Autumn came much earlier to Cincinnati this year than it did last year. And it seems to have been bolder in color and cooler, too. So James and I have been taking advantage of every sunny day to get out and take in all the fall color. Last Saturday we meandered over to Oxford, Ohio, home of Miami University. So today I thought I’d share with you the autumn day trip outfit I actually wore on that beautiful outing.
If you’re a regular here and frequently check out my posts, you’ll quickly recognize that this outfit is made up of absolutely nothing new. Ha! Well, not brand new anyhow. These are all beautiful fall pieces that I’ve already shared either here or on my YouTube channel. So I guess today’s outfit is a remix!
In fact, one of the things I love about this outfit is that everything is from different brands and stores. That’s when I know I’m really getting mileage out of my purchases…they’re playing nicely with things I never even necessarily meant to pair them up with.
Let’s start with my jeans. These are the J. Crew 9″ Vintage Straight Jeans that I wore in yesterday’s video (of course they barely showed). They may have also shown up in last week’s video, What to Wear Dining Outside this Fall & Winter.
At any rate these I purchased these Vintage Straight Jeans because they just look and feel like basic jeans. Don’t get me wrong. Made from premium Japanese denim, they have plenty of stretch. You wouldn’t have caught me wearing them for a road trip if they weren’t comfy! But they also have a retro high rise and straight leg, making them reminiscent of the jeans you may have worn in the late 70s. I’m wearing my TTS 29.
Oh, and the 28″ inseam on these Vintage Straight Jeans works beautifully with boots or flats or sneakers.
I topped my jeans with my cotton boat-neck pullover from J.Jill. This soft mink heather hue is so versatile, but I sure am crushing on the cherry wine and sapphire colors, too. By the way, I got a little makeup on the collar of this sweater, so I washed it for the first time this week. It came through the washing machine beautifully. I even put it in the dryer until it was just damp, and then laid it on a rack to finish drying completely. Looks like new.
I’m wearing a small in the boat-neck pullover and it’s plenty roomy with a very generous, boxy cut. That’s one of the reasons I think it looks best with just a loose front tuck. I completed the look with this reversible belt. I’m wearing a medium.
I was so saddened to discover that my gold coin stretch bracelet had sold out. This bracelet is definitely one of my favorite finds of recent. But last weekend when I was in Chico’s and everything was 50% off, I did pick up this bronze convertible pendant necklace that works nicely with it. And it is still available.
I also felt like these drop hoop earrings played nicely with both pieces without looking matchy-matchy. Do you agree? Everything here is very lightweight, and the necklace can be worn on the other side and at different lengths, too. And last I checked Chico’s is offering 25% off these items and more.
Shopping Tip: I just updated my Shop My Chico’s Favorites page this week. They have some beautiful pieces for fall & winter, with a focus on comfort. You might want to check out my favorites!
I carried along my running shoes just in case we decided to hike a trail at a nearby state park. But I never changed out of my Thursday Boot Company Captain boots because they’re just that comfortable. (We didn’t end up hiking, but we did do a good bit of walking.)
I was just seeing a few lace-up boots last year, but I loved them so I purchased these Captain boots at the end of the season. This year I’m seeing lace-up boots everywhere. But I do think Thursday Boot Company does them the best, and I’m so very pleased with my investment. Mine are in the Old English color, but they have a dozen more to choose from. Thursday Boots also makes other boots, too, by the way.
This otherwise neutral look begged for a splash of color, so I topped it with my shiraz colored safari jacket. This basic utility jacket has so many things going for it – double closure with zipper and snaps, multiple pockets including a zip pocket, an internal cord for cinching the waist, the soft 100% cotton fabric and the snap cuffs that roll up easily. I love the worn shiraz wine color but it’s also available in an equally versatile indigo blue. I’m wearing a medium.
I guess the final piece of my outfit would be my Tory Burch McGraw leather hobo bag. But I’m pretty sure you’ve seen this easy-to-carry bag many times, either this one or my black one. I just love the unlined, roomy-but-not-too-roomy interior on these bags. They’re pricey, so watch for a rare sale. Still, if you’re interested in a faux leather bag that is comparable, I recommend this one by Topshop.

The most precious gifts I’ve ever received are those that make me think fondly and appreciatively of the giver. Many of those gifts gave me great joy as I opened them and originally used them, but with time they’ve become outdated or not as useful. Still I hold onto them because they remind me that the people who gave them to me love me.
But sometimes I mistakenly value a gift above the giver of the gift. Unfortunately, I think I’m most prone to do that with the gifts that God has given me. Do you ever become more attached to the things God has blessed you with than you are committed to or enthralled with Him? Jesus reminds us in today’s scripture that the Father has given us the greatest gift, Jesus Himself, the bread of God. He doesn’t just bless our lives with sweet things; He is the sweetest thing of all. And without Him life has little meaning. “Lord, always give us this Bread.”
Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world.” Then they said to Him, “Lord, always give us this bread.” ~ John 6:32-34
Good morning Kay! The top you are wearing is so pretty! I really like the jeans and jacket as well. The three pieces together make a great outfit. The leaves down here are changing ever so slowly. The scenery in your pictures is beautiful. The colorful leaves definitely makes me smile and thank God for all of the beauty around me. I hope that you have a fabulous day!
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts Ginger. It has truly been a gorgeous fall here. 😊
Great look and I really like a high wait jean myself…..maybe bc I was growing up like you said in the 70’s! Haha.
I do like when Talbots has 40 off which helps a lot.
Blessings,
Very pretty casual look! I know James is always proud to be seen with you.
Hi Kay. For anyone interested, the Halogen earrings in yesterday’s video are on sale at Nordstroms now. They are $24.50 instead of $35.00. Have a great day!
Wonderful! Thanks so much for letting us know, Peggy. I really enjoy those earrings. 😉
I just ordered them and another item through your link. Hope you get credit for both items. BTW, I know you are from Marietta. My son got engaged to a beautiful young lady from Marietta a month ago in the gazebo in Marietta Square. It is such a beautiful square. We have a square with a fountain in LaGrange, but no gazebo – still gorgeous!
Thanks Peggy. I’m sure I will. How sweet about your son’s engagement. I love the Marietta square. In fact I have a friend who got married in that gazebo. Congratulations!
Crisp outfit for crisp days! Love the boots, too! I’ve always been drawn to lace-up boots!
Hello Kay, I have the safari shiraz jacket too and love it. Great to get new ideas to pair with it. I am enjoying all your tips and outfit ideas.
Love the look of that jacket! I just ordered one through your site in the navy blue.
Another heads up! Gibsongirl.com has some amazing holiday pieces and more!!!💕
Hi Kay,
I liked the safari jacket that you are wearing and I got it in navy. But it seems like it runs small, if you are busty.
I may have to exchange for a bigger size. But the jacket is well made.
Thanks for your advice.
Hi Rekha. I’m glad you like the jacket. But I’m so sorry it didn’t fit right for you. Yeah, I’m definitely NOT busty. Ha! I hope you’re able to exchange it for the right size if needed. 🥰
