We’re getting oh so close to Christmas. If you’re lucky enough to be able to gather with anyone during the holidays, I’m providing a little style inspiration for your party-ready outfits. But even if you, like me, will be celebrating Christmas at home with only your spouse, I think it might be a good idea to dress up a little now and again. Dressing up is part of the party experience. Is it not? And even if you’re celebrating with a party of two, you can get in the mood with one of these pretty in plaid outfits for the holidays.
This post is not sponsored by Talbots, but indeed everything I’m showing is from Talbots. That’s because when we shot these photos I thought I might use it for my Talbots collaboration, but then went another direction in this previous post.
I’ve been eyeing tartan plaids for years, but hadn’t yet taken the plunge. But since I’ve noticed that they come back around every single year, I’ve decided it’s worth it to purchase a pair of black watch tartan plaid velveteen pants. My plan is to wear these every year, especially at the holidays, but really throughout the winter.
Unfortunately, as of Sunday evening availability of these pants are down to one size, and my bet is they may be sold out by today. So I’m linking to lots of other options. That said, there must be a lot of women wearing plaid this holiday season, because the pickings are thin in all of the tartan plaid pants and skirts I’m sharing in my shopping widget, too.
Here I’ve paired my black watch tartan plaid velveteen pants with a Kelly green cashmere sweater. The sweater is also no longer available in this color unfortunately. But this button cuff cashmere sweater is a nice substitute.
I kept my jewelry refined and traditional, but you could certainly go a different direction and add more bling. I chose to wear my classic gold hoops, a tassel chain link necklace and a simple gold bangle (substitute).
My blue suede pumps are from a few years back, but these pumps are so similar. And these indigo blue suede Edison bow flats would achieve the same look.
If you’re looking for a black watch plaid pant, I suggest checking out these from J.Crew. I love the kickout crop silhouette and the bi-stretch wool fabric. Right now they’re fairly well stocked.
Because the black watch plaid velveteen pants at Talbots are about sold out, I created an equally charming look with these red classic tartan plaid pants. You can see it below.
I just got the black cashmere turtleneck sweater and I’m wondering why I didn’t have one before. I wore it to church yesterday with these black pants and my camel coat. So chic.
Now let’s check out my second outfit with the black watch tartan plaid velveteen pants.
Really all I did was switch out the green cashmere sweater for an indigo blue ribbed turtleneck sweater. (By the way, this ribbed turtleneck sweater also comes in a similar green to my cashmere turtleneck.) But I think the look is quite different, more subdued, but still very classy.
I asked James to zoom in close on the photo above because I wanted you to see the blue, green and black in the black watch plaid. But it’s also a great detail shot of the ribbed turtleneck.
As I said, I’m really bummed that these pants are basically sold out. But I do have a lot of other options for you in the shopping widget below. If you like the colors, you might want to check out Talbots’ dashing plaid Hampshire ankle pants. And if you’re open to or partial to red and navy, I’d steer you to their Merry Tartan Hampshire ankle pants.
I can envision wearing these tartan plaid velveteen pants with a chambray shirt, a solid black sweater, my classic white button up shirt or even a pretty silk blouse.
For the second look I topped my ribbed turtleneck sweater with my green puffer vest. But of course both of these looks would be great under a classic wool coat in black, navy or camel as well. Even a baby blue or green coat would work beautifully over these plaid pants.
Do you have any tartan plaid in your wardrobe? I think it’s a wise investment if you’re into it. While it’s most traditional to wear the tartan plaids during November or December, you absolutely can continue to wear them through the winter.

Can you even imagine seeing an angel? Ha! I scare easily. My family will tell you that I plain out scream anytime someone just walks up behind me…in my own home…even when I know they are in the home with me. Yeah, that’s me. So while I’d like to think that I’d bow low in reverence and awe in reaction to an angelic visit, I’m pretty sure I’d be screaming.
I don’t know if these brave shepherd guys screamed, but we do know they were filled with fear. That reminds me that while God has indeed invited us to draw near to Him through a relationship with that babe in a manager, we’d best not assume there’s anything casual about that invitation. We serve a holy God, high and lifted up. He is the almighty God, the Creator and sustainer of all that is. Oh my. Because of Jesus’ birth and death and resurrection, we do not have to be scared of God…or His heavenly hosts. But we do need to worship Him in awe and with a holy fear.
O holy night, the stars are brightly shining
It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth
Long lay the world, in sin and error pining
‘Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth
A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks, a new and glorious mornFall on your knees
O hear the angels’ voices
O night divine
O night when Christ was born
O night divine
O night
O night divine ~ O Holy Night
And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. ~ Luke 2:9
I’m easily scared as well. Thank you for your cute outfit ideas.
Oh my. Then you get it! 🤪
I don’t think there is a plaid more festive and classic than a black watch plaid. I have liked plaids, especially black watch since I was a young girl. The way you styled your outfits is exactly spot on and you look so chic in them.
I am easily scared also. I like to think that I would have had the appropriate response if I were present on that hillside with the shepherds. But, the truth is I probably would have been too afraid to even register a sound.
Your insights into scripture makes God’s Word real and easy to keep in the heart.
Have a wonderful day!
Suzanne
Thanks for sharing, Suzanne. I’m so glad I finally purchased these black watch plaid pants. I don’t know what I’ve been waiting for! 🖤💙
I came to your blog through Beth. You are darling and I enjoy the outfits. I am a fashion buff and my look these days is SO casual but it is still fun to see outfits out together. I absolutely LOVE the devotional at the end of your blog. Thank you for sharing!!
Welcome Sandi. I’m so glad Beth introduced us. Thanks for sharing. I hope you continue to enjoy my posts and videos. 🥰
I am also a huge fan of all tartan plaids, especially for the holidays. For some who may shy away from red plaid clothing, try an accessory. I broke down and bought a cute red plaid Dooney and Bourke bag for this season and I’m using it nonstop!! Such happy plaids! Thanks for your great blog, I read it every day!
Yes, accessories are a great option. Thanks for sharing Sue. 🥰
I wore a black watch plaid dress for my kindergarten school picture. I saw the velvet black watch pant in the catalog and really liked it, but I have their plain blue velveteen pant from 4-5 years ago, and I have way too much clothing in my closet as it is. After seeing you wear them, I kind of regret not getting them, but I also know something will have to go to make room for them, and I have gotten to the point that I like everything in my closet {finally!}. But I just wanted to let you know how great you look, and what a great job you have done in curating your closet.
And my husband scared me just this weekend even though I heard him coming up the stairs, I guess I didn’t expect him to be passing the room I was in when I was coming out. So, yes, I am with you on that!
Hahaha! Happens to me all the time. And yes, I’m totally with you on holding the reins on your curated closet. Enjoy what you have!
I LOVE tartan plaid. Part of my Scottish heritage. I really like all your looks today! Thanks.
You bet! I’m part Scottish, too. 😉
Happy Monday Kay….
I really like the navy sweater with the button detail. Also love the sleeves get tighter near the wrist, so nice. So my fav. Top is this navy with the plaid slacks.
And I long for the day we can gather as families and friends during the Holidays to see each one dressed up…..isn’t that who we really want to see us😉 (of corse our hubby’s too).
Blessings,
Absolutely. I’m longing for those days, too, Holly. Thanks for sharing.
It’s been a tough year. Anything to distract us for a few minutes helps. You have me going through my closet matching up the things I already own. I love both looks but my fav is the navy sweater with pants and the added green vest. That is a great look. I’m not into padded vest because I’m top heavy but I do love this look. If you are a flatie pattie, you are soooo blessed.
Hahaha! I am indeed a flatie Pattie! You crack me up. Yeah, it felt like a curse for so many years, but now that I’m in my fifties I’m quite grateful that gravity doesn’t have quite as much to grab hold of. 😉 Thanks for sharing Eve. 🥰
Lovely looks, Kay. I love the black watch plaid and malachite cashmere sweater. Yes, I’ve been amazed this year at how quickly the great sales have depleted the stocks of cashmere and so much more. I’m so glad I shopped early like you did to get the pieces I wanted. The cashmere and long red cardigan and holly embroidered tee I purchased are all gone in my size…or completely. Thanks, sincerely, for helping me to get shopping early!
Yes! I’ve been amazed too. I’m thinking that they’re carrying a little less inventory this year due to the pandemic but I also remember that when I worked at Talbots one Christmas we did begin to sell out of some cashmere items. So I do hope I’m helpful in letting you ladies know about sales so that you can get what you want to have for a season. I hate just pushing sales and I don’t want to be seen that way. But I do want to be a resource for when you’re ready to shop. 😉
i just subscribed, sat down to read the very first post from you–and I’m wearing the same plaid pants! It think this is an omen you are going to be a great source for me. I also wear these pants with my faux green leather jacket as well as a green sweater tank and double breasted navy blazer. These pants are so versatile, I glad I bought them before they sold out in my size.
Oh my! Those combos sound beautiful! I’m looking forward to wearing them multiple ways each year. Thanks so much for subscribing. And thanks for sharing! 🥰
Ha! I startle easily, as well! Love your look today, Kay. O Holy Night is my favorite Christmas hymn.
Mine, too, Terry. I love the line “the soul felt its worth.” 💙
So classy, Kay. you look stunning!
I had to giggle.., I’m styling the black watch pants tomorrow on the blog. Wink.
Hahaha! We are truly two peas in a pod!
I have always wanted to have a pair of these slacks. They came back in stock in my size. Love them and your blog. I think I am going to style with the blue sweater and black heel booties. Thank you for the inspiration.
Oh how wonderful. I’m glad you were able to get them. 🙌🏻
