Happy hump day! Time is flying these days. I can’t believe summer is drawing to a close soon. But most kids have returned to school, college football has kicked off and we’re making Labor Day plans. I thought I better get in my August Favorites before I miss the opportunity!
What are My Favorites?
When I list my favorites each month, I’m sharing the products I’ve actually been using and/or wearing during that month…and loving! Some of these I bought during August, but others have just gotten a lot of play time in this month in particular.
At any rate, these are the products I most enthusiastically recommend. So if you have any questions about them, fire away!
High-Rise Straight-Fit Ankle Jeans
I’ve already worn these high-rise straight-fit ankle jeans in a couple of posts this month, here and here. But more significantly, they’re on constant replay in my personal wardrobe. I have these roomy, soft jeans in a size 29, and I’d say they fit true-to-size.
Why it’s a favorite: Straight fit jeans are really trending right now, and I don’t see that trend diminishing, only accelerating. But it can be a little tricky finding the silhouette that works best for you in this new trend. I’ve discovered that I do best with straight jeans that feature a fuller hip and thigh like these do. I also love the soft denim, the contemporary raw hem and the light denim.
By the way, these jeans may not be on sale today, but I expect Banana Republic to drop their prices again soon, perhaps this weekend. So “favorite” them if you’re interested for sure.
SUPIMA Cotton V-neck T-Shirt in Black
I’m really enjoying having more solid tees in my closet these days. And I’ve been finding all sorts of ways to wear this simple black tee. I picked it up the same day I bought the jeans above.
Why it’s a favorite: I’ve bought black tees before, but this v-neck t-shirt is the best one I’ve owned yet. Now it’s not magic or anything. So don’t get the wrong idea! But I love the v-neckline, the soft SUPIMA cotton, the true black color and the slight curved hemline. Also, it’s just a nice length for me.
I expect this basic but superior black v-neck t-shirt to do heavy duty in my fall wardrobe as an essential (hint: my list of fall wardrobe essentials is coming up soon!).
Book: Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
I like to read a little more fiction than usual during the summer months. I think it has something to do with having participated in summer reading programs at the local library for so many years. Ha!
At any rate, after searching for books to read I came across Little Fire Everywhere by Celeste Ng.
This charming and captivating book is being made into a Hulu limited series, starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. And I think Reese’s summation of the book describes it best.
“To say I love this book is an understatement. It’s a deep psychological mystery about the power of motherhood, the intensity of teenage love, and the danger of perfection. It moved me to tears.” – Reese Witherspoon
Please note, this book is not a Christian fiction book and it does contain some raw language, though not excessive. But I found Little Fires Everywhere through-provoking and hard to put down.
Dior Addict Stellar Shine Lipstick
Somewhere along the way recently, I received a card of sample lipsticks by Dior. The card had four shades of Dior’s Addict Stellar Shine on it, and I fell in love with all of them.
But here’s the kicker. I liked the samples so much I went out and bought a tube. Now y’all, I don’t buy lipstick often. You get so many in gifts with purchases, that I rarely feel the need to buy them. But this was the exception.
Why it’s a favorite: The Dior Addict Stellar Shine Lipstick is a sheer, moist lipstick that goes on so smoothly. I tend to prefer lipsticks that are a little sheer and not so dense. And this one still has plenty of pigmentation. I’ve also found it to stay on and keep my lips moist for hours.
In the sample I tried and loved:
- Be Dior #976
- Wonderful #561
- Tribale #451
- Smile #553
And I liked all of those shades. But I chose to purchase the Dior Addict Stellar Shine Lipstick in a completely different shade: Dior Fortune #769 – shown in the photo above. I thought this deep, rosy pink would be pretty for the fall.
Keranique Hair Regeneration Treatment for Women
A few months ago I decided to order a set of Keranique Hair Regneration products on the Home Shopping Network. Ha! I’d never ordered anything before from there. But I’d become pretty frustrated with my thinning hair, and the infomercial spoke to me. Ha!
I failed to take any “before photos.” Who wants to take pictures of their thinning hair? Well, I don’t. But then again I take photos almost weekly, huh. And maybe you can’t tell that my hair is thinning, but I can. In fact, I think hair loss is a common theme among women my age.
Why it’s a favorite: This formula contains two percent minoxidil, the only FDA-approved ingredient proven to regrow hair, in a convenient, easy-to-use spray application. I don’t know that the other products have really helped, but the easy precision sprayer, show above, contains the minoxidil, and it seems to help if applied twice daily, as directed. I also like that the spray is formulated without parabens, sulfates and phthalates.
Vine Mixed Media Button Down Shell
I picked up this mixed media shell when I was in Georgia, and it was on sale. Of course, as I write this blog post it’s not on sale. But if you like it as much as I do, “favorite” it because Loft generally drops their prices around holidays.
Why it’s a favorite: This simple little top has just turned out to be one of those go-to shirts because it layers so well under third pieces (blue denim jacket, kimono, cardigan, white denim jacket, utility jacket, etc.) And at this time of year I like to layer lightweight pieces for a transition-into-fall look.
I wore the top in this blog post. And I have it in a small.
Vegan Suede Hip Belt in Leopard Print
I purchased this vegan suede hip belt at Banana Republic when I bought the jeans and black t-shirt. I was drawn to the darker leopard print in this belt.
You’ll see me wearing this belt often this fall and winter, but I’ve already shared it in this post and this one. I have a size Medium.
Why it’s a favorite: I like the darker leopard print in this belt, which seems to be trending. I wear a lot of black, so I think it will complement those black pieces well.
Adidas Edge Lux 3 Running Shoes
I bought these Adidas Edge Lux 3 running shoes in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale when they were a little cheaper. But even at full price, they’re considerably less than I’d been paying for running shoes.
Why it’s a favorite: I do love the contemporary, mesh cage of this shoe. And surprisingly, it supports my foot well. It’s made for indoor and outdoor running, and I do both. This shoe goes on easily, stays put on your foot and functions well for me. I have a size 9.5, which is my normal shoe size.
I know running shoes are a highly personal thing. Some great brands don’t work at all for me, and I’m sure it’s the same for you. In fact, I’d never worn Adidas shoes before. But if you order from Nordstrom your shipping is free and returns are, too. So you can try it on and walk around in your home a bit before you make the final verdict.
Textured Stripe Kimono Cardigan in rosy peach
I couldn’t find a great picture online of this kimono, so I’m just showing you some from previous blog posts. In fact, I’m wearing other August favorites in these photos, as well.
I find myself wearing this simple kimono cardigan often now, but I expect to wear it into the fall. I have the kimono in a size x-small/small, so keep that in mind. Oh, and it comes in charcoal grey and soft oatmeal beige, too.
Why it’s a favorite: I like the soft drape of this simple kimono. The knit fabric feels like it’s a good quality and the color is very versatile, at least for my current wardrobe. Kimono wraps are still trending and they’re a great third piece during transitional seasons.
Well, there you have it! Those are the products I’m really wearing and using…and that I love. Let me know if you have any questions. And share with us anything that’s proven to be a favorite in your closet, makeup bag or nightstand, too.

Blessed for My Day
I’ve always been so very impressed with Daniel from the biblical book of the same name. Not only was he wise, strong in character and faithful to God, but he somehow managed to live in a foreign culture and rise to the top of the government with the respect of those who had captured him.
Let’s take a cue from Daniel. Let’s resolve to live contrary to the ways of the world. But let’s also, like Daniel, choose to treat the people of this world with respect and grace. We don’t have to be bullies in order to abide by the principles set forth in God’s Word. Instead, we can demonstrate God’s goodness and love while we walk to the beat of a different drummer.
But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself. ~ Daniel 1:8
?Oh NO!! I ALMOST did that exact same thing recently. I had put my phone in my back pocket (which I’ve never done before….but I see all of these other people doing it so I thought..why not?). When I went to the restroom I forgot, naturally, that it was there and sure enough…..it fell out of my pocket but FORTUNATELY right in front of the toilet on the floor….not IN the toilet! I vowed right then and there I would never do that again!! My husband did it though and we had to take his to a phone doctor because we didn’t have any rice either. I keep it on hand now though!! Ha! Let us know if the rice works! Really sorry that happened to you and hope it’s a quick fix for you. Love your AUGUST FAVORITES list! Many of those I would love to have but have pretty much ‘shot my wad’ these past few weeks…..getting ready for Fall! I will favorite some of them though, in case they go on sale.
I’m dropped my phone into the toilet twice but I think I have now learned my lesson and I keep it out of my back pocket!
I actually now carry an old-fashion address book in my bag with all my really important phone numbers in it. It just takes up a little space but I feel better knowing I could at least get ahold of a family member in case of an emergency!
Hope you are enjoying this lovely late August here in Cincy. Don’t get used to it ? we call this “false fall”.
Deb
So sorry about your phone! I’ve dropped mine into water as well, though not the toilet ? A good alternative to rice is silica gel. When I buy a product that has the little packets of silica gel, I save a few and keep them in a sandwich bag. When my phone took the plunge, I dried it off and put it in the bag with several packets (still in their wrapping) and left it for a couple of days. It worked! Yay!
I hope your phone recovers soon. I’m completely reliant on mine—as are most people I know. There does seem to be more time in the day without it though. Or maybe the day just seems longer ?
Oh no! I am so sorry that you dropped your phone in water and that it’s still out of commission. I sure hope that y’all can bring it back to life without having to go to the phone store. You have some very nice August favorites. A few years ago, I came upon a square neck Kim Rogers tee (Belk) that is made out of a thicker fabric that I really like. Somehow I got a bleach spot on the black one that is a great basic, so I have been searching in store and online for a replacement, but couldn’t find it. The other week I went to the store to pick up an order. They were having a huge clearance sale, so I found my way to the $7.99 racks, and was super excited to find a replacement black tee in my size. I prefer a square neck over a v neck due to my skin challenges. Have a blessed day!
I really like your monthly favorites post. August favorites has such a diverse group of things. I enjoyed the book Little Fires Everywhere too. I followed it with a book called A Man Called Ove which was a sweet, entertaining book. I think I need to try the Keranique .
Yes, unfortunately I had mine it my pocket
and down it went! I had to run out and
buy rice! I completely filled a large ziploc
bag, totally submerged it and let it to do
It’s magic overnight! Fortunately for me it
worked! It also taught be a “never to be
forgotten “ lesson!
