Madewell Spring Try-On Session

I’m not sure I’ve ever even posted my fitting room escapades from Madewell before. In the past I’ve been too frustrated trying to find the jeans that fit me to post my findings. But this time I purposefully visited Madewell when it was less busy so that I could chill a little and work through the necessary fits and sizes.

My daughter is a manager at Madewell, and she kind of talked me through the different fits a little. Plus, she assured me that the jeans, which are generally constructed from a thick denim, will indeed stretch out some with wear and turn into custom fitted jeans.

Granted, the fashions at Madewell are definitely more contemporary or even edgy than some of the other brands I frequently feature here at Dressed for My Day. And I’d even go so far as to say that some of them are a little too young-looking for my personal taste. But I find that mixing in a few pieces from youthful brands like Madewell is a great way to keep my more “mature” wardrobe looking fresh and modern.

Madewell Distinctions

Madewell ships for free to all Madewell Insiders. And you can become an Insider absolutely free. It’s simply a matter of providing your email, name, birth date and maybe a few other pieces of information. Let’s see what I found!

Spring Fashions from Madewell

The hardest part of shopping at Madewell seems to be finding the right fit in denim. But you can check out this denim fit guide for assistance in seeing how the different rises, lengths and fits will look on your body shape.

The Perfect Vintage Jean in Tile White: Raw-Hem Edition // Let’s start with a winner. These white jeans are hands down some of the best I’ve tried on. They’re a nice thickness, preventing any see-through issues. And they just fit nicely on my hourglass shape. The perfect vintage jeans are constructed from 93% cotton/5% poly/2% elastane denim, and feature a high rise and tapered legs. I absolutely would have bought these if I hadn’t already purchased a pair for the year. And actually, I’m checking to see if those still have the tags on them because, you know…these are great jeans.

Try to ignore the writing sprawled across my chest in many of these photos. Hahaha! Madewell has script on their mirrors that sometimes transfers to your image. It’s a little annoying, but it’s just an illusion, not part of the clothing.

Jensen Sweater Tank Top // I’m wearing the Jensen Sweater Tank Top in frosted sage. This is a size small and it fits well. I found that for the most part, at least in the looser fitting tops, I required a small. This sweater tank would require a special bra, but it’s a great top if you like showing off your shoulders and arms. It’s also available in etruscan clay, a burnished red.

Drapey Mockneck Top // I’m pretty sure I’m wearing this Drapey Mockneck Top in a medium because that’s the size I usually pick up in close fitting tops like this. So I’d say it’s true to size. It’s a viscose/elastane top with a slight turtleneck and a fitted silhouette.

Marled Bradley Cardigan Sweater // This cardigan is made from a cotton blend for a very soft, luxurious drape. I’m wearing a small and it fits nicely. In fact, there’s lots of stretch in the body and the sleeves, so you could probably wear it easily over a bulkier or long sleeve top, too. But I think it tops something like this thin turtleneck best.

Striped Midi Shirtdress // I loved the idea of this Striped Midi Shirtdress, but it didn’t work for me in reality, at least not in the medium I would have thought I’d wear. It has a detached cotton slip that provides modesty and a clean appearance, but the slip didn’t help the dress to fit at all. Instead, I found it to be very snug across the chest, and I’m not even bosomy at all. It’s a beautiful, clip dot cotton dress, so if you’re interested just be sure to size up at least a size from your normal largest size. The dress has a slight empire waistline. Oh, and this size was snug in the arms on me, too. Honestly, it just runs really small.

Tomboy V-Neck Tank Top // I tried this Tomboy V-Neck Tank Top because many of us are always in search of the perfect tank to pair with cardigans, jackets, etc. I like this one fair enough, but it is a bit low. It’s available in eight colors. I’m wearing a small. A medium would definitely be too large in the arm holes. I tucked it in below so you could see the waist of the jeans I’m sharing.

The Momjean in Downey Wash // Above I’m wearing the The Momjean in Downey Wash in a size 30. These 100% cotton rigid denim jeans felt great in this size, but I knew they were too large. If these jeans are amazingly comfortable when you first buy them, they’re too big! They don’t have stretch in the fabric, but they will grow a little with wear. And the idea is that they’re supposed to grow to shape your body perfectly.

Bobble Cardigan Sweater// I’m wearing a small in the Bobble Cardigan Sweater and it fits nicely. This is a loose fitting cardigan with no button closure. It’s also available in a light grey. I love a soft cotton cardigan like this for spring and summer occasions when you need something to fight of the chill in the air.

Floral Embroidered Smocked-Neck Raglan Top// This cotton shirt features a smocked neckline and raglan sleeves. I’m wearing a small and it fits nicely. The Floral Embroidered Smocked-Neck Raglan Top is also available in black.

In the picture above and the one below, I’d changed to the size 29 in the Momjean. While they definitely fit better in the waist and hips, I couldn’t get them to not have that annoying little flap in the front. Can you see what I’m referring to? Abigail said that’s a pretty common problem with this particular jean style. Maybe it works better for women with a long torso.

Hillview Cardigan Sweater // The Hillview Cardigan Sweater is also available in antique cream, but I’m wearing the wisteria in a small. This sweater can easily be worn over another shirt and unbuttoned or as a top. I’d probably just wear a very lightweight cami with it.

Next up I put on another Tomboy V-Neck Tank Top, this time in the sundried wheat. I’m still wearing a small.

Slim Wide-Leg Jeans in Lunar // I first tried these jeans on in the 30, and again they felt great. Too great. Hahaha! So again I switched to the 29, which is snug, but I know they will grow with me. Basically if you can just fasten the jeans, that’s the size you need. I’ve tucked the shirt in below just so you can see where they hit…right at the navel.

I like that these “wide-leg” jeans are not so wide as to look like what many of us knew as gauchos. Ha! They’re really a slim fit jean, but with room in the legs. Also, they’re ankle length.

By the way, most Madewell clothing comes in petite, regular and tall sizes. And many styles comes in plus sizes as well.

And here are the Slim Wide-Leg Jeans in Lunar with the Hillview Cardigan Sweater. I love this silhouette. I know it’s boxy, but that’s very modern.

Embroidered Eyelet Ruffle-Neck Keyhole Top // This ultra feminine shirt also comes in true black and lighthouse white, but I’m wearing enamel red. I’m wearing a small, but it’s just a tad tight in the arms, so I’d size up.

The Carey Mule in Leather// Marked down and get another 20% off with code LIKEALION. These mules are comfortable and run true to size. They’re also available in black.

Banded-Sleeve Popover Shirt in Rainbow Stripe // I’m wearing this popover shirt below in a medium. That should give you a good idea of the difference in sizes. It’s definitely too big, but I never bothered to get the small to try on. But I do love this multi color striped popover. It’s cool, roomy and easy to wear with so many thing.

The Perfect Vintage Jean in Fitzgerald Wash // I’m wearing these zero stretch jeans in a size 29. I thought about buying them, but when I went back to get them they were no longer available in my size.

Embroidered Sleeve Pop-Over Top // I love this summery looking Embroidered Sleeve Pop-Over Top. Not only is it pretty and feminine, but it’s soft and easy to wear. I had no trouble getting it on and off in a size small.

Drapey Track Trousers // These 88% viscose/12% polyamide Drapey Track Trousers run true to size; I’m wearing a medium. My daughter Abigail has some and says she wears them frequently. They’re extremely comfortable and versatile.

Tidal Shirt // This drapey button up shirt is constructed from a thin, gauzy cotton. It’s soft and easy to wear. I definitely prefer it gently tucked in, at least in the front, but you can wear it untucked of course. I’m wearing a small.

Silk Camp Shirt // I’m wearing a small in this Silk Camp Shirt and it’s still plenty roomy.

Paulson Sweater Tee // I’m wearing a small in the Paulson Sweater Tee. This v-neck sweater is made of a cotton blend and features a slightly tapered boxy fit and relaxed drop shoulders. It’s a very soft sweater with a nubby texture. It feels rich and high quality.

Classic Straight Jeans in Meadowland Wash // Again I tried on the wrong size in these Classic Straight Jeans in Meadowland Wash. This is the size 30, but see how roomy they are. With wear my daughter assures me they’d be even bigger. So I later sized down to the 29. Those are shown below.

Dip-Dye Setlist Boxy Tee // I’m wearing this Dip-Dye Setlist Boxy Tee in a size small. It’s 100% cotton and very soft.

Beachmont Jacket // This viscose and cotton Beachmont Jacket has a cropped, boxy fit and I’m wearing a size small. It’s also available in a pale, icy pink.
