from Target would work well, too. Or you could wear another more traditional bandana. Really, any splash of color is all you’ll looking for here.
I actually meant to add a solid colored tank with this look, too. But I forgot to take it with me to the photo shoot. But a simple tank would allow you to unzip the suit a little and show some more color and texture.
Let’s talk about how this boilersuit feels. I’m surprised. It wears like a dream. I think I’m fairly evenly proportioned, so if you have a long or short torso you could run into trouble. But who am I to say. Honestly, I think this is one of those pieces you just have to try on…to see how it feels and how it looks on you.
The cinched back provides plenty of give for sitting and bending. It also provides for a more flattering silhouette. And the front waistline has a little bit of gathering in it as well.
I see this final look as the more summery style. And it’s my favorite. I simply paired the boilersuit with my classic white sneakers and a straw canteen crossbody.
I’m so frustrated because I really thought I was going to be able to show you this brand new canteen crossbody and link to it. But, as was the case consistently last spring, these trending bags tend to sell out fast. So if you want one and see one you like, grab it. Here’s a rather similar option and then here is a little less expensive one. Mine was actually on the cheaper end, but it has a pricier look to it. And it’s gone. Oh, well.
Guess what? I’m actually keeping this boiler suit. I think it’s a reasonable price…for a whole outfit in one! It’s amazingly comfortable, fun to wear and, if I do say so myself, looks pretty dandy on. Plus, I like the fact that it’s a trending style – one that I can now embrace because I took the plunge and gave it a try.
By the way, I think the footwear options are endless here. This boilersuit will look great with sandals, pumps, ballet flats, you name it. But I have a feeling I’ll be throwing on my white sneakers most often to complete this look.
I mentioned this utility clothing trend in my spring 2019 fashion forecast. Check it out for more trends coming our way this spring.
How would you wear this utility boilersuit? Or would you? Ha! You won’t offend me at all if it’s not your bag. But I’m really happy with myself, being so brave and all. He, he!

Blessed for My Day
Today may you be encouraged by the Lord’s protection and presence in your life. May you not grow anxious when others do not understand you, argue with you or even mistreat you. May your confidence in the Lord’s goodness and grace be enough to sustain your courage and your fortitude.
If you have a hard task before you today, know that you do not endeavor it alone. Your God is for you, and He will provide all you need to do what He has called you to do. Be brave. Be confident. Be secure. You have the Mighty One on your side.
The Lord is for me; I will not fear;
What can man do to me?
The Lord is for me among those who help me;
Therefore I will look with satisfaction on those who hate me.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
Than to trust in man.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
Than to trust in princes. ~ Psalm 118:6-9
I like the final summer-y look! I had a jumpsuit back high school that would probably be classified today as a boiler suit and I loved it. It is such a trendy look, but I struggle with where I would wear it. I live in a very rural area, so many new styles don’t make their way here. So I think I might feel a little silly wearing it. Perhaps if I was a city girl I’d be ordering it now! So, I guess I’ll give it some time and hope it catches on here. 🙂
You mentioned in your email you are trying to get more efficient. That has been the theme of my January! Sometimes I just can’t get everything done and it all takes longer than I think it will. Then, I find myself behind. When I am busy with other things, like appointments and so forth, I really lose my stride. Then when things settle down, I can get caught up again. I have an empty schedule today and I plan to get some things done, finally! Good luck!
Hi Kay,
This is a trend that is not for me. I see it as more for the younger set. Good for you for giving it a go! Also, I am short-waisted and I have to stay away from styles that have this sort of very defined waist, as you mentioned in the post. Have a great day!
It’s cute but just like a romper, I hate the thought of having to basically get completely undressed to go tinkle 3,000 times a day 🙂
While I like the overall look of the boilersuit, as often as I use the restroom, the thought of getting undressed in public facilities makes me cringe. I wore jumpsuits back in the day and did not like undressing then to use the restroom. The scripture is so true and perfect for every day. On days that I have a lot I need to accomplish, I will make a list to keep me on track and so that I can enjoy scratching the tasks off, one by one. It also helps to not overcommit and know how to say, “no.” God bless!
Kudos to you for stepping out of your comfort zone! You wear it well! The last look you put together is my favorite…this is definitely not for me though. Also, like someone else mentioned, having to almost completely undress to use the bathroom, nah!
Thanks for always including encouragement through “Blessed for my day”
Ha, ha! The bathroom thing seems to be the consensus. And I considered that, too. But then I thought, how often do I actually use a public restroom? Not that often. Certainly not more than once in an outing. So I’m in! Thanks for sharing, Teri. 🙂
