Hi gals! I hope your week is moving along well. I learned yesterday that my daughter Abby is sick with either a very bad cold or potentially the flu. Y’all. She lives 2,000 miles away, and it just breaks my heart not to be able to help her out. So I’m texting her the meds she needs, encouraging her as much as I can and praying. I guess that’s all I can do. #longdistancemomblues
Well, let’s try to get my mind elsewhere! Today I’m sharing a modern classic outfit in shades of blue. I bet you’ll like it. I sure do!
I’ll have to confess, over the past year as I’ve begun to realize that I’m just a classic dresser through and through, I became a little discouraged. Classic doesn’t seem very hip! (LOL! There’s probably a more modern word to use than “hip” these days!)
But two things have encouraged me to embrace my style recently. One, I’ve learned that so many of my readers also identify with the classic style aesthetic. Not only that, but it occurred to me that millions of women probably would say they enjoy classic apparel, too. So I’m in good company.
The second thing that emboldened me to own my classic style and go with it is that I decided I can dress classically but still look modern. That is I can if I put in the effort. So I’ve decided to take on the challenge of consistently using classic pieces to create timeless but contemporary outfits.
If you’re a classic gal, too, you’ll find plenty of classic pieces in my outfits. But I’m trying, as I embark on my second year of style blogging, to work toward coordinating classic looks that are also modern and fresh. That way, even if you have a different style essence, maybe you’ll see something here that resonates with you.
My personal style challenge is to fully embrace my naturally classic style while keeping it contemporary and fresh with modern accents. Click To TweetIf you’re wondering what I’m talking about when I mention style essence, you might want to take my quick little automated quiz that helps you determine your own style essence. It’s free! And you can even share your results on Facebook so that your friends can take the quiz, too.
So in keeping with my efforts to present to you modern, classic styles, I bring you today’s look in soft shades of blue. I’m wearing my classic blue chambray shirt with these modern double frayed girlfriend chinos in teal sky. Of course, it helps that I’m walking the streets of Bisbee, Arizona, a uniquely quirky, artsy town near the border of Mexico.
I’m wearing the chambray shirt in a medium and the chinos in size 8. Those are my normal sizes, so they run true to size.
While my sandals, belt and handbag are also decidedly classic choices, my seaside inspired necklace adds another contemporary touch. None of these four items are available any longer. (I shopped my closet just as you gals like to do.) But I’m linking to similar products in the widget below.
I love the ease and casualness of this blue and light teal combination. The gentle colors give this outfit a very earthy and soft feel. Don’t you think?
I hope you enjoyed today’s post. I sure enjoyed writing it. It helped me to type out my personal style challenge for the year. What’s your personal style challenge this year?

Blessed for My Day
All we have to do is turn on the evening news for a few minutes to know how many people have secrets they’d rather no one ever discover. It turns out that the nature of secrets is that they consistently if slowly work their way to the surface, exposing the one who has been hiding them with lies of deception. Eventually the truth will come out.
Do you have a secret? I only ask because I’ve had them in the past. And it didn’t work well for me. I’ve discovered that it’s to my benefit to find a trustworthy and wise woman to confide in, one who will gently help me bring my secrets out into the light so that I can live in freedom, victory and authenticity. God is gracious. If you will bring Him your secrets, confess and repent, He will help you live in the light instead.
My brothers, if any among you strays from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his life from death and cover a multitude of sins. ~ James 5:19
Gorgeous!! Here’s to James too!! Wink!
Thanks Susanne! Our men are pretty special, huh! ?
I like how you have the 2 blues together. If I hadn’t seen it I would have thought it was to matchy-matchy to wear 2 blues but it really looks great. I love the frayed hem and modern necklace – I can definitely wear this!
I so agree! What a unique color combination. And the pictures are beautiful!
Thanks Deanna! ❤️
Yeah, I kinda stumbled upon this look! And I was so glad I did. ?
Love this. ☺️ I’m certainly classic, too. Maybe classic style is classic for a reason… it always looks good- with a little pizazz thrown in for good measure. ☺️ Sorry to hear Abby is sick. ? ?
Thanks. I’m hoping she is improving today, but these things generally take time. ?
I won’t say you’ll NEVER get over your mom feelings, but I hope not! My son is 37 and I still hurt when he does. ? Praying that your daughter feels better soon!
Love the look! I’m “timeless,” but working with others much younger than me, I try to stay modern without looking like I’m trying too hard. And you help! Thank you.
Yes, I think being around younger women a lot is a great motivator and inspiration to keep our looks modern. Thanks for reading and sharing Diane. ?
I had fun doing the style quiz! It was very accurate. I love the classic style too, and I usually add small modern touches to create updated but not overly trendy looks. I love your emails in my inbox every day! I am up here in Montana where we are still buried in snow and I get lustful at all your sunny pictures….but oh well!
Oh I’m so glad you enjoyed the quiz. It is definitely meant to be fun, but I’m hoping it’s pretty accurate too. I had a lot of fun putting it together. And I would LOVE to see Montana some day. I don’t think I have ever been there. Have a wonderful day. Spring is definitely coming!! ????
Neat pieces and good looking together. Like the front tuck! Beautiful background in pics! Thinking of your daughter!
Thanks Kaye! All around!! ?
Beautiful photography and outfit! This color combo is very calming. Praying for your daughter!
Yes calming. I love a little calm! ??
I’m praying for your daughter to recover quickly and that it’s not the flu. Likewise, prayers for your Mama’s heart. No matter our kid’s age, we will always be their Mama! Personally, I love embracing the classic style, I feel the look is sophisticated, I don’t mean in a snobby way, just timeless and classy. It’s how you put those pieces together then elevating the look with modern and current colors, and maybe adding a trendy accessory that makes a fresh, very well put-together outfit!
PS: Kay, I clicked the button to receive comments via email but I’m not sure I understood what that meant. I thought I was signing up to receive email from you only or if someone replied directly to a comment I posted. I hope I didn’t sign up to receive every comment from every subscriber who comments to you. Though I enjoy reading others comments, I just cannot have that much email coming to my Inbox. If this is the case, is there a way to cancel/edit the notifications?
Hi again, Nancy. LOL! I’ve often wondered the same thing when I sign up for the comments. I think you should just get a response from me. Let me know if something else happens. Hahaha! I’m constantly trying to figure this whole setup out!
Thanks for your sweet comments, Nancy. I think Abby is feeling significantly better today. And that makes me feel better, too! Meanwhile, my husband has gotten a little sick! Oh well. I guess it’s that time of year.
I have to agree with all of the above comments, beautiful outfit, and great job with the photography!! I also really like the double hem on the pants, and the combination of the two blues. Thanks for sharing, definitely an outfit I would wear! Prayers for a speedy recovery for your daughter. My mom feelings are as strong as ever, and my kids are 28, 32 and 34. I don’t every want to lose them. I believe your kids only get one mom, that will love and care for them like that so hold on to those feelings. Have a blessed day!
Thanks for your kind words, Cindy. I think Abby is feeling much better but still had to stay home from work today. And it definitely is a good thing to CARE, isn’t it? Have a blessed day!
I am praying for your daughter. Chicken Soup really works! Maybe someone can buy lots of it for her. James pictures are awesome. Your “Blue” outfit will work for me too. I never thought to put the darker blue on top. Thanks for the idea. The pearls make it girly girl which puts the perfect touch on “classic”. I can shop my closet too. I like your chinos so I guess I will have to try on a pair to see if they will fit me.
Hi Aimee. Yes, I think someone brought her chicken soup yesterday. And she’s feeling much better today, but still home from work. She definitely didn’t want to spread whatever she’s had. I’m glad you like the outfit! Thanks so much for reading and commenting! 🙂
Such a pretty outfit in a gorgeous setting! Great job by your photographer. Prayers for Abby. My daughter was home sick from work today with some kind of bug and I just got over a cold I had for almost two weeks! It is the season. I hope the weather catches up to the calendar soon.
Thanks Deb. Abby seems to be feeling somewhat better today but still missed work. Hoping tomorrow she’s much improved. Thanks so much for dropping in and leaving a comment. ?
I’m a brand new reader – found your blog through a link on Susanna’s blog (I think) – and I found her blog through a link on yet another blog. The other two I don’t follow, but I love your blog and added it to my Bloglovin list! The first thing that attracted me to your blog is your name (haha, same as mine). The second thing, after I had read several posts, is that your personal beliefs and faith shine through in your writing. You are also articulate, thoughtful and have a great writing style.
Also appealing is your admitting to having classic taste in your style! I mostly choose classic styles as well, and I have realized that it is a good thing! I try to stay with clothing that will last and not be discarded quickly because I tire of it or it’s no longer in style. I believe this is part of my responsibility in caring for this world.
Right now I am searching for five words to help me refine and define my style. So far I have come up with classic, whimsical and approachable. Maybe reading your blog will help me figure out those last two words!
Well Kay, it’s just wonderful to meet you. I love it when readers introduce themselves. I really want to create a community here. And that involves more than one voice, ha! I’m very glad you are enjoying the blog and I look forward to seeing you around here more. Have a blessed evening!! ???
