Casual Summer Outfit in Soft Neutrals

Welcome to Dressed for My Day. I’m swinging from one end of the pendulum to the other with today’s post. Tuesday I shared a colorful A-line skirt styled three ways and today I’m sharing an outfit void of color. But I absolutely love a casual summer outfit in soft neutrals. It’s calming, sophisticated and easy on the eyes.

Casual Summer Outfit in Soft Neutrals

Depending on where you live, this particular combination may be too warm for you. I know I have many readers who could definitely wear this lovely, oh-so-soft, 100% cotton sweater through the summer. But if this striped textured sweater and chino combination is too warm for you, maybe just consider the vibe of this outfit and how you could recreate it with similar textures and soft tones from your closet.

This combination of soft neutrals reminds me of the earthy tones we see at the seashore. I see shades of the wet sand along the water’s edge, the hues of seashells scattered there, the foam left by the crashing waves and the drier sand we walk through to get there.

Whites and camels are true neutrals that are available in a variety of tones. So every woman can find a shade of white and a shade of camel that works for her. If you prefer cool tones, look for true whites or those with a bit of pink mixed into the composition. Pair them with cool camels. For reference, I’d say my Tory Burch Miller sandals in “makeup” are more of a cool camel. Here’s a more economical choice for those sandals, by the way. And I have more in the shopping widget below.

Warm Neutrals

If you feel like warm tones look better on you, choose a creamy white or beige. Then pair it with warmer camel tones, like my Talbots relaxed chinos in sand castle. Or if, like me, you consider yourself to have neutral undertones, you absolutely can mix the different shades of white and camel in one outfit. In fact, the mixture creates a sort of textured effect in your outfit, adding interest and an eclectic, casual vibe.

I think gold is a natural choice for accessorizing a white and camel outfit. But you could also wear pearls or jewelry constructed from jute or other natural materials. I added my Kendra Scott Olive necklace, large gold hoop earrings and a gold stretch bracelet (nice option). And I’m wearing my Nordgreen Native 5-Link watch (use code KAYHRMS to save 15%).

My hat is no longer available, but I’ll link to others that are similar. For some reason, I’m having a hard time finding a variety of wide brimmed hats this summer. Maybe there’s something wrong in the supply chain due to this past year’s pandemic. At any rate, when you see one you like, grab it. They sell out well before the summer’s end.

Do you have neutrals in your summer wardrobe that you could pull together for a similar look? Or maybe you have a collection of greys, blacks or browns that you could use to create a tone on tone outfit. These combinations are so easy on the eyes and can also be rather slimming.

Before I close out, let me just run down the sizing information, in case you’re interested in any of the pieces I’m wearing today. I almost always size down to a small in tops at J.Jill, and this sweater is indeed a small. I’m wearing my TTS 8 in the relaxed chinos. And while the website indicates to size up in the Tory Burch Miller sandals, mine are in my TTS 9.5. I couldn’t possibly have sized up, as these are actually a little roomy on my feet.

Blessed for My Day

The religious leaders of Jesus’ day were baffled when He pronounced that abiding in His Word and discovering truth could set them free. They didn’t feel like they were enslaved to anything or anyone. But I hope that we, unlike these blinded and stubborn people, can see that, indeed, we have been enslaved during seasons of our lives.

The Bible teaches that we all have a bent toward sin. If nothing else, we are born enslaved to the flesh – those inner desires to please ourselves and even make more of ourselves than we really are. And during season of my life I know I have been in bondage to particular desires that took over and drove me like a harsh and never satisfied task master.

But Jesus spoke the truth, of course. When we abide in Him and His Word, allowing the truth of His Word to take root in our hearts, we can be set free from that which enslaves us. If you are struggling to break free from a compulsion that binds you right now, press into Him and take time each day to meditate on soul-satisfying scriptures. Ask Jesus to set you free. In time, He will.

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” ~ John 8:31-33

xoxo, Kay

  1. Hello again! I want to say thank you for the code at Nordgreens. I have now ordered a watch, Philosopher, in rose gold. Became 300 Swedish kronor cheaper with the code . Their watches are so beautiful. So THANK YOU again!

  2. You look so relaxed and so pulled together, Kay. I am a big fan of the shades of neutrals you are wearing. Everything is calming and pleasing to the eye.
Thank you for BFMD . BFMD always contains a blessing.
    Have a great Thursday!

  3. I have always liked tan and white paired together. Add in some stripes…Perfect! 🙂 I like everything about the outfit you’ve shown. Thank you for another great post! Enjoy your day!

  4. Lovely outfit! While I’m no means an expert, I’ve done a deep dive into flattering colors in an attempt to curate a smaller closet. While I too always considered myself neutral, because I can wear almost every color as long as it is deep or saturated enough, I’ve been reading that true neutrals are few and far between. Most of us “lean” at least a little. I’ve found I lean a little warm, and I think you might too. The true cools, like icy lavender, do not flatter me (although I can wear orchid). Try a really icy grey or lavender against your skin, and see what you think of it. The way you have been naturally gravitating to green also suggests to me that you instinctively see the warmth. Just a thought!

    1. Hi Linda. I do agree that most of us lean one way or the other. But I’m actually more cool tones than warm. I get the most compliments when I wear pink, red or blue. 😊

  5. Yesterday I was wearing a pretty blue linen tank, blue chambray over it and white pants. Blue and white top siders. I felt great all day. That outfit you have on, me all the way. I love it. What took me so long to realize I’m casual. I hate dress up. I have festivals, rodeos, fishing and art fairs. Not a heels and dress event in sight. That’s what dressed for “my” day means. 😊

  6. I love neutrals, too. These colours on you give you a relaxed, yet, classic look for summer. Very nice! You also looked smashing in the pink outfit with the cute A-line skirt.
You mention that you usually order small in tops at J. Jill. I have a question about the size you chose for the Long Eyelet Tunic from J.Jill which you wore in Monday’s blog, 4 Summer Outfit Completers. Is it small or medium? Thanks.
