First of all, let me apologize for the huge snaffoo yesterday. Many of you were able to read yesterday’s post, which was a J.Crew Try-On Session. But around noon my website had issues and I had to restore the last saved version. That meant I lost yesterday’s post…forevah and evah! Ugh. I started to rewrite it, but then realized I’d never get today’s post done if I backtracked like that. I was quite frustrated, but needed to move past my problems to tackle the work of the day. So…c’est la vie! Let’s move on with high hopes to today’s try-on session at Talbots.
Sizing
I’m 5’8″ and weigh about 150. I have an X or hourglass shape and fairly even proportions. I generally wear smalls or maybe mediums in shirts, tops, dresses, coats, etc. I almost always take an 8 in pants, skirts or dresses. But I often wear a 6 in jeans. My shoe size is 9.5 regular.
I’ll let you know if things run true to size and what size I’m wearing in the photos. But if you have any additional questions about fit, don’t hesitate to ask in the comments.
The Deal at Talbots
Talbots has had some of these styles in for over a month now. Others are brand new for October. They’re offering 25% off your entire purchase, but there are some exceptions, such as their Art of the Scarf collection, Barbour®, Blondo®, Superga®, SPANX®, Keds® and Sperry® products. They also have deeper price reductions on summer sale items.
I felt like a lot of the equestrian themed clothing looked a little frumpy and dated. But, as usual with Talbots, I also found some gorgeous pieces. I’ll try to remember to fill you in on the ones I took home.
My Fitting Room Session
By the way, you’ll notice my hair go from long to short and back a few times. Hahaha! I took some of these photos Monday morning, ran to the hairdresser and then returned for a few more.
marled cowlneck sweater in cerise pink (wearing small, TTS) // I do love this marled, cable cowlneck sweater. It’s cozy and soft, but the color is stunning. It has just little touches of other colors in it for interest. I’m wearing my usual size small and feel very comfortable.
slim ankle jeans in natural (wearing size 6, later sized up to 8) // I forgot at first that I usually get white jeans in a size 8 instead of 6. I’m pretty sure that in this photo I’m wearing the 6, but the 8 fit so much better. I just think white (and evidently off-white) jeans and pants do better in the next size up. These are a nice weight of denim and are not see-through at all. So versatile!
Classic Cotton Shirt – Woodland Berry Gingham (size small) // I’ve tried this woodland berry gingham shirt on so many times; I finally bought it! I just love this bright berry color. And it looks great with the winter white jeans, but even better with blue denim. I did end up getting the medium just because I want it a little roomier in the shoulders.
Ryan Keeper Loafers – Nubuck Leather in buff pink (size 9.5 regular/ TTS) These comfy loafers are available in so many great shades. And they also come in wide and narrow fits. I always get a pair of shoes to try my clothes on with at Talbots (and most stores!), and these just happened to be the ones I picked up for this try-on session. But they are super shoes if you’re looking for classic loafers.
Modern Ankle Jean – Genuine Medium Wash (size 8, size up) // I’ve also tried on these straight cut ankle jeans several times. I love these high waisted jeans, but I can’t justify buying them in this medium wash and they didn’t have the darker wash in the store. I’m thinking about getting them. They’re so comfortable and trendy. But I did size up to my regular pants size instead of getting my usual jeans size.
Talbots Shetland Wool Blazer — Tattersall Plaid (wear size 8, TTS) // I love this burgundy plaid blazer, too. It fits true to size and feels comfy. I decided on a different plaid blazer for this year, though, because I think I look better in longer cuts.
Talbots Classic Cotton Shirt – Dazzling Paisley (size small, TTS) // Here’s another great colorful shirt. All of these classic cotton shirts are fairly lightweight, perfect for layering under sweaters or jackets.
Fleece Lined Quilted Vest in eggshell blue (size small, TTS) // These vests come in several great colors. I think this eggshell blue looks great with this shirt and others at Talbots. But I went home with the vest in woodland berry to pair with the shirt I bought.
Talbots Pointelle Detail Dolman Sleeve Sweater in scallop pink (wearing small, size up for roomier fit) // I like the dolman sleeves on this pale pink sweater (available in other shades, too), but I would need to size up for a little roomier fit. I don’t like the way the small hugs the waistband of the pants. But this sweater is supposed to be fitted at the waist, so keep that in mind. I just think you’d want a more relaxed fit. The sweater is designed to make your shoulders look a little broader and your waist more narrow. But if it’s hugging your waistband like this is on me, you lose the effect because it looks tight.
Hampshire Ankle Pants in camel (size 8, a tad snug in waist) // I keep trying to find a pair of dressy camel colored pants that I like and feel good in. These weren’t them. They feel a bit tight in the waist and I don’t like the cut for ankle pants. But otherwise they are quality, well-constructed pants. So if Hampshires normally fit well on you, these will, too.
Chatham Button Hem Ankle Pants in cafe (size 8, TTS) // These might could be the camel pants I’m looking for, but I think I should try them in the curvy fit. These chatham ankle pants have long been favorites of mine. But I’m getting a little tired of close fitting pants. I’m looking for more of a trouser, I think.
Talbots Hampshire Ankle Pants – Luxe Flannel Plaid (size 8, TTS) // These pants are fully lined. So if you’re cold natured, these might be a win for you. But this menopausal gal can’t deal with lining! Very nice pants, though.
Stretch Corduroy Straight Leg Pants in ivory // I so badly wanted to go home with these straight leg ivory corduroy jeans. They fit so well, feel great on, move and stretch with you and are so versatile. But I’ve already purchased the corduroy stretch jeggings (I think they’ll work better with my boots) in harvest wheat, so I couldn’t get these, too. But you can!! Somebody sure needs to. Just sayin’.
Silk square status scarf // Talbots has a number of pretty scarves this season. I like the colors and prints in this one.
Leopard Faux Fur Vest (wearing small) // I wanted to love this leopard faux fur vest. But I think I just didn’t pair it with the right things. The catalog shows it worn over a black sweater and black jeans or pants. I think that may be the way to go. It would probably also look good over the off white jeans and the denim shirt.
Girlfriend Chinos in dark moss (size 8, TTS) // These pants are lightweight, but I like them so much for transitional dressing. And I’ll be wearing them next spring and fall, too. Shoot! I’ll wear them in the summer, too. These dark moss pants will be so versatile. But they come in a number of other great shades, too. (I have five pairs of these chinos, so obviously I love them!)
Classic cotton shirt – denim (size medium, sized up for roomier fit in shoulders) // I have one chambray shirt, but I came home with this one because of the darker wash, the tailored fit and the soft drape of the fabric. I have so many uses for this shirt. I really could have (and maybe should have) kept the small, but I want this shirt to be uber comfortable.
Classic corduroy jacket in rich burgundy (size 8, TTS) // This longer corduroy blazer is a plum It comes in other shades, too. I love it, but sometimes Talbots blazers are a little blousy in the bust on me. Ahem. And this is one of those times. It’s really a deep violet burgundy. I wouldn’t even call it burgundy. It’s more of a plum/berry. I’m probably just confusing things!
These are all pieces I explained in detail already, but I just wanted you to see the combination. I love this trio! Those are probably not the best shoes for it, but they’re all I had.
Leopard collar sweater (size medium) // They didn’t have a small available to try in this chic sweater, but I think the medium fits nicely. I was surprised at the quality of this sweater and collar; I don’t know why. The collar is made of a sturdy but soft fabric that will keep its shape. This sweater would look great with the stretch corduroy jeggings in havest wheat or the Hampshire ankle pants in camel.
Cashmere Audrey Sweater in twilght teal (size small) // I love Talbots’ cashmere sweaters. I must have a dozen I’ve accumulated over as many years. Yes, they really do last that long if you care for them properly. (See this post for my tips on caring for cashmere.) The Audrey sweaters feature an attractive 3/4 length sleeve and an Audrey neckline (kind of a cross between a crew neck and a boat neck, very flattering!) I have my eyes on this twilight teal, but there are so many pretty colors. And check out this rich leopard print one.
Now that I look back over these photographs and the Talbots website, I realize I didn’t skim the surface of all the things I would have liked to try on for you. I’ve limited myself to just a very few purchases, but I was really trying on for you gals! Anyhow, be sure to check out my Talbots Favorites page for all the items I love. You can always return to it through the menu at the top of the website under SHOP.

Thanks so much for stopping in today. Let me know if you have questions. Have a lovely day!
Blessed for My Day
Do you realize, dear gal, that nothing you can do can make you fit for heaven? That may seem like bad news, but actually it’s very good news. That one truth gives you the freedom to stop trying so hard. You can’t earn your way to heaven…on your best day or your worst day.
Instead, Jesus has paid for your sins so that you can have a relationship with God, not only in heaven, but here and now. He has done all that needs to be done. All you have to do is accept that free gift and turn your life over to Him in response. The good news is that as you live and walk with Him, He will get you fit for heaven along the way. Amazing, huh?
For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins… And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. ~ Hebrews 10:4,10
I love your new haircut. It is so fresh and youthful! My favorites are the burgundy jacket and the leopard collar sweater. I’m getting ready to style a similar jacket from Loft very soon. Hope today goes smoothly for you!
Ah, yes I love those pieces, too. I bet you’re getting the jacket I got from Loft. The red corduroy one?? https://shopstyle.it/l/8pDE I can’t wait to wear it!! Thanks so much for the well wishes and compliments on my hair. I’m loving my hair. And my day is going well. Yay! I just got off the phone with tech support from my website hosting company and they assure me we’re on the upswing! Praise the Lord!
Always love your try on sessions, especially the ones from Talbots! My budget won’t allow me to buy everything I’d LOVE to have but also your try on sessions allow me to see how the clothes really fit a normal size woman….not these skinny models. Even though I’m much shorter than you are (I wear petites) I can judge how the items will fit me because our body proportions are very similar. Sure sorry you had tech issues yesterday. That is NOT fun!!
Hahaha! My budget won’t allow that either! In fact, I’m all spent out for the fall and winter. But I still have plenty you gals haven’t seen to shown. And I love restyling pieces throughout the season.
Tech problems are getting better as I type! Praise the Lord! I am in so far over my head; it isn’t even funny. But the Lord is at work. 🙂
Great selections Kay! All the pieces look versatile! Thanks for all the fitting tips here! Your new haircut looks very pretty & polished! -this looks like a fun fitting room day!
Thanks so much Betty. I’m enjoying the new hairstyle. I style haven’t washed it yet, but I’m sure I can manage it when I do. Thanks for reading!
❤️ the new hair cut!
Thanks, sweet gal!!
What did James have to say about your hair being shorter? I think you look very nice! Kay, you look fabulous in coral,, berry, and bright turquoise! I sure hope that technology behaves itself for you today. That can be so very frustrating. Keep on smiling!
Hahaha! You’re getting in muddy water!! LOL! Well, he didn’t want me to go too short. It’s funny. I don’t remember him ever saying he preferred it short, but when I told him I was going shorter he looked a little dismayed. But bottomline, he wants me to be happy. So we’re good!
Tech issues seem to be clearing up. I’ve spoken to two very helpful men in tech support today. And I think they’re going to get me squared away. Praise the Lord!
Love your new do, very flattering!
Thanks so much, Teri. I’m enjoying it!
Love love Love the new haircut! I’m just not impressed with most of Talbots clothing, seems dated and frumpy, with a few exceptions.
Thanks so much, Kim. You know, I have shopped Talbots for years and years. And I love the quality. But honestly, seasons are hit and miss with them. Some seasons I love most of the line. And other seasons I just don’t. Honestly, I’m not as thrilled with this season’s collections as I have been others. But they have high quality wardrobe essentials. So that’s why I continue to shop there. And their jeans fit me well. So there’s that. But I can certainly appreciate your perspective. Thanks so much for reading and looking them over anyhow!
Love your haircut – it is so flattering.
Thank you very much, Tracy. I’m enjoying it!
Your new haircut looks great!
Thank you, Bev. I think I’m going to like it for the fall and winter for sure!
Great new hairstyle! I liked a lot of the clothes in this post. Question: Do you think mixing patterns is here to stay? Maybe it’s just because I’m getting older, but I prefer to see only one patterned piece and the rest of the outfit in solids. One young clerk told me not to be so matchy-matchy, and I wanted to say that’s better than clashy-clashy, ha. Or maybe I should just get used to it and learn to embrace it! 🙂 Love your posts and read them every day!
Thanks. In answer to your question, I do think mixing patterns is here for a long haul, at least. I think the culture is in a season of “no holds barred,” so fashion is reflecting that sense of lawlessness, if you will. But really it’s all about freedom. And you absolutely have the freedom to NOT mix patterns. And there’s nothing wrong with a more classic style in which one pattern is featured against a pallette of solids. So shame on the sales clerk for reprimanding you! But yeah, you don’t have to EMBRACE it, but you’re probably going to have to tolerate mixed patterns for a while. Hahaha! Thanks for the question. It’s a good one.
I love your new haircut—it actually makes you look younger, Kay!! I’m a Talbots fan but usually wait until items go on sale. Question, my nephew is getting married in a few weeks and I wondered if you have any suggestions for a classy, dressy look for a Fall wedding! Thanks!
Oh, how I wish there was a Talbots in Austria. Their jeans usually fit me the best, and now that I’ve lost some weight, I’d like to invest in a new (hopefully smaller!) pair. I guess I’ll have to work in a Talbots visit during my Christmas trip to Florida. Thanks for sharing what you tried on.
Ah, yes. Well abolutely get a Talbots fix during Christmas! Take care. 🙂
Love your hair!!
I like Talbots for classic clothing but I also love a little edge to my clothing which Talbots doesn’t have. But…for classic pieces and jeans that fit-win win!!
Yes, I completely agree Kathy. Thanks for reading. ?
Your quotes from Scripture are inspiring.
