We’re supposed to be getting cooler tempertures next weekend (fingers crossed!). But it looks like I’ll still be wearing what we’re all calling transitional outfits until then. By this time of year I’m just ready for a change of color and texture even if it’s too early to layer on any warmth. Plus I’m done with shorts! What about you? So today I’m simply rounding up all the transitional outfits for early fall that I’ve been sharing and wearing. I thought these might provide a little inspiration as most of us continue to wait for those real fall-like temperatures.
The common elements
I’m finding I have a few pieces in my wardrobe that I’m constantly rushing through the laundry to wear again these days. These common elements show up in so many of my transitional outfits for early fall because they’re easy to mix and match, lightweight and easy to layer, neutral shades and reminiscent of fall.
Are you wearing these on repeat, too?
- black t-shirt
- white t-shirt
- straight leg cropped jeans
- cropped cotton pants
- chinos
- chambray shirt
- graphic t-shirts
- leopard belt
- neutral loafers
- denim jacket
- lightweight casual cardigan
In fact, today I’m putting away most of my pure summer clothes and pulling out my fall and winter wardrobe. But I have a feeling the common elements above will continue to be my mainstays for another week or so. Plus, these items will factor into my cooler weather looks later on, too.
The Transitional Outfits
For each of the outfits below I’m simply providing shopping details in the captions. But I’m also providing links to the original blog posts so you can get styling or size details if you would like to know more. Just click on the photo or the link below it for the full post.
#1 – Lunch & a Matinee
This first look works so well because it starts with a simple tee and your favorite jeans. Just layer on a cotton sweater for cool theathers, churches, restaurants or airplanes. Add some fun with animal print or other trending elements.
#2 – Chic with a Splash of Color
I know the t-shirt in this look is a little expensive. But you can find other great options here and here to duplicate this look easily. I find myself wearing this outfit at least once a week. (I just ordered one of these!)
#3 – Jeans, Tee and Sneakers
This outfit is all about the sneakers! When you have a pair of great shoes – such as these chic metallic & leather sneakers or a pair of leopard print slip-on sneakers – you can keep everything else simple and still look pulled together.
#4 – The Warm/Cool Outfit
I’m hot. Now I’m cold. Now I’m hot again. Now I’m cold again. Ugh! Ever feel that way? At this time of year, it’s smart to have a comfy, neutral colored cotton sweater you can slip on over anything. In this outfit I’ve just slipped it over my favorite white tee.
#5 – Upscale T-Shirt & Jeans
I called this an “upscale t-shirt” simply because it feels luxurious and it’s a nice change from the basic black or white tee. But it’s available for a song! And this soft, plush tee will come in handy next spring, too.
#6 – Sweet Travel Dress
Every so often I just want to slip on a dress! I like the simplicity of a one-and-done. And this one from Title Nine has super powers! You’ll have to check out the original post to discover what nifty tricks this beauty can do.
#7 – Black Tee & Jeans
I don’t know if I’m just really enjoying outfits with a black tee or I’m just really enjoying this black tee. But ever since I purchased this particular black tee I find myself reaching for it constantly. I like that it has a nice polished look to it without being fancy or stiff. And the neckline keeps its shape. Also the black stays a true black even after many washes.
#8 – Denim Skirt & White Tee
All I would change out in the outfit below at this point would be the sandals. I’d probably prefer some neutral flats or sandal booties with this easy-to-wear outfit.
#9 – Khaki & Chambray
You won’t go wrong adding khaki or chambray to your closet. These wardrobe essential pair beautifully, but they also contribute to so many other great looks.
#10 – Textured Kimono
I’ve loved wearing this rosy colored textured kimono this fall. It’s also available in oatmeal and soft charcoal. I’m surprised that it’s still fully stocked. This soft, drapey accessory is so versatile and will be useful again in the spring.
It looks like everything else featured in this look is still available, too. And these premium denim jeans are marked down 33%.
#11 – Soft, Muted Neutrals
I think this is my favorite outfit in the mix. Wait, no. Well, maybe. Gee, it’s a toss up. I love so many of these. Maybe we don’t need fall to come quite yet after all!!
#12 – Going Wild with Animal Print
I have to force myself not to wear this fun t-shirt everyday. I really do. I reach for it and tell myself, “No, you just wore that yesterday!…and the day before!”
So many of the pieces featured in these looks are still available. And many of them at reduced prices. Let me know if you have any questions, but remember, you can also click through the link in the captions to see the original post. Or you can click the photo itself!
I hope you gained a little inspiration from my dozen transitional outfits for early fall. And soon we’ll be layering on the heavier pieces and zipping up our boots!

Blessed for My Day
I’ve heard it said that people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Do you believe that to be true? I certainly do. And yet I sometimes live as though what I know needs to be shared and expressed regardless of how I come across.
Today let’s be careful to communicate compassion and love and grace. Yes, if we know truth, we should be faithful to share truth. But not until and unless we have first expressed the love of Christ through our attitudes, demeanor, deeds and behavior. I’m working on this. Maybe you need to, too?
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. ~ 1 Corinthians 13:1
Kay, here in my neck of the woods, Colorado, I’ve been up since 3:30 scouring God’s Word on the subject of Grace and Truth! “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14. Grace always follows truth with Jesus and He’s our model for daily living as we dwell among others. Such a sweet time with the Lord this morning! Imagine my delight when I read your BFTH which directly speaks about this very subject! When this type of thing happens, I know God is driving home an all-important lesson for me to learn or remember. When I share Biblical truth to someone it won’t be perceived or received without Biblical grace following! Oh my what a lesson I need to practice. I appreciate how you share God’s truths but always in the sweet tone of His grace! Be blessed today dear girl!
I love this recap of 12 of your fall transition outfits. There are several I really like and that given me inspiration. The highs here are still in the 90’s, so wearing layers of any kind is not what I’m doing. However, I can’t wait to need a sweater or jacket! Fabulous BFMD! ?
I really like your haircut. It makes you look younger.
I too, love this recap. It is nice to see the different looks on one page. Thank you!
Thanks for putting these all in one post!
I love all of these ideas, thank you so much for sharing them!
Great! I’m glad you enjoyed the post. ?
