Crop Chinos – Wear Now & Later

Gals, there’s no mistaking it. Pant silhouettes are definitely changing. While skinny jeans are still popular and beautifully appropriate, the wider leg, higher rise, more relaxed fit and cropped length pants definitely look more “of the moment.” So today I’m doing my part to help “adjust our eyes” by styling my new crop chinos for a wear-now look.

Wear Now Wear Later Crop Chinos

And over the next two days I’ll be showing you ways to wear these same crop chinos a little later and a lot later, as we transition into spring and then summer.

Keep in mind, I’m still learning how to style these newer silhouettes, too. And I really think the old adage is true when it comes to adapting to new styles: beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In other words, we’ve got to be open minded as we allow our “fashion sense” to adjust to newer styles. We have to choose not to look at them critically, but be appreciative of the bonuses they give us.

For instance, I love the new more relaxed legs in pants. They may not look as slimming at first, but as we get used to them I think that will change. And there’s no mistaking the comfort. Plus, as someone who doesn’t plan on wearing shorts as much as I used to, I think the fuller legs will be cooler, allowing for a little air circulation.

Wear Now Wear Later Crop Chinos

I chose to style these particular patch pocket crop chinos for now and later because they’re constructed from a 98% cotton and 2% Spandex midweight fabric with a bit of heft. So they’re heavy enough for some of my readers to begin wearing now if you choose the right footwear, top and outerwear.

Crop Chinos

Kudos to Talbots for coming out with this particular color in the patch pocket crop chinos. It’s such a “now” color. I’ve seen similar shades at places like Madewell, J.Crew, Banana Republic and Everlane. (Click on those links to see examples of similar pants in this color family.) Actually, I’m not a fan of wearing this color close to my face, but I like it in pants. Then I can top it with black, chambray blue, white, brown or cream close to my face.

Crop Chinos

But these pants also come in several other interesting shades, such as port wine, olive green and indigo blue.

So for now I like topping these pants with a black turtleneck. I tucked my turtleneck in because I think the proportions are better that way. But you would just need to play around with tucking or not tucking on your individual body proportions. Remember, you won’t be able to wear these cropped length pants exactly the same way you’ve worn your full length or even ankle length pants. The proportions are different, and you’ll need to adjust accordingly.

Don’t assume you can’t tuck and belt your pants. Play around with it a bit. I always create a loose tuck and sometimes tuck only the front. And if you wear a completer piece, like I’ve done here, no one will actually see your waist (and any muffin top!) anyhow.

Hobo Bag
Sock booties

Sock booties are the perfect “now” shoe choice for crop chinos because they keep the ankle looking trim and the hem comes just to the top of the boot shaft. My faux suede booties are still available for a sweet price, and also come in black and red.

Jewelry

I have one final and fairly important style tip to offer. Because these pants are high waisted and I’m wearing a belt, I raised this adjustable length tiger’s eye pendant necklace to a higher setting. Otherwise, it would hit just above the belt and draw your focus downward. To raise the focus up to the face, wear a necklace at mid-breast or above.

Are your eyes adjusting yet? Hahaha! It may take a while, granted. But I think eventually we’re going to wear these fuller leg cropped pants like pros. I’m looking forward to sharing two more style options for these crop chinos with you tomorrow and Thursday. So be sure to check back in for the “wear later” looks.

Blessed for My Day

Even when we are walking through difficult circumstances, we can trust that God’s plans for us are good. He is not trying to do us in or wear us out or punish us. He may, indeed, be teaching us to lean on Him more, to respond more like Christ and to live more aware of His presence, but He is not cruel.

That’s why you can also trust that God is not trying to see what you’re made of, see how strong you or even make you stronger. Instead, scripture teaches us that in our difficulties, God wants us to recognize how much we need Him. The only muscle He may be trying to strengthen is your faith. But all in all, He is inviting you to rest in Him and allow Him to prove His love for you with every step.

For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. ~ Jeremiah 29:11-13

  1. The BfMD is wonderful and I am saving it to read again and again. Kay, you rock this outfit! On my screen, the sweater and vest look navy blue which is the colour I wear in place of black. I can’t wait to see how you style these pants next. Well done!

  2. Perfect BFMD! Kay, this is a very pretty outfit on you. I appreciate the reminder that we should adjust the length of our necklace when wearing high waisted pants when we tuck in our top. And I’ll have to remember to modify the style top I pair with them. So, while I like the cropped wider leg pants, my concern is that they will bag below my backside, which I’m not crazy about. But maybe with the whole leg being full, that won’t be an issue. Maybe I can find an economical pair in a pastel color to try. I’m glad that you took yesterday to reset! That’s something all of us need to do more often. I hope that you have a fabulous day!

    1. Thanks so much for reading and sharing your thoughts, Ginger. I think the pants are pretty much like any others in that you have to look for ones that fit you well. We definitely don’t want saggy bottoms!

  3. Your email came just in time – I took my chinos out of the bag of clothing that I have been collecting to give away. I have every thing you have in your picture. I started trying different combinations of tops, sweaters, and jackets and was amazed at what I was able to put together. I am probably one of your older subscribers, almost 75, but I love what you have done with these pants. . I just signed up for your emails last week – perfect timing I would say!

    1. Great to hear, Tina. Welcome to Dressed for My Day! I’m so glad you subscribed and that you’re enjoying the blog. You’ll see two more great looks with those chinos tomorrow and Thursday. The best is yet to come!

  4. I like them but the trouser look is not for me. I’m 77 so I remember this same style way back when. I had a navy/white striped pair in seersucker fabric and a red and white dotted Swiss. I live on the coast so these fabrics are so cool when it’s really hot. I would also like to see them with a drWstring. What’s goes will come back but not always in the exact form.
This outfit just suits you because you have such a great figure. I’m too short waisted to do much tucking in.
