Spring is in the air! And today I’m sharing my Spring Wardrobe Essentials list. If you’re a subscriber, you also have access to my complete printable Spring/Summer Wardrobe Essentials checklist in the Freebies for Subscribers page. (Check your daily or weekly email for the subscriber access code! It’s always at the bottom.) But I’ll simply be sharing some of the highlights from that list in this must-read post.
What are Wardrobe Essentials?
When we talk of wardrobe essentials we’re generally speaking of the most basic pieces that glue your outfits together. These are the items you have to have in your closet or dresser in order to wear the trendier or more individualistic pieces you love.
But while these pieces can be basic, they don’t have to be boring. In this post I talked about how to select the most stylish wardrobe essentials in order to create truly interesting and unique outfits from your closet.
Because we all have different lifestyles, personal styles and climate restrictions, you’ll have to determine which essentials are actually, well, essential to you. I’ve divided the spring essentials into several categories. And I do believe we all need clothing and accessories in these categories in order to have the necessary building blocks for a functional wardrobe. But you get to decide which specific items in those categories best fit your lifestyle, body type, personality and season of life.
(By the way, if you need a refresher on dressing for your personal lifestyle or your personality, you might want to check out those posts from a previous style series.)
Spring 2022 Wardrobe Essentials
Most of the photos I’m sharing in today’s post are from my archives. These are mostly from previous springs, so often those items are no longer available. The photos are simply for inspiration, but I did provide links to click through to the original post if you’re interested. And occasionally the items in those looks are indeed available.
Basic but “Lighter” Pants and Jeans
Spring calls for us to lighten up. It’s a great time to try jeans and pants in trending colors, lighter denims, lightweight fabrics, white and fresh prints. Depending on your style preference you might need to refresh your wardrobe with one or more of the following.
White or Natural Wash Jeans
You absolutely can wear white jeans all year, but I especially enjoy pairing them with lighter weight fabrics and more cheerful colors during the spring. That’s why I chose to put mine away for the winter this year. And white jeans look lovely worn with a denim jacket, blazer, utility jacket, trench coat or lightweight cardigan. They’re so versatile.
In this video that I posted last spring, I shared How to Wear White Jeans Like a Boss. Many of the products featured and linked in that video are no longer available, but the style tips are definitely worth checking out.
Remember jeans are definitely going straighter and looser these days. But if you still prefer to wear skinny jeans, I can highly recommend Talbots’ white denim jeggings. They also come in curvy fit, and that’s what I wear. And in both of those fits, the denim jeggings come in petite, misses and plus sizes. I didn’t do much to style my white denim jeggings below because this was just a try-on session that I shared last week. But these are very comfortable jeans with a nice thick denim.
Below I’m showing the Talbots Slim Ankle jeans. They’re great, too, especially if you want a slim silhouette, but not skinny jeans. I’m also wearing an 8 in these jeans, true to size.
And below I’m wearing the full length straight leg jeans in white from Talbots. These also fit true to size, but I am wearing the curvy.
If you want something a little more on trend and/or you already have the more classic silhouettes, I’d suggest purchasing a pair of white denim with a more straight, cropped leg or even a demi boot or cropped flare leg. These are definitely more modern. I’ve fallen in love with these Mother the Hustler High Waist Fray Hem Ankle Bootcut Jeans. Because they are such a modern cut and I think they’re actually quite flattering, I have a feeling these will be my white jeans of choice this spring and summer.
But this year natural colored jeans are really trending. While we’ll continue to see lots of white jeans and they’re perfectly stylish, we’ll also see a larger variety of natural or ivory or beige jeans. I recently tried the Modern Ankle Jeans in natural from Talbots. While I actually love this silhouette and the way these jeans fit, they do run a little snugger than the other Talbots styles I’ve shown above. I’m still wearing my usual size 8 below, but I’m going to need to get a few pounds off (which I’m working really hard at!) in order to wear these jeans comfortably.
I’ve collected several other white jeans at various price points and in different styles in the shopping widget below. In fact, the Talbots jeans mentioned above are not included in the shopping widget, but you can shop them through the links above. Remember, when you shop through my links I potentially earn a commission on your purchases, but at no additional cost to you. Thank you for shopping through my link and supporting the work I do here. I appreciate you.
Also, always remember that many of the products featured in these widgets come in other colors. In fact, one of them showed up blue, but they do have that jean in white, too. And sale prices do not always reflect accurately. Bottom line? If you’re at all interested, click through for more information and options and the correct price.
Blue Jeans
Since I’ve moved north I find myself continuing to wear jeans into the spring and summer. Of course, maybe that’s also because I’m getting older. We 50+ gals absolutely can wear shorts and skirts, but I find myself wanting to keep my legs covered more than I used to. Anyone???
Anyhow, I do think it’s nice to reach for lighter weight jeans and perhaps some with a looser fit and maybe a cropped length. They’re just cooler and more “spring like.”
This year, even more than last, straight cropped and ankle length jeans are trending hot, hot, hot. In fact, while I and every other influencer I know has been assuring you that you can still wear your skinny jeans if you wish, I do think we are nearing the day when those skinnies are going to start looking very dated. I’m just calling it like I see it. And let’s face it, straight leg jeans are not a fad. Straight legs are the roots of blue jeans. They’re the most authentic silhouette there is, besides the bootcut, which never really goes out of style either.
Now the ankle or crop lengths we’re enjoying right now may not be around forever. But this spring and summer you’re going to see a lot of these shorter lengths. And I think they’re so much fresher and seasonally appropriate for these warm months. They’re easy to wear, too, because you can wear a full range of footwear with them, from sandals to sneakers to wedges to loafers to mules to ballet flats, and on and on and on.
So if you haven’t taken the plunge and tried the straight leg ankle or crop length (really the same thing) jeans yet, I humbly suggest you do so this spring. And the straight leg ankle jeans above are such a great starter pair. They’re reasonably priced, the shipping and returns are free and easy, they feature the trending dark wash that is so versatile, they appear to be fully stocked and that raw hem makes the jeans easy to adjust to any height. I actually cut almost 1″ off mine. And I know several petite bloggers who consistently cut off their misses size jeans to make them work for them. You want your ankle length jeans to hit just at or above the ankle bone.
Of course, if you really want to go modern, you might want to try the even trendier demi boot or cropped flare leg jeans. I don’t own any of these except the white ones I shared in the section above. But I will definitely be sharing lots of tips for styling straight leg and demi boot ankle length jeans this spring and summer. So stick with me and you will be wearing these modern silhouettes with confidence and great style.
Finally, I think spring and summer are also a nice time to wear grey or light black jeans, especially if either of those colors works well with your chosen neutrals or signature colors. Below I styled my grey jeans for winter, but I’ll soon be sharing them in spring styles, too. Notice these grey jeans are “slim ankle jeans,” which are a great option if you don’t want to go too wide in the leg, but you’re willing to break away from skinny jeans.
I’ve filled the shopping widget below with blue and grey jeans in a variety of silhouettes and price points. Keep in mind that when shopping for jeans you want to consider your preferable rise for your body proportions.
Lightweight Cotton (or blend) Pants
Depending on your lifestyle and fashion aesthetic, you may also want to have a pair or two of lightweight cotton pants in your closet. I find myself wearing these more and more into the summer months, too, as I get older. They’re slowly but surely replacing my shorts as my go-to choice for hot weather. That’s why I want very lightweight, breathable fabrics in several versatile shades, but usually my preferred neutrals.
I think you’ll definitely want cotton pants in your selected neutral colors (one or more of black, navy, brown, grey, olive, or tan), but you may want a pair or two in your signature colors as well (red, pink, green, yellow, blue, etc.)
This year, lightweight cotton pants are trending in a straighter or full leg and a cropped length. You could also purchase your pants in a relaxed leg and full length and then roll the cuffs up a couple of times if you’d like.
Cool but Dressier Slacks
I also think it’s a good idea to have at least one pair of dressier pants for spring. They could be white, black, off-white, grey or navy, if you want a pair in a pretty neutral that will have versatility. But you could also select a pair of dressier but lightweight slacks in one of your signature colors, such as red or blue.
Again, you can still wear the slimmer cut pants, but wider legs are trending. And ankle length is fashionable and appropriate in these slightly dressier pants as well.
JACKETS FOR SPRING
You’re bound to need a jacket now and again in the spring. But it’s time to put away the winter coats and cardigans and grab a jacket or cardi of a lighter weight fabric. Depending on your personal style you may choose one or more of the following to keep in your closet, ready to pair with so many things.
Denim Jacket
I love my classic Levi’s Ex-Boyfriend Trucker Jacket, but there are definitely other options if you have a different style aesthetic. Just keep in mind that the more bells and whistles a garment has, the less timeless it will be.
Blazer
A tailored blazer is a good idea anytime, especially if you prefer a classic or elegant style aesthetic. But spring is a good time to shift to either a pretty navy blazer, an ivory jacket or one in a new, springy shade.
As I looked back at last year’s Spring Wardrobe Essentials post I noticed that I remarked that I wasn’t wearing my blazers as much because of the stay-at-home situation with the pandemic. But as things have opened up this past year and we’ve gotten out more, I’ve returned to wearing blazers very frequently.
Blazers really have become my go-to jacket of choice, even over my denim jacket. Most blazers are even more comfortable than my denim jacket and they add something special to every outfit.
Because blazers have really become a signature piece in my wardrobe and I wear them very frequently, I pay more and invest in quality jackets that feel and look great. I have learned that there is a true difference in quality of blazers. But if you don’t think you’ll wear your blazer as much as I do, I’d suggest checking out some of the more economical options in the shopping widget below. I recently got this lovely grey blazer from LilySilk and it is amazing at this price. It’s also available in black and navy.
Trench Coat or Jacket
Having lived in the south where we generally went straight from cold to blazing hot in the spring, I had never owned a trench coat until a few years ago. But even in Arizona, I wore it more than I had expected. And here in Ohio I wear one quite frequently. In fact, I wore my full length trench to church this past Sunday.
I now have a full length pink trench (similar at Talbots now), a full length traditional khaki and three shorter trenches. Yeah, that’s a bit much. But that’s kind of how it goes as a style blogger. I think if I had to pick just one I’d go with the full length traditional. But a close second would be my black shorter trench (similar).
I’m including macs in this category, too. A mac coat generically refers to a plain, button-down coat that protects from wind, chill and/or rain, while a trench coat features military-inspired details including a thick waist belt, shoulder and wrist straps, and large lapels.
When shopping for a trench or mac coat, keep in mind that not all of them are rain coats. So if you want one that is water repellant or waterproof, be sure to look for those features in the item description. The coats I’m sharing in the shopping widget below come in several different colors, so be sure to click through for more color options.
I do think it is smart to have a few other completer pieces in your wardrobe for spring, but I’ll be sharing those in a designated Spring Completer Pieces post soon.
LIGHTWEIGHT TOPS & BLOUSES
Yay! It’s finally time to lighten up. Even if you layer up, you can lighten up the fabric, the prints and the colors of your tops. Depending on your style aesthetic you may need one or more of the following to round out the essentials in your wardrobe.
Crisp White Shirt
Last spring I produced a YouTube video about wearing button up shirts. While the trend this year is to wear the oversized versions of this classic closet staple, you absolutely will look stylish in the more tailored version, too. Below I’m wearing the Perfect Shirt from Talbots.
I’d say this is probably more indicative of the wardrobe essential we’re talking about here. But if your style aesthetic leans more toward the casual or bohemian, you may do quite well to keep an oversized shirt in your closet for several years. And while I say we need a “crisp white shirt,” you won’t go wrong with a shirt in a classic color or pattern. I recently picked up the light blue oversized shirt below.
Don’t forget, you can also choose between cotton or no-iron blends. And linen is another nice option. I tend to wear my linen more in summer, but it’s fine to start wearing it as soon as things warm up in your neck of the woods.
This year I’ve noticed that button up shirts made in soft gauze fabric are really trending. They may not be as classic as cotton poplin, but they’re definitely current and comfy. I’ve rounded up several great options for you below. I’m including a few shirts with short sleeves and various neck details, too.
Chambray Shirt
I really enjoy having a chambray shirt in my closet year-round, but especially during the spring. It looks so classic and fresh with white jeans, khaki pants and other wardrobe essentials. While I’m wearing mine as a jacket below, I generally wear it as a shirt.
I have several chambray shirts at this point, but I especially like my chambray or denim shirt from Talbots. This one is similar. I prefer a classic button up chambray shirt for its versatility, but I’ve included other types of chambray shirts in the widget below because I know some of you have different style aesthetics from mine.
Short Sleeve T-Shirts
I think one of the biggest mistakes I made for years was not having solid white and black tees on hand. A basic, solid t-shirt is definitely a must-have if you want to create outfits this spring and summer. They make all those layering pieces so much more versatile.
I suggest you have at least a couple of solid tees in colors and necklines that flatter you. Then if you want to add a print or two, that’s up to you. But for me, a white and black tee have become absolutely necessities.
Because spring is often a little chilly, I do suggest having some long or 3/4 length sleeve tees in your arsenal, too. It’s not that easy to find these, but my favorite is the cotton bateau neck tee at Talbots.
Three-quarter length sleeves are especially flattering because they expose the wrist bones, which creates a slenderizing look. Again, I think it’s a good idea to have at least a couple of these in your wardrobe, maybe one in a neutral and the other in a fun stripe or polka dot.
I feel like I’m always on the quest to find the perfect solid tees. And I know that what works for one woman doesn’t always appeal to another. For instance, I kind of like the little front pockets some tees have on them, but if you are bustier than me you may not like that feature at all. And while I prefer a v-neck, some of you like scoop or crew necks better. So I’ve filled the shopping widget below with a wide variety of tees in different prices, silhouettes (fitted and boxier), necklines and even sleeve lengths.
Last Spring I wrote a white T-Shirt review post in which I reviewed a dozen or so short sleeve white tees. Would that be helpful this year, too? And if so, do you have specific brands you would like for me to include for comparison? Please let me know in the comments below.
SIMPLE DRESS
I think it’s so important to have a simple but pretty dress in your closet for spring and summer. If you can find an all-purpose dress – one with clean lines, an attractive silhouette and not too much fuss – you’ll be able to wear this one dress for weddings, funerals, showers and church.
What will make it a wardrobe essential? We need a dress that is functional, versatile and easy to wear. One that looks good with a jacket or trench coat over it, too, since the weather fluctuates. That’s why I say this needs to be a simple dress, one that is not fussy or restricted to certain types of events.
I recently purchased this bold floral print dress (also in plus sizes) and this solid green wrap dress (available in other colors and prints, too), and I’ll be featuring them in an upcoming blog post. Here are a few to consider if you need a new spring dress.
In the past I’ve included spring accessory essentials in this post. But it’s already sooo long! Ha! So I’ll be publishing a separate Spring Accessory Essentials post later next week. It will include handbags, belts, shoes, scarves, etc. Plus, I have a Spring Completer Pieces post coming up with additional jackets and cardigans.
Which of these spring wardrobe essential pieces do you already own? Which will you need to refresh (maybe your white t-shirt)? And which can you pass on because it just doesn’t really fit into your personal wardrobe? I’d love to hear from you today.

Blessed for My Day
Indeed God does comfort us when we are downcast or broken. But then we are to turn around and use that same comfort to help others through similar situations. There are hurts you have endured that I have never experienced. And I have undoubtedly gone through trials you have not yet endured. We have unique opportunities to minister to those around us because of our experiences.
Early in our marriage, my husband incurred some surprising health problems that landed him in the hospital multiple times. I had never sat beside someone I love in the hospital before. But because God walked us through that difficult season I am more equipped to empathize with other wives when their husbands are ill or hurting.
In what unique way could you offer comfort to someone today?
…who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. ~ 2 Corinthians 1:4
Good morning Kay! It’s a very rainy day in GA and we have rain in the forecast thru Thursday then it will return on Sunday. Last year I took a picture of my backside in the mirror while wearing a pair of white jeans. Oh my word – what I saw was not a pretty site. I have a thick bottom, which the white jeans only make look even thicker, so I realized they are not something I should wear. So, I want to add one pair of light colored pants/jeans, such as pink (one of my signature colors), to my closet. I have a good white and black tee. I would like to add one short sleeve tee with polka dots in pink, like the one you shared from Talbots. I like that the sleeves are just a little longer and it looks like the fabric is a little thicker. I do not like tops that are see through. Where we live, the summers are very hot and humid, so the only time I need a jacket is if we are going to be in a cold building. The only other item I’d like to add to my spring wardrobe is a pair of colored or designed sneakers or flats in one of my signature colors. Another fabulous post, including the BFMD! Enjoy your day!
Great post, Kay! I am on Pinterest so I pinned some of your ideas on my Style board. Thank you. You have great suggestions for our wardrobes.
Thanks also for the lesson. I believe the Lord will use the things He has allowed in our lives to encourage and to comfort others in similar situations.
Have a blessed day!
Suzanne
What size do you wear in the t-shirt?
I think I’m between sizes. Thank you so much
Laurie
I got a medium in the black and white polka dot. In the Banana Republic tee I wear a small.
Hi Kay!
I just love your blog and following you on Instagram!
I have a question re FWFL. Do you use a coach that is around your same age/stage in life? I am almost 50, seriously in peri-menopause and feel as though I need someone who will understand what my body is going through. I’ve done FWFL in the past, but honestly did not have great results. In fact, I gained 10 pounds. Yikes! I’m feeling as though I’d like to give it another try, but perhaps with a different coach. Would love your advice. Thanks!
Hi Susan, I’m part of the VIP program now so I don’t have one particular coach. In VIP you get to have private video conference calls occasionally with one of the head coaches. I had never done that before, but it was so worthwhile. The coach I talked to was not near my age, but she seemed very knowledgeable about nutrition and fitness. I felt comfortable with her. I’m not sure when you did the program, but they have made quite a few changes to it over the past year or so. One of the things she reminded me yesterday is that it’s really a nutrition based program with exercises available instead of an exercise program with nutrition help available. In other words, what you eat is really the key. And as long as I stick to the nutrition plan – and I had really let that go – I do indeed stay in my goal weight and size. It’s when I fudge on the nutrition plan that I mess up, even though I’m diligent about the workouts. So she shifted my macros some the other day, too. I’m actually going to be eating more. We’ll see how that goes!
I’m not sure if that answer helped any. As far as menopause, I did find that the intermittent fasting helped a lot with that. Also minimizing gluten has helped me. I don’t abstain from gluten totally, but I’ve cut way back.
This is the time of year when it’s cold at 35 at night one week and 72 in the daytime like today with sunshine the next week. So, I bounce from jacket to just shirt. I thinking we will get an early spring becausewildflowers are already popping up everywhere, I’m inspired by their colors. Yellows, periwinkle, pretty pinks. I want a shirt or Tee in every color. Come on Spring. Great informative post and good advise on having cotton pants, I wear drawstring cotton pants a lot in summer.
Thank you for another helpful post! I appreciate the recommendations and am especially interested in the white poplin top from Talbot’s.
Great post, Kay! I lost my best friend when we were in our 30’s. The ones who ministered to me the most were those who had lost dear friends. And over the years I have been given the opportunity to do the same.
Oh what a tragic but beautiful example of how God redeems our losses. Thanks so much for sharing.
Another great post Kay.
I wish I could wear a little shorter shorts but because my legs are on the thin side and I am getting older, my legs have crepe. I do not feel comfortable wearing shorts that are even 5-6” above my knee. I do not know how to “fix” crepe?
Blessings,
I know exactly what you mean Holly. I have the same problem. I don’t let it bother me most of the time, but it does cause me to choose pants over shorts more often. Thanks for reading. 😊
Korres makes a crepe repair cream available through HSN and Gold Bond has come out with one as well. I notice improvement with both. Self tanner hides a multitude of sins as well.
I think I’ll try the one by Gold Bond. I really like their products. Thanks Mary.
Thank you Mary….I’m going to try some of these!
I have had so much difficulty in my life-mother leaving when I was five, narcissistic controlling people gaslighting me, death of children in the family (nephew and niece), painful estrangements, cancer, rare disease… The Lord has helped me through all of it. It makes the thought of Heaven so much sweeter. I am surprised that younger women in the church don’t seek older women out for advise.
Praise the Lord for His constant presence and help. Thanks for sharing Karin.
What a great BFMD! This is a very good reference of spring essentials that we can adjust accordingly. Oh, I purchased the yellow handbag at Target today, and I have to say WOW! It is so buttery soft, has plenty of room while not being overly big. Thank you so much for sharing it with us! I know that you will be just great doing the Zoom presentation for the UGA students. You’ve got this!
Ahh thanks so much Ginger. And I’m so pleased that you like the bag. I do too!
Thank you, Kay! A perfect reminder of the type of pieces to focus on that will give us versatile wardrobes for the new season!! Looking forward to future posts for the accessories and completer pieces!! BTW, is there any way you could put this in a “ list form” that could be printed easily for shopping reference and closet planning? Thanks for all you do and for your inspiration!!
Hi Sheri. Yes, it’s in a list. If you are an email subscriber you can access it in the Subscriber Freebies through the top menu bar.
Thanks Kay!! I’m going to check that out right away!!
Sheri
Oops, I don’t remember the password!!! Let me know how I can get that, please. I am already a subscriber 🙂 Thanks, Kay!
It’s always at the bottom of your emails 😉
Perfect!! Thank you!!
What an informative post and I can see I really need to upgrade… or should I say UPDATE my wardrobe. I am like you and am starting to enjoy wearing longer jeans. My question is… do you have a suggestion of what length of crop pants are best for my “pear” shape body? I’m struggling with what length to order. I loved BFMD and I want to remember to pay it forward.
Hi Sandy. Your cropped pants should simply hit at the narrow part of your ankle or just above. You don’t want anything so short that it hits at the wider part of your calf. Hope that helps. I’d say get them down to ankle length.
Thank you for all the great ideas on how to pull myself together, so I don’t look frumpy. I live in Panama City, Florida and work in a casual office, but can’t wear jeans, so your ideas are wonderful. In the summer, I wear skirts almost every day, so any suggestions you can pass on will be appreciated.
Your presentation will be great! Go Dawgs!
Thanks so much Patrise. I’ll be sharing a pretty skirt in next weeks video. 😉
I’m new to your blog and YouTube channel. I am enjoying your information and learning a lot. I am a 59 year old wife,
mother to two grown children, soon to be a mother-in-law to an amazing young man (June) and work full-time as Administrative Assistant/Bookkeeper at an elementary school. I have lost almost 50 pounds since August and have about 25 or so more to go to reach my goal. I am in search of transition pieces that are economical as I work toward my goal. I’ve always been a bargain shopper; finding the classic look I enjoy with a touch of trending items at better prices.
Wonderful! Bargain shopping takes a real eye. Thanks so much for saying hello!
Hi, I appreciate your adventurous spirit in trying new shapes/styles. Just like it took a while for people to warm up to skinny jeans it will be the same with looser fits. If not styled correctly, in skinny jeans I could look like an apple with a head, arms and legs. Our spring break is in a couple of weeks and since I’ll have been fully vaccinated by then I plan on doing a shopping trip to figure out what pant shape works for me. Thanks for your inspiration.
Great idea. It really does take trying on lots of jeans! Thanks for sharing. 😊
Like many mature ladies, I have issues with how my bare legs look in the summer. I only wear shorts at home. Are cropped pants (not capris) still in style? I’ve been eyeing the perfect crops at Talbots.
Thank you for your help.
Hi Jennifer. Yes many women do prefer not to bare their legs as we age. Cropped pants are very much in style. But as you implied I would stay away from the Capri length. Capris are generally less flattering and more aging. But cropped pants can look fresh and current.
I love your style. I love clothes, shoes and purses. I just retired last September and I don’t need as many clothes now, however I still love to shop. I live in Lexington, Ky. And you never know what to wear in the spring. I really enjoy your ideas.
Thanks so much for sharing Gina. I’m glad you’re enjoying the blog.
Hi Kay. I have been following your blog for several months and have even gotten my 84 yo mom to subscribe !
I have similar style to yours (could it because I live in ATL?)) but I don’t wear pants due to religious reasons.
Are there any knee length white denim or khaki skirts out there this season ? I love maxi length skirts/dresses as well but as a petite women they sometime overwhelm my build. I look best in an a-line or pencil style skirt.
Please keep up the good work! I really enjoy your daily posts!!
Hi Paula. Thanks so much for sharing and telling me a little about yourself. I love that. It’s so helpful to me. I did notice this darling daisy skirt at JJill https://rstyle.me/+T7HDjfHdjhySSAvZY3gQng I got this maxi skirt and LOVE it https://rstyle.me/+uoYrOV70rUdWUVeshL1OkA But I also think Talbots has a white denim A-line skirt. https://rstyle.me/cz-n/e5inwichvkf Hope that helps. Thanks so much for subscribing! 😊
Nice post today, Kay. I wear jeans in the Spring but not the summer. I live in Minnesota, but is humid during the Summer months, that doesn’t last very long here. I wear dresses, capris or ankle pants and longer shorts sometimes. I like the straight leg jeans as long as they do not have holes in them and I still wear my skinny jeans sometimes, according to my mood. I have thin legs, so think I can get by with them. I also like small boot cut jeans. Love the green dress. I bought it.
Looks nice on you. Have a blessed day.
Forgot to tell you how much I like blazers on you. Of course, I am a big fan of blazers and wear them a lot too. Now that warm weather is on the way, I can start wearing them more as jackets also.
Thanks for all the great suggestions for spring! Top of my list for spring is replacing my white t-shirt (I should really purchase 2!!). I would welcome a review of white t shirts.
Hey Kay!! This is the most informative wardrobe Essentials post I have ever read. I had Open Heart surgery in January and while I was gone my husband, Bless his Heart, decided I didn’t need all of the tee shirts and tops in my closet. He didn’t throw anything out but he separated everything by style and color. Some tees and tops I haven’t worn in a long time. I really didn’t know what was in there. So, now I can make outfits and get rid of some things that are old or way too big. I did lose over 30 lbs while in the hospital. This gives me a head start on what kind of out fits I would like. Especially the ones you have posted. Thank you for going into detail with your tips on how to wear and lengths, etc. LOVE YOUR BLOG!!!
…..LINDA W. 🌹🌼💚
Hi Kay – what a great post! So chock full of super helpful information. Yes, I would love to see you post a curated collection of white and black tee shirts, and may I suggest that a few of them be a shorter length (20″?) so that if we want to tuck it, there is not so much of it to tuck? Thanks so much!
Hi Kay! Why in the world did panty hose go out of style? Everyones legs look more attractive and shoes and heel much more comfortable when wearing hose. Now it seems taboo so I just wear slacks or jeans and flats. Sure miss my sheer hosiery.
I actually wore hose to church yesterday and will be showing them with a dress in a post next week. You certainly can still wear them. Just choose hose that are very sheer and flesh colored. Or you can wear navy or black hose with coordinating shoes. But you certainly can wear hosiery.
Is the Tory Burch bag you are carrying wearing the white jeans and beach shirt the Maple Leaf color? You did put lots of time into your blog today. Much enjoyed.
Hi Barbara. My bag is actually in the color Devon Sand and it’s no longer available in that bag. This is the only bag I see in that color. https://shopstyle.it/l/bEQE9
Kay, I just love your post! Thank you for your hard work!
I have to tell you that your videos and posts are in my head (in a good way). I’m intentionally searching for specific pieces to add to my wardrobe instead of just emotionally buying with no plan.
Yesterday I tried a dress that was very similar to your green dress above. I found it not flattering as there was too much fabric above the belt. I’m still looking.
I’m an ex-pat working in Eastern Europe, all of the spring trends are here too. However, color is huge!
Hugs, Heather
Thank you so much for letting me know that my content is helpful, Heather. I really appreciate that. It’s very encouraging to me. This is so much more to me than a job. I really want to make a difference for women. 🥰
Kay, this post has been very helpful and I look forward to the seasonal essential clothing posts you bring us.
One of your comments above, you stated that 3/4 tees were difficult to find. I have been very happy with all of the tees from L.L. Bean. Their fabric is a nice weight and hand and they have many beautiful colors and styles to choose from and their prices are reasonable for the quality, I feel.
Thank you for all the work you do to keep us looking our stylish best.
Marge S.
Hi Marge, yes I love my tees from L.L.Bean, too. They are definitely among my favorites. This particular blog post is one I’ve actually republished after updating it each year, so many of the comments are from long ago. I probably should look through them! Ha! But I will definitely be including the LLBean tees in my t-shirt review this year as they are some of my favs too. Thanks for sharing 🥰
Great post…I agree with one of the previous comments, it is the best “essential” list I’ve seen. Some others are too utilitarian, “black pant, white shirt, black this, white that”. But your posts and the tools you provide allow us to customize our wardrobe to meet our personal needs. You do such a good job. As far as what I’m adding this Spring…for me, that’s the question of the hour! As I transition to retirement, my needs are plentiful and far exceed my budget. So far, I have purchased an Ann Taylor trench coat you previously featured, two Talbots sweater in pretty colors, and a gorgeous and I mean gorgeous Lily Silk blouse that you also featured. I don’t know how you do it all, but keep up the good work.
Hi Kay,
I’m relatively new to your blog – just subscribed at the beginning of this year. I went back and looked at your White T Review post but I would love to see an updated one. For ladies who have a large chest or large tummy area, white t shirts are hard to pull off because they show your lumps and bumps easily if they are too thin. Would love to see advice on a perfect coverage tee without too much fabric or too heavy of a fabric.
I also from another reader above that ‘capri length’ pants are out. Hoping to see maybe a what-not-to-wear post for styles that help to age you more than they should.
Loving your daily emails!
Hi Kay,
You have such a nice shape. One of your followers mentioned that you are in FWFL? What is that? I love your common sense approach to style. I am 75 and live in Northern California . I have always followed fair eating habits, an exercise routine and good rest. I am a Christian and read His word. Blessings in your work!
Julie
Hi Julie. FWTFL is a wonderful program that helps you achieve and maintain a healthy weight and muscle mass through intermittent fasting carb balancing (NOT a low carb or keto diet), consistent weight lifting and cardio and a balanced diet. They provide accountability, great daily workouts on their app or online, ongoing education and incentive. I’ve been in the program for four years and really love it.
