It may not officially be spring yet, but we had a glorious spring-like day yesterday. So I’m feeling oh so joyful. We got out and shot photos for the blog for the first time in over a month, and it felt so good. I’ve got some “happy” fashions from Target and J.Jill coming to the blog soon. But first I’ve got to finish sharing the photos we took on our working staycation about a month ago. And really this is perfect timing because these modern linen pants I’m sharing today are 20% off in Athleta’s Friends & Family sale starting today.
I absolutely fell in love with linen pants last summer. I collected linen pants from Eileen Fisher, Chico’s and Christopher & Banks. And I’ll definitely be wearing all of them again this summer. But none of those are quite as modern and fresh as these chambray blue linen pants from Athleta.
I can think of so many ways to wear these chambray blue linen pants this spring and summer. When I put this outfit together I was envisioning what I’d wear on a cool evening at the beach. Sometimes I go with my parents to St. Augustine Beach, Florida, in February, but this year I chose not to go due to the pandemic. But if I’d gone, these chambray blue linen pants would have been in my suitcase for sure.
I’m wearing my TTS 8 in the regular length and they’re plenty long for wearing with sneakers or sandals, which is what I’d normally wear with my linen pants. Remember, I’m 5’8″. But Athleta does carry these chambray blue linen pants in petite and tall sizes 0-16 and in regular length in sizes 00-26. They also come in black and white.
I also appreciate that these chambray blue linen pants are a little sportier than my other ones. They feature an elasticized waistband, a sporty draw cord and functional zipper pockets. I have a feeling these will be favorites this summer. And right now Athleta is having a Friends & Family event, so if you register with them (for free) you can get 20% off your order. Athleta rarely offers across the board discounts like this, so this is the time to snag these pants if you think you might like them in your summer wardrobe. While they’re a little pricier than some brands, Athleta is my go-to store for workout clothes because they fit great, stand up to hard workouts and make me feel inspired.
I topped the linen pants with a bold pink center-seam sweater from Chico’s. The center-seam sweater comes in other pretty colors, too, and it’s currently marked down. Plus Chico’s is offering a buy more save more deal. Save 25% off one style, 30% on two or 40% on three.
But I’m including other pretty sweater options in the shopping widget, too. I can definitely see these linen pants looking marvelous with this striped ribbed hoodie sweater from Macy’s. It’s already 60% off and you can receive an extra 20% off with code READY.
I completed this cool seaside look with my white sneakers and a wide-brimmed straw hat. My hat is a couple of years old, but if you need to add one to your wardrobe I found a great shell-trimmed straw hat at J.Jill and it’s already marked down and an extra 30% off in the bag.
I kept my jewelry minimal, as I would if I were wearing it at the beach, adding just my Tima stud earrings.
By the way, Athleta also has these linen pants in shorts. The Cabo linen shorts also come in white and hearth rose, which appears to be a rosy brown. And in case you’d like to check out linen pants from other places, I’ve included some other options in the shopping widget below. It may be a little early for most of us to wear linen right now, but I found last summer that linen pants get sold out quickly. And that’s why I wanted to share these Cabo linen wide leg pants with you today when they’re 20% off.

Have you been trying to figure out what God is doing in a certain circumstance in your life? I’ve found that to be a frustrating pursuit. Rarely…make that never…does God do things the way I would do them or even the way my mind would imagine. In fact, the Bible teaches us that God does things beyond our imaginations. We cannot even hope or imagine what God will bring about. Indeed, God works in mysterious ways.
But because we also know that God is good, we can trust that whatever He is doing, He will bring to completion. He is up to something good. God is trustworthy. He is for us, not against us. He is working all things together for our good. Can you cling to that today rather than trying to figure out His ways?
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. ~ Isaiah 55:8-9
Those linen pants look great. I live in Virginia and I’m sure you know our summers are hot, humid and full of mosquitoes. Linen pants are a work horse in the summer. They are cooler than jeans, more protective than shorts, and because I’m outside a lot they keep my legs from being a mosquito buffet. I’ll have to try them out.
Great points! I was really surprised how much I enjoyed wearing linen pants last summer. I opted for them over shorts many days. Thanks for reading Robyn. 🥰
Super cute comfy pants Kay! Yes I would love wearing these to the beach. I have a similar pair in white and you could put them over your bathing suit and then if you stop by for lunch somewhere you feel “dressed”.
Looking forward to seeing what you style next week from Target!
Blessings,
Absolutely! A great swimsuit coverup. I hadn’t thought of that. 😉
I love the scripture and the words you shared in BFMD! That is one of my many favorite scriptures. Kay, you look great in this beautiful outfit. What is your opinion regarding the fabric content of tops to wear with linen pants? Do they also have to be linen? I ordered a pair of light grey linen pants from ON just a couple of days ago, so I’m thinking about what tops I will wear with them. Spring like weather is good for our soul, isn’t it!
Yes! I’m soaking up this spring weather…realizing it can change on a dime. Ha! I think you can wear so many kinds of tops with linen pants. My favorite really is just a simple t-shirt. If your linen pants are full it’s generally a good idea to go a little more fitted with your top. Remember I did a video on wearing linen pants last summer so you might want to go back and check it out for more ideas. https://youtu.be/Y7hCJEFAeqs
I have two pairs of linen pants and you have inspired me to wear them this year. Yesterday I purchased four of the boat neck tshirts from Vineyard Vines – two from the Sankaty selection. I like that it has SPF 50. I can’t wait for them to arrive to get that pop of color into my wardrobe!
Wonderful! Yes I appreciate that feature too. I hope you enjoy them. 😊
Linen looks like a great spring/summer alternative to shorts for those of us with less-than-perfect legs! (Chunky, varicose veins, etc.)It doesn’t look as if the wrinkles that are common for linen clothing are a problem for you. Would you care to comment? Is there a linen alternative that doesn’t wrinkle as much? I am curious if in some future post you would be willing to include other “shorts alternatives” or what used to be called Bermuda shorts, capris, and “pedal pushers”. Are there casual skirts, skorts, etc for warm seasons that aren’t denim that you recommend? And considering all of these, do they fit your category of “modern” or are they outdated? There might be other older women contemplating how to look good in hot weather but shorts seem better suited for younger gals. I am ready to quit wearing shorts but want to look stylish and suit my changing body. I am not going into stores to try things on because of the pandemic, so your posts help me envision what styles that might be possible. Thanks for considering this!
Hi Kerry. I don’t mind the wrinkles at all. It’s just part of the beauty of linen. As for your other requests…YES! Hahaha! I actually do a blog post every summer about what you can wear instead of shorts and last summer I did a video. I’ll do another one this year and I’ve already got new ideas for it. You might want to go to the top menu on my blog, click on Fashion and you’ll see choices for each season. Click on Spring or Summer for previous posts from last year and you can see what I shared in those seasons.
So sorry COVID prevented you from going to St Augustine. That outfit would be perfect for dinner at Cap’s, sitting out by the water at sunset.
Yes it would. We just didn’t want to pick up the virus while traveling and then expose my parents. We’ll get down there next year. 🤞🏻
Hi Kay, love these linen pants. I ordered the chambray in the denim in petite, since I am 5’3″ and I plan on wearing with sandals or tennis shores. I usually don’t order petites because I am long waisted and they cut me in the rise, but think these linen pants will work. I ordered a white linen button up shirt yesterday form J Jill, that you referenced
I think that will be a good coverup un- buttoned with a tee shirt under it. So ready for Spring.
I have been having some anxiety issue, which I never go through. I think it is the Pandemic and all that we have been
going through. I pray God for guidance and your BFMD hit the nail on the head. I have to wait on Him. Thanks Kay
Hi Sherry. I can completely identify. I think this past year – we’re coming up on a year of Covid! – has been difficult for all of us and different ways and anxiety is running rampant among us. Yes, we must learn to rest in God’s sovereignty and goodness. 💕
Hello Kay! I stumbled upon your blog from a link in “Style at a certain age” and I am glad I did. You are inspirational with your style and lifestyle suggestions. Last year my step daughter gave me a pair of linen pants and I fell in love with them, so much so that I bought two more at the end of summer sales. I also live in the Cincinnati area and enjoy reading about your local excursions. In addition I to lead a bible study at my church, right now we are working our way through the book of Acts, a study that I have also written. Thank you for taking the time for your inspiration. I hope you get to enjoy the Cincinnati sunshine today!
Hi Laurie. It’s so nice to meet you. My husband is preaching through Acts right now. Such an interesting book. Full of action! I’m absolutely enjoying the sunshine! I hope you do too! ☀️
I love the book of Acts and the beginnings of the early church, I’m particularly fond of Acts chap, 2 having experienced that very same experience,😊
This reminds me of how much I love me summer pants and drawstring things and straw accessories. Refreshing to look at and pink with grey is one of my favorite color combos. I can’t wait to wear my new pink sandals. I bought them but never got to wear them last year.
Well I hope you have lots of lovely days to wear those pink sandals, Eve. 💕
Kay, I’m a GA gal too. We love our linen!
This scripture is such a comfort to me.
Kay, The Blessing for the Day was outstanding. This scripture really touched me! I don’t wear pants but I do wear long straight linen skirts and shirts. I add to my linen every year. It’s so cool for our hot weather here in Tucson, AZ! Thank you for showing us the pink sweater. This is my color!
You bet! I spent a hot summer in Tucson a few years ago. You’re so right! 💕
Hi Kay-
Just had to share how your influence is spreading! I met my husband at the front door yesterday for our evening walk, and he was wearing his new navy and tan lightweight jacket. He had pulled from his baseball cap collection a perfectly matching navy cap with a tan bill. It looked great! I told him so, and he said that since I was taking more time to pull together how I dressed he thought he could, too. That made me smile and hope it does you, too.
Ahh, that’s so sweet. I love it. Thanks so much for sharing. Did my heart good. 🥰
I also came over from the link on “Style at a certain age” and I’m very happy to have found your blog.
I love linen in the summer as it’s so cool and comfortable. I like fabric between me and what I’m sitting on, and pants fit that bill. The last 2 years I’ve found linen pants at J.Crew outlet. They are very simple with pockets and a cuff. I’ve got the chambray, navy, black and a lovely red color. I am 5’2 and the length starts out longish on me and by the end of the summer they have shrunk even with washing in cold water and hung to dry. Downy wrinkle release spray handles the worse wrinkles but wrinkles are part of the charm. They are not expensive and new colors have come out so I just add to my stash.
Thank you Kay for your practical suggestions and the lesson you share. Your bless my day.
Oh I love this. A wealth of knowledge. I’ll have to try the Downey spray. Sounds like a good idea. Thanks so much for sharing Fran. 🥰
I love these linen pants. The description does not give the “rise” of these pants. Being short waisted, a high rise works better on my body type so just wondering if you measured the rise of these. Linen pants would be a first for me and these are so cute!
Hi Sandy. Just measured them and they are 11”.
Oh Kay…THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing that and I’m excited that they are that high as I’m finding a 10″ rise is what feels best on my short-waisted body type so this will definitely feel comfortable for me.
Kay, I recently found you and am really enjoying your recommendations. I live in the Columbus OH area and it is nice to follow someone from my same climate. Love the linen pants on you. On me, however, I’m short and to the heavy side, so the wrinkles make me feel extra frumpy. I’ll be following for some alternatives. I sprung for some modern sneakers. I found some on Zappos from Rieker with zippers on the side with kind of a bowling shoe look. I have received so many compliments on them from all age groups. Keep the great advice coming.
Hi Karen. Those sneakers sound great. I love zippers on the side. Our son and daughter-in-law live in Columbus. 😊
Hi Kay. I searched my typical shops and found a cute pair of cropped flax colored linen pants at a great price! These will be a nice addition to my spring and summer wardrobe here in North Carolina. I enjoy your blog entries, videos, and BFMD. With your help and ‘Style at a Certain Age’ I’m getting out of a style rut that I’ve been in for many years!
Thank you for featuring pants with a more relaxed fit and looser leg. Elastic waistbands with draw cords seem to be the only style that fit me comfortably, but I always feel like I’m the only one wearing this style, so I feel so out of place all the time. It helps to see you put outfits together with this style pant too. I’ve had diverticulitis surgery (and unfortunately I am currently having another bout of diverticulitis even after the surgery!) so with a GI/stomach issue, and and incisions all over my stomach, tight pants are not an option for me. Thank you Kay for showing a variety of styles for everyone!
Absolutely! I don’t have the problem you do, but I love elastic waist pants. And there are great ways to wear them and look fashionable and pretty. I’m glad you enjoyed the post. 😊
