Today we’re kicking off a week of previewing the 2020 Spring trends in fashion, makeup and hairstyles. To get this party started I’m sharing a complete and easy spring outfit that features a favorite fashion piece among most of us gals – blue jeans! But I’m also showing you 5 spring trends you can easily wear with your favorite denim.
You gotta love a trend that incorporates easily into your favorite blue jean uniform. And one of my go-tos during spring is simply jeans, a simple top and a third piece of some sort. That’s what this look is all about.
Spring Trend Alert – While you’ll still see and wear skinny jeans and boot cut or flare leg jeans, straight leg cropped jeans are coming out on top this spring and summer. Interesting hems – or no hems – will continue to trend as well.
I picked up these straight leg ankle jeans with a raw hemline last summer, but they’re still available and at a sweet price. I’m wearing my usual 29 for reference. I find these jeans to be very comfortable and just long enough for my 5’8″ frame.
Spring Trend Alert – One trend I love but will probably only participate in in small doses is the use of 60s and 70s inspired prints. Since it’s a little early to be shopping full on for spring, this short sleeve jersey wrap top was the only one I could find that sorta fits the bill. But we’ll be seeing even more geometrics in fun, retro colors and prints.
This drapey jersey knit top is extremely comfortable and easy to wear. While it looks like it might ride low at the neck when you see it on the website, I had absolutely no problem wearing it more modestly. And a v-neck is almost universally flattering on us gals. I’m wearing a size 10 because that’s what I always order in shirts that are very fitted.

Spring Trend Alert – Link chain jewelry continues to trend in popularity this spring and summer. While the large chunky chains are definitely in, I think the easiest way to wear this trend is in a dainty necklace that layers easily with other pieces.
Both of my necklaces are silver plated brass and they feel like a nice quality, but also lightweight. I’m wearing the Parker Link Collar necklace and the Compass Coin Pendant necklace. They’re also both available in 18 carat gold plate.
Spring Trend Alert – The fashion show runways featured trumped up trench coats, but the underlying message is that this closet staple is taking center stage as a spring topper this season. You can certainly wear a more interesting one if you want, but you’ll look perfectly in style in a well-fitted classic trench of your choosing.
I purchased a full length light pink trench coat last year that I’ll definitely be wearing this spring, but I also wanted a shorter trench jacket in a more classic shade. I love this navy one from Ralph Lauren (and the price is pretty good, too). I’m wearing a medium and it fits so nicely. But I returned it for the black. It’s also available in moss green and sand. The short trench coat is water repellent.
Spring Trend Alert – Another blast from the past, the baguette bag is trending this spring. You may have seen your teenage daughter carry one of these in the late 90s or early 2000s. I remember Abigail had a black one. They’re small, but not as small as the obnoxious micro bags, and can be worn comfortably and securely with the strap over the shoulder and the bag tucked just under your arm.
I’m surprised to find out that my yellow baguette is already sold out, but this one is similar (and cheaper!). And here’s another nice option that comes in black, soft pink or pale yellow. Lovely!
Spring Trend Alert – Good news! While flats are nothing new, they’re peaking in popularity this year. I think this shift is largely due to the fact that straight leg ankle jeans look so good with flats. Think loafers, pointy toe flats, ballet slippers and mules.
My pink suede flats run true to size and also come in Tuscan Sun yellow, zebra print and leopard print. And yes, animal print will continue to be popular through the spring and summer.
Use code V2A7 to save 20% and get free shipping on my flats through Thursday only.
I’ll be talking more next week about how to plan your spring wardrobe, but I’m working on adding a few classic pieces to mine. And I think the addition of these five simple trends will help me feel contemporary and on trend, but still true to my personal style.
So there you have it. Five spring 2020 trends you can easily wear with jeans:
- 60s and 70s inspired prints
- link chain jewelry
- trench coat
- baguette bag
- flats

Going the extra mile. It’s one of those things that sounds great on paper but feels tiresome and bothersome, at best, in real life. When we sit in circles with Bibles in our lap and talk about Jesus’ call for His disciples to go further, give more, forgive over and over and love everyone, we nod our heads and agree that this is good. But before we get to our cars and drive off many of us have already shaken off those good intentions and are once again determined to do the least possible to get by.
But if we were to take Jesus seriously today and really go above and beyond, what would that look like? Maybe it would mean sitting a little longer with that hurting friend, chatty grandchild or bothersome neighbor. Maybe it would mean serving our spouse more without any expectations of a return on our investment. Or maybe it would mean praying blessings for someone who has caused you nothing but grief. Are you willing to do the unimaginable today for a Savior who did the unthinkable for you?
You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. ~ Matthew 5:43-45
Thanks, Kay! I love seeing new trends. Enjoy your time with your family.
Thanks, Kay! I like everything you modeled today: the new trends are the styles that I feel the most comfortable wearing. The pink shoes are too cute. Unfortunately, I can’t wear pointy toes. I’ll look for flats with a more rounded toe in pink or some other color or pattern that I normally wouldn’t try. You are challenging me to try new color combinations, to try new ways to wear the things that I have, and to add new things with care.
Also thanks for the encouraging Bible lesson.
Enjoy your family time!
Suzanne
Kay, Your top is so pretty! I like the print and the style, but I prefer short sleeves that are just a little longer and not quite so fitted. If I carried a handbag that little, I would have to carry a tote as well, which defeats the purpose. Have fun on the golf course today!
This is such a great post, Kay and loving all these fashion forecasts. I had one or two of those bags in the late 90’s (I was a teen back then in my late teens 🙂 but had no idea they were called baguette bags. I may still have one somewhere, but I’m sure I donated a red one I had. LOVE that flats are trending, I might be a little bit “in stlye” for once 🙂 as I so rarely wear anything with heels! Thanks for sharing, I really enjoyed this post!
Kay, your smile brightens up my entire work space! I love opening your emails and seeing the pretty outfits you put together. You outer beauty matches your inner beauty!!! Rhonda
I’ve been in a neutral rut all Winter. Wonderful to see your use of color here. . I’ve noticed the trend toward flowered tops.. I love it that we are all over the match your poo look with shoes and bag. This could be fun.
Dear, oh dear. Thanks spell check, that should read matchie poo.
I have to ask, why did you decide to return the navy trench and exchange it for the black? I love both colors!
Hi Karen. Yes, I do too. But I decided that the black would be most practical for coordinating with the rest of my wardrobe. I also picked up a khaki colored unlined trench jacket recently for a steal so it will go with most anything the navy one would have but the black will work with other things in my closet.
