There’s just something about fall that beckons us to retreat. I can remember going on fall retreats as far back as middle school when I’d attend Girl Scout camp-outs, 4H jamborees and youth group conferences. Later I attended college fall retreats and then women’s retreats. And just recently James and I joined couples from our church for an overnight getaway at a beautiful camp in Indiana. So today I’m sharing what to wear to a fall retreat!
Perhaps the common denominator for all retreat wardrobes is a good pair of jeans. While you might also want to pack a pair of moisture wicking hiking pants, you can’t go wrong with well fitted blue jeans. Mine are from Ann Taylor and feature a high waist, skinny fit and a dark wash. I’m wearing a size 6, classic fit.
I find that button up shirts work nicely for fall retreats for several reasons. They’re easy to layer for warmer and cooler temperatures as the day progresses or you move from meeting rooms to the outside. Plus, you can top a button up shirt with a sweater, sweatshirt or puffer vest, like the one I’m wearing. For a different look, you can wear a t-shirt under an unbuttoned or partially buttoned shirt.
Isn’t this woodland berry plaid shirt pretty? I’m wearing a medium for a roomier fit. I think the color looks so smart with blue jeans. It pairs beautifully with this woodland berry quilted vest, of course, but I can also wear it with a denim jacket.
Appropriate and well fitted footwear is crucial for a fall retreat. If you’ll be walking from sleeping accommodations to meeting areas to dining hall, I suggest packing shoes with good traction that are comfortable and, if possible, water proof…just in case.
I picked up my Sperry Saltwater Waterproof boots in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and they’re now available at Nordstrom Rack. Nordstrom has other color combinations to choose from and they’re currently marked down 40%. I also love these Sperry Winter Lux all-weather boots at Talbots. They’re pricey and not part of the current Friends and Family Sale, but they would probably last you for years.
I suggest keeping jewelry to a minimum when you’re on retreat. This isn’t the time to be fussing with all that stuff! So I only wore my gold hoop earrings (similar), nothing else.
Bottom line, keep it simple, dress comfortably and be prepared for changes in the weather. Then you’re prepared to have fun, relax and rejuvenate.
Are you going on a fall retreat? I’d love to hear about it!

Jesus is…well, Jesus. He’s God Himself. But as He walked this earth in a human body He knew and respected His limits. He knew when it was best to retreat, withdraw, get alone. I noticed a few things about Jesus’ pattern of retreat. First, He made time for being by Himself. Second, He intentionally broke away from others, even those He loved and led. Third, He used this time to draw close to the Father.
I encourage you to do the same. We all need time alone, away from those we love and minister to and in the presence of God. Your retreat could be a women’s or couples retreat to a mountain getaway or it could be a day at a local park. But take time to withdraw from your normal responsibilities and draw close to the Lord.
Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself. ~ John 6:15
Very pretty outfit on you Kay! And the scenery is gorgeous! Blessings!
Thanks so very much Ginger. It was a lovely crisp morning following a rainy night. Just beautiful!
That’s my kind of outfit Kay! Love the color on you! I have a pink vest similar to yours, so that blouse you are styling gave me an idea for another option, as I usually wear mine with a plain cream sweater. Love the Sperry boots as well! I really need to invest in boots that style, they are so versatile. Blessed for My Day, such good advice.
Great to hear, Gina. I love it too. Thanks for sharing!
That’s a perfect retreat outfit! We have our women’s retreat coming up Nov 1 in the hills not far from Yosemite. It’ll be a beautiful weekend to gather with just over 100 women as we enjoy the fall leaves and crisp air.
Oh my! That sounds amazing. I’ve never been there. I do hope you all have a wonderful time. Thanks so much for sharing.
Hey Kay!! Thank you so much for this post. Love your outfit. The colors are so pretty. This is my kind of outfit. Hope you have a Wonderful time on your Retreat. I totally agree with you on getting away to spend time alone with Jesus. You can pray and talk to him just like he is sitting right next to you. It makes you feel wonderful! Hope you have a great day!! ???……..Linda
Hi Linda. yes, we had a lovely time. We had time to visit with other couples, but also time for just the two of us. Plus, I definitely felt the Lord’s presence and stirring. Thanks so much for reading and sharing. I’m glad you enjoyed the post.
