A Dress for the One I Love

Because I work from a home office, I confess, I don’t always dress up for my day. You’d be surprised how many of these fashion blog posts are written in my pajamas. (Or maybe you aren’t surprised by that confession at all! Ha!) But I really do try to get “dressed for my day”…most days. I’m a strong believer in dressing not just for those we come across in the marketplace and community, but dressing for the ones we love…our families. And maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I also think it’s important to dress up a little for the one I love…my husband. So today I’m sharing a dress for the one I love.

Dress for the One I Love

My mellow red Aventura dress is several years old, but I love putting it back in my closet each spring. It’s so easy to slip into and move effortlessly through my day, whether I’m writing, tidying up the house, cooking a big meal or running errands. This is the kind of dress you don’t feel guilty lounging in, but you also don’t mind running to the grocery store in.

Seventy-five percent of Aventura’s clothing line is made of sustainable or low impact materials. For instance, my dress is 60% organic cotton and 40% rayon from bamboo. While this Aventura dress is no longer available, I found a few more current dresses from them that I like equally well. You might like the Amberley Dress which comes in four beautiful colors. And the Avis Dress is somewhat of a steal, and I may order one myself. It features a beautiful and unique cut-out back bodice.

Every year I try to invest in one new comfortable but fashionable dress that I primarily intend to wear around the house. I think it’s worth it for my husband to see me dress up “for his eyes only” every now and again.  And that doesn’t have to be lingerie, it can be what I wear while we watch an old movie together, play a board game or prep the backyard for company.

I also have in my closet a colorful and easy-going dress from Royal Robbins. I’ll share it with you one of these days. It has a thicker fabric and feels a little sturdier for not only household activity, but maybe even a picnic or long evening stroll. In fact, I love to take it on vacation. The Royal Robbins All-Around Dress looks very similar to mine and also appears to be made of a heavier but still breathable 56% cotton, 39% polyester and 5% spandex. You can throw it in the washing machine and the dryer. And I do both with mine.

I also love wearing dresses like this when traveling on car trips. They feel cooler than pants or even shorts to me, and I can wear easy-on-easy-off flip flops with them. That’s how I roll! Down the highway in the heat of the summer anyhow!

And by the way, I usually opt for a different undergarment when wearing dresses. I have a few pair of these Spanx Perforated Mid-Thigh Shorts and love them. They don’t really shape, but they create a smooth, seamless appearance. But I don’t see many available so I assume they have been discontinued. I think if I were to buy something equivalent now, I’d perhaps choose these Jockey Skimmies Slipshort or the Jockey Skimmies Short Length Slipshorts.

I haven’t really purchased that one cute, functional and comfortable dress yet this summer. But I’ve been looking at dresses for a long time at Title Nine and these really speak to me. I’m hoping to be traveling to Oregon this summer, so I think I’ll visit one of their shops while I’m there. Meanwhile, I’ll keep looking at them online, and you might want to check them out, too. Alice’s Dress looks a lot like the one I’m wearing in this post, but in trendier colors. And I also have my eyes on the Amelia Short Sleeve Dress, the Hilary Dress and the Daring Dress…’cause I’m so daring and all! Not. *wink*

Meanwhile, at Talbots I’ve been looking at some of the dresses in their T by Talbots line. I like the Kaleidoscope Tile-Print Dress, the Soft Drape Jersey Maxi Dress and the Santorini Drawstring Waist Dress.

And in this previous post I did share Talbots’ Zig Zag Printed Shift Dress. It’s a little “dressier” than most I’ve linked to here, but it’s still great for dinner in with the one you love.

Do you like to wear easy-breezy dresses for puttering around the house or going on road trips? And what are your thoughts on dressing up a little at home? Have you bought a new simple dress for the spring and summer? I’d love to hear from you! Thanks so much for reading.

Blessed for My Day

Do you feel discouraged? Maybe not depressed or despondent, but just at the end of your rope in one area of life that is eating your lunch? I get it. Sister, I encourage you to remember that the story isn’t complete yet. God is working. And, yes, sometimes He works very slowly and behind the scenes when we’d prefer He hurry up already. But we can trust that He will not allow this to get the best of you. He loves you too much to let you be destroyed by your circumstances. Press on, be courageous and trust in your good and faithful God.
But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. ~ 2 Corinthians 4:7-10

  1. Kay … I too love to wear dresses or short straight skirts & a sleeveless or tank top around the house and on road trips. Mine are usually either denim and/or cotton … I jokingly remarked to my husband just the other day when wearing one, that I feel like June Cleaver… But it does make me feel differently, in a really good way, to dress femininely … Jan

  2. Mondays are really, really busy for me, so I appreciate receiving your newsletter later in the day. Your manicure post was extremely helpful to me. I personally would really like to see you continue with in depth tutorials once a week.

    1. Great to know, Patty. I’m trying to come up with some of those. Let me know if there’s anything in particular you’d like more info on. Always open to suggestions! Thanks for reading 🙂

  3. Im a leggings and tee shirt (tunic) kind of girl thats my weekend wear. No one to dress up for other than me. So Im good.

  4. I love dresses! I too wear dresses when we travel. This is cute and looks so comfy. I remember when I was little, we would always “get ready ” before Daddy came home from work. Which then entailed washing our face, hands and brushing our hair. This is something I continued with my girls. So yes, I get dressed for the one I love❤️, even after 36 years!

    1. Oh, I love that memory! How sweet! And how nice that you did that for your husband with your girls. AND congrats on 36 years of marriage…to the one you love!

  5. I absolutely prefer skirts and dresses in the summer. Honestly, I just don’t think shorts are very comfortable unless they are the atheletic, elastic in the waist kind! ? My husband works from home and I only work away from home part time. You inspire me to think a little beyond my comfy shorts and Comfort Color t-shirts. ? Thanks, Kay!!!

    1. Hey, you know I’m all for those Comfort Colors tees, too! Be sure to check out my new post on Between Pedicures. I mentioned you!

  6. I love this post, Kay! I, too, am a fan of casual dresses. They are super easy and do look a little more put together than jeans or shorts and a t shirt. I think they are a great value adder to my wardrobe, too, since they’re so versatile (dress up/ dress down with different shoes, topper, and jewelry)! I also keep my hair very short, so the added femininity of a dress is always a plus!

  7. I don’t wear dresses too often. One reason is that unless it’s lined, I don’t know what to wear underneath since “slips” are no longer in style. So I appreciate your undergarment suggestions! Also, I appreciate that you include your choice of shoes in your posts as that is a challenge for me too. Thanks for a great blog!

    1. Yes, the shaping shorts really help a lot with creating a smooth appearance but honestly they help prevent chafing and such too. But you know, I’ve been considering trying on some slips and buying a new one. Not necessarily for a dress like this one but for some others. I’m thinking we’re missing out on a smooth appearance because we stopped wearing them. So I’m reconsidering that trend! ?
