Look Like a Million Bucks in a Blazer this Spring

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about defining my personal style. In fact, I’m currently taking a video course with a popular YouTuber in which we’re going through a 6-week process of mastering our personal style. I’ll share more soon! But one thing I know for certain, a blazer is a signature piece in my personal style. And because I love wearing my blazers so much, I thought I’d share with you a few tips to help you, too, look like a million bucks in a blazer this spring.

I own a LOT of blazers. I love them. Some women love handbags. Others fill their closet with shoes. I put my money in blazers. And I wear them year round. I bet hardly a week goes by that I don’t wear at least one blazer during the week. I wear them to church, to lunch, to travel, on vacation, to conferences, you name it.

BUT you don’t have to own a lot of blazers or wear them weekly to enjoy a good blazer now and again. Honestly, I think every woman should consider owning at least one versatile blazer. Adding one to any outfit will immediately elevate that look. And, while these jackets are classics and never really go out of style, they’re definitely trending right now…and have been for about five years.

I’m also highlighting some of my favorite sources for good blazers throughout the post. With each tip I’m also supplying a shopping widget to a favorite retailer. You’ll find a variety of styles and a full range of prices. Some are investments while others are less expensive options.

Tip #1 – Shop for a blazer that works with your personal style essence.

I know many of my readers have a fairly classic style essence like myself. Most blazers will definitely accentuate a classic style essence beautifully. But even if you consider yourself to be more sporty or a little renegade or distinctly feminine, you can find a blazer that will accentuate your personal style while elevating your outfits.

Choose a blazer that has characteristics that will work well with your personal style. For instance, if you are a feminine, romantic dresser, consider a soft pink blazer or one with feminine details such as ruffles. Or if you’re a little edgy in your personal style, maybe stick with a black blazer or an oversized one. You do you!

Shop Talbots for blazers: I think Talbots does a great job with their blazers. They generally fit true to size, and many come in misses, petite, plus and plus petites. I dug deep into Talbots’ website to find blazers from previous seasons that still look stylish but now are marked down. Those are available in limited sizes, of course. But they’re worth a look. For instance, this pretty yellow linen blazer from a previous season is only available in plus petite sizes, but it’s gorgeous!

Tip #2 – Make sure the blazer fits you perfectly.

As with all garments, you want your blazer to fit you nicely. How can you tell if a blazer fits? It should fit you perfectly in the shoulders when you purchase it. That’s an alteration that is difficult to make, and a blazer that is well-fitted in the shoulders will look like it’s made for you.

The blazer does not have to button in the front, but it should look like it could if needed. If you have a truly classic style essence or are preppy or elegant in your style, you’ll probably want your sleeves to be altered to just the right length. They should end between the wrist bone and the bottom of your thumb. But if you appreciate a more casual or slightly edgy look, it is perfectly acceptable to roll up, scrunch up or cuff up those slightly long sleeves.

Oversized blazers are very much “in” right now, but you still want that boxier silhouette to look like it fits you in the shoulders. Really, a good fit in the shoulders is key.

Shop Blazers at Ann Taylor: Just this weekend everything at Ann Taylor was 50% off with a code. I’m hoping the bargain continues today. If not, check back in. Ann Taylor frequently runs similar offers. They have beautifully tailored blazers that are especially suited for the office, but also work nicely for a casual lifestyle.

Tip #3 – Accentuate your personal body shape and proportions with the right blazer.

You absolutely can find a blazer that works for your body shape and proportions. Right now, because blazers are so very popular, we’re finding them in every length and style imaginable, from long and straight to cropped and fitted and all in between.

Know the lengths and shapes that work best for you and keep this information in mind as you shop for a blazer. Remember, many stores carry blazers in petite and plus sizes, too.

Shop Target for Blazers: I’ve been surprised to find a great blazer or two at Target. They’re not generally the best made and they’re sometimes more trendy. But if you’re just trying out a blazer and not sure it’s for you, Target is a great place to shop.

Tip #4 – Purchase your blazer with cost per wear in mind.

I don’t mind investing in well-made blazers because I know that I will wear mine frequently and for years. But if you plan to wear yours only very occasionally, then look for blazers in a price that will give you a better price per wear.

For instance, the blazer above is from Target. It was one of my first plaid blazers, so I wasn’t quite sure about the trend. But after enjoying that blazer, I’ve since purchased pricier plaid blazers because I know that I enjoy wearing them frequently.

Shop Express for Blazers: One of my favorite places to find fairly well made blazers in styles that mimic the pricier brands is Express. They always have a great selection and frequently run sales. For instance, this ivory peak lapel double breasted blazer looks a lot like this designer blazer (which is on sale by the way) but it’s a fraction of the cost.

But because blazers have become one of my signature style pieces, I do generally invest in a good blazer or two per year. Honestly, there is a difference in the way blazers fit and feel on your body. A well structured blazer feels amazing on and makes you feel like a million bucks. My favorite designer brands are Veronica Beard, Reiss and L’Agence. Buts honestly, I was surprised at how much I love the grey blazer I recently was gifted by LilySilk. It’s not as pricey as the other designers I mentioned, but this double breasted slim blazer feels pretty amazing and fits like a glove.

Shop Veronica Beard for Blazers: Of course the most magical thing about Veronica Beard blazers is that most (maybe all???) of them accommodate dickeys that you can interchange to create different looks. Make no mistake about it, those dickeys are pricey, too. But they completely change the look of the blazers. I’ve included some in the shopping widget below.

Tip #5 – Wear your blazer with a dress.

Now let’s talk about a few ways to wear your blazers this spring. I love a pretty blazer with a dress.

I especially think blazers in pretty colors or white look great with spring and summer dresses.

You can wear the blazer or just toss it over your shoulders. So chic!

You can wear a blazer with most any dress that has a fitted waist or a slim silhouette.

Tip #6 – Wear your blazer with jeans.

I love a blazer with jeans. In fact, this is probably the way I wear my blazers most often.

To me, the easiest way to pair your blazer with jeans is to wear a plain t-shirt underneath. It’s such a simple outfit formula, but always effective.

When you wear your blazer with jeans, your shoe choices are limitless. I love simply wearing sneakers with my blazer and jeans. But you could also opt for loafers, mules, sandals or heels.

But another fun way to wear your blazer with jeans is to add a graphic tee underneath. The photo above is several years old, but the style is still great. I’m receiving this gingham blazer this week, and I’ll definitely style it this way some.

Shop Everlane for Blazers: Another place I love for blazers is Everlane. I always feel like I’m paying a fair price at Everlane and the products are well made and very modern.

Tip #7 – Style your blazer by popping the collar and/or cuffing the sleeves.

Remember my philosophy: Don’t just wear it; style it. Yes, you absolutely can wear your blazer the traditional way. And there’s nothing wrong with that. But right now we’re wearing blazers for a very elevated casual vibe. And one of the ways you can achieve that look is by rolling up the sleeves a bit and/or popping the collar in the back.

A lot of blazers even have contrasting fabric lining the blazer or under the collar, creating a little interest at those points.

Tip #8 – Wear a blazer in a breathable fabric during spring and summer.

While I’m game for wearing most of my all-season blazers in the warmer months, my favorites are my linen blazers at this time of year.

In fact, my white linen blazer is probably my most worn blazer in my collection. And this year I’ve ordered this flax colored linen blazer during a recent flash sale. Don’t worry about your linen blazer wrinkling a bit. It’s part of the charm. Linen denotes leisure and charm. Plus it keeps you cool.

Tip #9 – Wear a blazer to work this spring.

I’m a firm believer in the concepts of enclothed cognition. This phenomenon reminds us that, among other things, our clothing communicates a lot about us. Not only do other people interpret much about our character, potential, authority and ability from the way we’ve dressed, but we show up differently depended on how we’ve dressed for our day. And nothing makes me feel smarter or more capable than donning a blazer.

Right now matching suit coordinates are trending, but you can also top any pair of dress slacks with a linen, cotton or knit blazer for a sharp, authoritative look.

If you do enjoy wearing a blazer, however, it might be a good time to invest in matching separates for a suit. You can always break it up, but wearing the pieces together is a very current look.
