My Current Over 50 Skincare Routine

Welcome to Dressed for My Day! I’m so tired of trying on clothes as my orders have been coming in from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale that I thought we’d switch gears and talk beauty today. While I shared my current makeup routine and products in this recent post and my holy grail beauty products in this post, I haven’t told you about my current over 50 skincare routine. So let’s talk skincare for the over 50 woman.

This is not a sponsored post. All opinions stated are voluntary and genuine. However, I do have a special offer for you at the bottom of the post, thanks to the generosity of my Mary Kay skincare & beauty consultant.

a few words about Mary Kay

While not all of the products I’m sharing today are from Mary Kay, most are. I was first introduced to Mary Kay when I was fresh out of college, and I used the products faithfully for many years with great results. But moving around as we did, I lost touch with my Mary Kay beauty consultant at some point and it just got easier to pick up alternative products at the store.

But in recent years I began to crave the reliability of Mary Kay skincare and makeup again. I had always found it to work well on my skin, and I also like the premise of the brand. It’s a company created by a woman and developed to help women succeed in business.

So when I moved to Cincinnati and discovered that one of the women in our new church is a Mary Kay consultant, I knew I wanted to give the line a try again. Sheryl Carns has been so gracious to help me find the products that work best for me. There’s just something about having another woman in your corner when it comes to skincare and makeup! Especially as we get older.

So, like I said, I do use a few products that are not part of the Mary Kay brand, but the bulk of my current skincare routine is from this iconic brand. And I’m loving it!

about my skin

I’ve really been blessed with easy to manage skin. I’d say it’s normal to dry, depending on the climate. And while I certainly have some damage from all of those years lying out in the sun, I have been washing my face twice daily and using good skincare products and practices as long as I can remember.

My skin is not highly sensitive to anything, and I rarely break out with blemishes.

But I am 56-years-old, so I have many of the issues common to women in my age bracket. I have a few dry patches, wrinkles around my eyes, feathering around my lips and other little “things” (what are those!!!) that just pop up here and there to keep me humble. Oh my.

my morning skincare routine

Because I don’t want to use up my good Mary Kay TimeWise® Age Minimize 3D® 4-in-1 Cleanser, and because I generally wash my face in the shower in the mornings, I use Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser most mornings.

Cetaphil

I appreciate that the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser is mild, fairly fragrance free and non-irritating to my eyes.

After my shower, I towel off and, while my face is still damp to the touch, I immediately apply one squirt of Timeless Skin Care 20% Vitamin C, Ferulic Acid & Vitamin E Formula.

Vitamin C
Timeless Skin Care 20% Vitamin C, Ferulic Acid & Vitamin E Formula

I do think that, of everything I use in my skincare regimen, this Timeless Skin Care 20% Vitamin C, Ferulic Acid & Vitamin E Formula has made the most noticeable difference in my skin. It has brightened my skin, smoothed it out and diminished age spots.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that fights free radicals generated from sunshine and pollution. It helps protect the DNA and collagen in our skin. But it also helps brighten the surface of our skin and reduce discoloration, fine lines and wrinkles.

I’ve done a good bit of research on vitamin C formulas and what to look for. I understand that, because vitamin C formulas can oxidize and lose their effectiveness easily, you want to look for a product that:

  • absorbs quickly and easily into the skin
  • has a dispenser that protects it from light, which can render it ineffective
  • has a dispenser that protects it from air, which can cause it to oxidize

The Timeless Skin Care 20% Vitamin C, Ferulic Acid & Vitamin E Formula checks all of those boxes and goes on easily.

DFMD Tip – After applying skin serums to your face, dab any remaining product onto the backs of your hands or your decolletage to improve the appearance of those areas. My hands look 10 years younger since I began doing this.

While the Vitamin C serum is setting, I apply a very small pea-size dot of Mary Kay TimeWise Age Minimize 3D Eye Cream to my eye lids, up to my brows and under my eyes.

DFMD Tip: I always use the ring finger of my left (non-dominant) hand to apply products to my eye area. This is your weakest finger, so you’re less likely to apply too much pressure.

This Mary Kay eye cream brightens the eye area immediately and keeps it moisturized for 12 hours. I find it also helps my eye makeup stay set and go on more smoothly. It only takes a very small pea-size dot of this product to cover both eyes.

Mary Kay TimeWise® Age Minimize 3D® Day Cream SPF 30 Broad Spectrum Sunscreen

After my Vitamin C product has set for a few minutes and my face feels dry to the touch, I apply the Mary Kay TimeWise® Age Minimize 3D® Day Cream SPF 30 Broad Spectrum Sunscreen. I like using a moisturizer with sunscreen in it because I’m more prone to be consistent about wearing it that way.

DFMD Tip: Don’t know your skin type or what kind of skin care regimen you need? You can use the Mary Kay Skin Analyzer to help diagnose the best skin care for your skin. The app is free and easy to use. Download from the Apple Store or Google Play. Sheryl said she would gladly help you if you need further assistance. You can reach her here.

I apply the Day Cream SPF 30 Broad Spectrum Sunscreen all over my face and neck. I use a very small amount of product, maybe a dollop the size of a small butter pea. Once my moisturizer is set, I’m ready to apply my makeup. You can learn more about my makeup routine here.

my nighttime skincare regimen

I wash my face every night before going to bed. Every night. Every single night.

First, to safely remove my eye makeup, I use the Mary Kay® Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover. I just dampen a cotton pad and hold it to my closed eye for few seconds. Then I gently, carefully remove my eye makeup.

Mary Kay® Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover

I like this oil-free formula and how gently it works. My photo is of a travel size because my larger container is almost out. The regular 3.75 fl. oz. has lasted me about six months.

Next I use the TimeWise® Age Minimize 3D® 4-in-1 Cleanser to thoroughly clean my entire face and neck. I don’t, however, use the cleanser on my eye area because it does contain tiny, soft micro-beads that help gently exfoliate your skin as you cleanse.

TimeWise® Age Minimize 3D® 4-in-1 Cleanser

By the way, Mary Kay’s exclusive, patent-pending Age Minimize 3D® Complex is in every TimeWise Miracle Set 3D® product, including the cleanser. The complex features encapsulated resveratrol, vitamin B3 and an age-defying peptide. All of the products leave my skin feeling very soft, moisturized and refreshed.

I had always used a toner or freshner in the past to get up any makeup or residue that the cleanser didn’t remove from my skin. But when I tried this unnecessary step after cleansing with the TimeWise® Age Minimize 3D® 4-in-1 Cleanser, nothing showed up on the cotton pad. The little exfoliating beads in the cleanser really help it to completely but gently clean your skin.

After patting my skin dry, I simply apply the TimeWise® Age Minimize 3D® Night Cream, which moisturizes continuously for twelve hours.

once or twice a week

I do use a few other products on my skin just once or twice a week.

A couple of times each week, instead of using the Vitamin C serum, I apply the Advanced Clinicals Retinol Cream to my face, neck and the backs of my hands. I had been using this product daily, but I decided it was a little strong for daily use. But I feel like I get the benefits of this product with occasional use.

Advanced Clinicals Retinol Cream

Retinol is considered to be the number one Dermatologist recommended skin care ingredient. It is known to diminish the look of deep wrinkles, fine lines and sun damage while boosting collagen production to help with firming. This cream visibly restores volume to areas prone to sagging and wrinkles. The Aloe Vera in the product defends against visible redness and irritation. While Green Tea and Chamomile guard against environmental damage and reduce puffiness.

Microdermabrasion Set
TimeWise® Microdermabrasion Plus Set

I also use the Mary Kay TimeWise® Microdermabrasion Plus Set once or twice a week for greatly improved skin texture. My skin always feels so much smoother after using the Microdermabraion Refine and the Pore Minimizer. But more importantly, there is a significant difference in how well my makeup goes on, looks and stays on after using this exfoliating system.

DFMD Tip: Be very careful when using this or any other microdermabrasion system. The exfoliation is built into the product, so there’s no need to scrub. Just gently rub it in for a minute or so, then rinse thoroughly. After rinsing and dabbing your skin dry, apply the pore minimizer to calm and comfort your skin.

a great deal for you!

Blessed for My Day

Today may we take advantage of every opportunity to give the Lord a little glory. Let’s tell others how He comforts us, guides us through difficult seasons, equips us for hard things and infuses us with courage when we are shaking in our sandals. While we may be tempted to blow our own horn, let’s sound the praise for our God instead.

And as we are busy about sharing the goodness of God, may He find us faithful and commendable. Let’s trust that He will lift us up at the right time and in a way that ultimately is healthy and honorable. We don’t have to elevate ourselves; He will position us in the best place possible to do a little eternal good.

“Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends. ~ 2 Corinthians 10:17-18

xoxo, Kay

  1. Hi Kay…..your story about your Mary Kay products is just like my story! When we moved to FL in 1986 and where I worked a lady there sold Mary Kay…..I used it for 20 years until we moved. Since then I have not used it but truly miss it. I am going to reach out to Sheryl.

I am also ordering the serum and retinol you suggested.

    Thank you for the tips.
