Happy Friday, dear style enthusiast! I’m going to be enjoying the beautiful fall foliage today from the golf course. Yippee! But first I want to share with you a little style inspiration. Maybe I’ll even wear this to church Sunday! I’m creating a column of black with slimming wide leg pants from a new-to-me brand, Margaret M. (#gifted)
Of all the ways to put together slenderizing, chic outfits, creating a column of color is definitely my favorite. The foundational concept is simple and almost no-fail.
- Wear one color (often, but not always necessarily black) head to toe with either a dress or a combination of top and pants or top and skirt.
- Add an open front top layer in a contrasting color.
However, I do have a few extra tips to make this technique really work for you. The goal is to create a very cohesive, chic look, but also one that slenderizes and even elongates.
Style Tip #1 – You don’t have to wear solids to create this column of color. You could just as easily wear a combination of print and solid or just a print. But the print would probably need to be dense and heavy on the desired color. For instance, I could have worn a black micro-check pant, such as these black textured houndstooth pants. (Use code KAY10 for 10% savings)
Style Tip #2 – Wear shoes in the same color you’re wearing head to toe. Thus the toe. Ha! But, once again, they don’t have to be solid. Like my snake print booties, you could wear a patterned shoe in which your chosen color is dominant. A patterned shoe adds interest without detracting from the effect you’re creating.
Style Tip #3 – Use your accessories to tie the look together. For instance, my courier bag (40% off but no longer in black) features caramel stitching that coordinates with the toffee color of my flannel blazer. I meant also to wear my long pendant that includes both black and deep brown, but unfortunately I left home without it.
While I could have worn a black turtleneck or even a black blouse, I chose to keep my look a little more modern and casual by topping it with a ribbed long sleeve t-shirt similar to this one. Mine is from Banana Republic and they no longer have a black one. But this fine ribbed crewneck from Madewell (at Nordstrom) looks very similar.
My black pants were gifted to me by Margaret M, a brand I was formerly unfamiliar with. They simply requested that I share them on Instagram, so the fact that I’m building a blog post around them should tell you how impressed I am with these ponte wide leg pants.
I’m wearing my usual size medium (8-10) in the ponte wide leg pants and they are so generously comfortable. But they also are slimming and thick enough to conceal any panty lines or, ahem, other unseemly lines and bumps. Keep in mind that I am 5’8″ and the inseam is 32 inches. I wish they had one more inch on them for me, because I definitely prefer to wear a bit of a heel with a wide or boot leg pant. But they are truly lovely pants.
Margaret M has graciously given me a promo code to share exclusively with my readers for 10% off your purchase through October 26. Use code KAY10 when you place your order. I also noticed that this Canadian brand offers free shipping with your purchase of $50 or more. And be sure to peruse their website. I also tried the Marlie Olive Textured Houndstooth Slimming Pants and like them very much, too. Both fit true to size.
By the way, the Margaret M ponte wide leg pants are not included in the shopping widget below. But I’m including comparable pants.
Like I said, I really wish I’d worn a long pendant necklace with this look, but I left it off accidentally. Still the giraffe pendant (similar), my classic gold knot earrings and my coin stretch bracelet (comparable option) provide a nice amount of shine and interest to the look.
My Italian flannel jacket is a new favorite find from Talbots. I’m wearing a size 8. It’s on the pricey end, but I grabbed it up when it was 50% off. It will go on sale again, so if you’re interested in it or one of the other three colors, definitely “favorite” it on the shopping widget below so you’ll receive a notification. Or just stay tuned here!
Have you tried creating a column of black or some other color? Do you find it to be slenderizing, too? I’d love to hear from you. And let me know if you have any questions. I’ll gladly get back with you…as soon as I’m off the golf course!

When we look to satisfy our hungry souls through means other than through the Bread of Life, the Living Water, we come up dry. In Jeremiah 2:13, the Lord said, “For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, The fountain of living waters, To hew for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns that can hold no water.” The rainwater that accumulates in a cistern eventually dries up and the pit begins to stink. In the same way, you may have found yourself at the bottom of a stinky, unhealthy pit if you’ve tried to satisfy your hungry soul through a person, thing, activity or pursuit.
But when we allow Jesus to satisfy our hungry souls – our needs for love, significance, purpose and security – He always provides that which is healthy and truly satisfies. And there’s always more when we return to Him the next time. Plus, it’s free. We don’t have to sacrifice or work for that which does not satisfy; instead, we can eat freely and abundantly from that which Jesus gives liberally.
When they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost.” So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. ~ John 6:12-13
Good Morning Kay. You look lovely in today’s outfit. I love caramel and black together, I think it is very classy. One of my favorite Bible stories is the loaves and fishes, the abundance of Gods love is so evident. Enjoy your golf game🥰
Beautiful look, Kay! Caramel and black together are classic and classy. Have a wonderful weekend!
Thanks for the Bible story. What an example of God’s goodness and faithful to us.
The Lord bless you and your family, Kay.

I really like this outfit that you have styled and it looks fabulous on you. Lately I have wondered if it was okay to wear this type of pant so I’m glad that you showcased it today. I also have wondered if pins or brooches attached to lapels was back. Now I know all is okay. Thanks, Kay!
Thank you for putting a wide leg pant on your blog. I cannot wear the tight pants because I wear a full leg brace (had polio when a child). I am new to your blog but absolutely love it. Your are always so encouraging. I also love your blessings. Thank you
Id be willing to bet a lot more women wear wide leg, ponte than tight jeans in the over fifty age range. Loved the loops. . Love the pin and dying for the boots!
Well, I meant to type looks not loops but apparently my fingers have a will of their own.
You look stunning in this absolutely beautiful outfit! I hope that your day on the golf course was enjoyable. We’ve had a beautiful fall day down in our part of south central Georgia.
LOVED the outfit today Kay! Never really thought of wearing those 2 colors together but the more I am seeing the more I am loving it. I really look forward to your daily posts. Thank you for helping us all to look our best!
Dear Kay,
Oh my goodness, thank you for introducing us to Margaret M! I think it is love at first sight for me, because they have SKIRTS! A-line and pencil. I am thrilled and can’t wait to try one out. Living in a warm climate, and preferring skirts anyway, I have such a challenge finding polished yet not overly formal skirts for everyday wear. I have everything from denim skirts to Talbots casual to CK suit skirts in my closet, and I think Margaret M will fill a gap. Just when I was lamenting the closure of more stores in our area, as well as the closure and ending of entire businesses, you have come to the rescue with a new option!
Thank you, Kay, for sorting things out for us, your loyal readers, especially in these changing times.
Love the boots..
