Happy hump day! About midweek I’m usually ready to sprinkle a little fun into my day. Whether I sneak off for a Target run, tempt James to go out for ice cream or just slip in a Hallmark movie, I usually need to loosen up a little by Wednesday. So I thought this would be a good day to talk about how to wear pedal pushers this summer. After all, these knee length pants are just about having fun!
Now before you completely write off this 1950s – 1960s style, take a deep breath and chill a little. No, these are not the pants you’ll wear to the office. And they’re not high fashion. But if styled correctly, you absolutely can wear pedal pushers and look contemporary, fresh and ready for a good time.
Then again, let me clarify. You can wear pedal pushers, also known as clam diggers, and look either frumpy or contemporary. It’s all in the styling and the fit.
For the most modern vibe, buy clam diggers that fit close to the body, not the loose fitting goucho style. At the same time, you don’t want your pedal pushers to fit tight, just comfortably snug. These are “playtime” pants! Thus their monikers – pedal pushers and clam diggers!
My pedal pushers hit just below the knee, but some hit right at the knee or just above. Also you can cuff them up if you wish. These pedal pushers are extremely comfortable and fun to wear. They also come in a pretty light aqua. I’m wearing an 8, so order the size you wear in pants, not necessarily jeans.
By the way, that’s why I prefer pedal pushers over capris. Capri pants traditionally hit mid calf, which is not very flattering on most women. But pedal pushers hit at a thinner part of the leg for most of us, so they actually create a more attractive silhouette.
I also suggest you resist the urge to just dial it in with a slouchy tee on top. Keep that playful feel going with a sweet tee in a contemporary shape, like this tie front t-shirt. I also purchased this navy embroidered yoke t-shirt to wear with these colonial red pedal pushers.
I kept my jewelry simple and youthful. In fact, I wear both my star and moon studs and my gold hoops quite often. And I know you’ve seen this sweet palm necklace many times before. But I just. can’t. stop! You’ll find similar bracelets to the one I’m wearing here.
The choice of shoes to wear with pedal pushers is pleasingly few: fashion sneakers, youthful sandals or ballet flats. I’d pretty much limit your shoe choice to one of those three. Okay, maybe penny loafers. But just keep it playful and fresh! I wore my no-show socks with my leather Keds for a super comfy selection.
For cool nights at the beach or ball park, grab your denim jacket. I like my classic white denim jacket with this red and blue pairing. And I carried my Vera Bradley all-in-one crossbody for my essentials. This pattern is no longer available, but they always have new ones to choose from.
By the way, these red pedal pushers (and the light aqua ones) are currently 25% off. And they’re available in petite and plus sizes, too.

Blessed for My Day
I’ve loved seeing the way my readers are encouraging one another on the Dressed for My Day Challenge Facebook group. And yesterday that congeniality spilled over onto the comments in the blog post, too. How wonderful!
You know encouragement is so underrated. Think about what a little encouragement does for a woman. It infuses her with the courage to press on, make a change, dream big, go another mile, put in the work and face the battle. Encouragement also keeps us from quitting, reminds us of the truth, refreshes our resolve and breathes new life into our weary souls. Today let’s be women who encourage those around us. That requires a little involvement, some time and a lot of heart.
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. ~ 1 Thessalonians 5:11

What a coincidence! I am wearing a pair of pedal pushers today, in the Time And True brand from Wal-Mart. They retail for $13.97, so for anyone that wants to try a pair without investing a lot of money, I highly recommend these. The fabric and fit are really nice. Along with the black pair I have on today, I also have a navy pair. For me, they are a great replacement for shorts. Both Larry and I were sick Monday night and yesterday, so I spent very little time online, nor did we get to actually celebrate our anniversary. That will happen tomorrow. Hopefully, I can actually participate in the challenge for today. I hope you get some fun in today!
OMG…I have not heard the words “pedal pushers” in ages!!! Why have we not heard these called this for the past few years or have I just been hiding under a rock…LOL Yep…that takes me back in time to that word and I would SO wear these because I am not a shorts wearer much;only at home. I do like Bermuda shorts but these pedal pushers would get me a little more length without cutting me off at the calf of my leg. I bet the blue top you got to wear with them will look really pretty too. Since we don’t have a Talbots around to try them on, I may have to try Ginger Hillers hint to check them out at Walmart to see how they look on me. I REALLY like how they look on you Kay!
Kay, I have never left a comment before, but felt compelled today to tell you how much I look forward to and enjoy your blog every day. I really like your style and who you are as a person. Thank you for all the time you must put into making each post so relevant and fun! I am always blessed by your “Blessed for my day” scripture and encouragement. I hope that you are as blessed and encouraged as you have blessed and encouraged others.
Thanks so much for introducing yourself, Cyndy. And I really appreciate your kind and affirming words. Means the world to me. It’s such a pleasure to serve you gals. It is a lot of work but when I get comments like yours it is all worth it. Thanks for taking the time to let me know. ?
I already have a Pinterest board titled Closet-Spring & Summer. I have one for Fall & Winter as well. I pin things from Bloggers and Pinterest in general that suit my taste and style. I refer back to it frequently. I hope this counts as today’s challenge. Have a great evening, and soak up some fun!
Great Nancy. It’s such a handy tool if you use it. ?
Great post, as always!
Those colonial red petal pushers look so fun and stylish… on you. Love the look, and the color even more. Just tried them in the store- both in petite and misses, ( at 5’3” , short waisted, more tummy than hips, and shapely calves; I always test out both lengths in everything possible) but the cut and length didn’t flatter my proportions. Even tried the drawstring cuffed pants in the same lovely faded red. The length and front view were flattering, but the back was oh so… not— too saggy. Nothing came home with me this time.
I tried … but not for me. Guess I’m a crops or ankle enthusiast.
Yeah, keep in mind that I am 5’8”. Height and proportions definitely make a difference. And there are certainly things I cannot wear for similar reasons.
Just bought a lovely petite pair from Next perfect fit.
