Shoes for Early Fall

I think we’ve easily still got a few more weeks at least of warm weather in Ohio, but I’m definitely excited to start transitioning my wardrobe to fall. And when you’re ready to take those first steps toward your autumn wardrobe, simply choosing more fall-like footwear is an easy move in the right direction. Today I’m sharing some shoes for early fall.

Instead of breaking down the shoes into price categories, like I did in yesterday’s fall handbags post, I’m categorizing them by style. But I am providing selections in a full range of prices. You’ll find a few pairs of shoes for as low as $25 and others in the $300s. But most of the shoes I’m sharing are moderately priced. I only recommend brands that I’m familiar with and have worn myself. So, while some shoes are definitely more comfortable and wearable than others (you really do get what you pay for with the shoes I’m sharing), you can absolutely find great-looking early fall shoes to fit your budget.

Loafers

While loafers are classics that never go out of style completely, this year they are “having a moment.” Classic leather loafers will certainly look very stylish, but patent leather and lug sole varieties will look even more modern and cutting edge.

Wear White Socks for Impact

I generally wear my loafers without any socks, especially in the early fall. But later, as the weather cools, if you do want to wear socks I suggest contrasting socks. I know that seems a little odd to some, but I’m seeing this everywhere in the fashion magazines and online.

But choose loafers that fit your lifestyle and personal style aesthetic. I think these should be some of the hardest working shoes in your wardrobe, if you enjoy loafers. So definitely select comfortable ones. I can highly recommend my Everlane Modern Loafers, shown just above but also available in black, as well as Paul Green loafers.

Other Flats

Of course, you could opt for more feminine flats, too. I like having both masculine inspired loafers and feminine flats in my wardrobe. While ballet flats are still “in,” the more modern version has a squared off toe rather than the traditional rounded toe. In other flats we’re seeing pointy toe and squared off versions.

Silk Scarf with Blazer

I’ve recently become a brand ambassador for Sarah Flint shoes. These exquisite Italian made shoes are extremely comfortable and classically beautiful, so you can wear them with confidence for years. Just a few years ago these shoes sold in the finer department stores such as Barney’s for $700+, but Sarah took them out of the stores and chose to offer them directly to consumers for half that price.

But Sarah Flint shoes are still pricey. I will tell you, though, that while I was gifted one pair (my Sacchetto ballet flats shown below) I then turned around and purchased the Sarah Flint Natalie on my own dime. The investment was worth it to me.

I’m also a brand ambassador for Ally Shoes and Calla Shoes (for women with bunions). I don’t own any of Ally’s flats, only their heels (which are AMAZING). But you can find their flats HERE and receive 10% off your first pair with code KAYFLATS. I appreciate that Ally Shoes makes their flats with a .6″ heel for optimal comfort and ease of wear.

At Calla, where they specialize in shoes with a wider toe box and other adaptations for women with bunions, use code KAY20 for 20% off an order over $159.

But of course, I’ve got lots of other more reasonably priced flats in the shopping widget below.

Mules, Slides & Clogs

Other great options in early fall, especially for elevated casual looks, are mules, slides and clogs. What’s the difference?

Sometimes it’s just a matter of what the brand decides to call them. But generally mules have a closed toe.

Whereas slides generally have an open toe. You can find slides and mules with heels or without.

The key for transitioning to fall is to look for these slip-on style shoes in colors and fabrics of the season. While leather is always a great option, especially in black, cognac or brown, suede also signals fall nicely. Or you could opt for animal prints or embossing.

And of course clogs are, well, clogs. They have that chunkier vibe with a closed toe. I don’t own any and I’m not sure I will. I love them. But I just haven’t seen the ones I want to try. I’m very much determined to wear on comfortable shoes I absolutely love, so I’ve gotten pretty picky. But you might find some that resonate with you in the shopping widget below. I’ve filled it with great options in all three slip on categories.

Fashion Sneakers

Of course you can wear fashion sneakers year round. So you don’t have to put away your leather sneakers especially. But it may be time to opt for suede, corduroy or leather sneakers over those canvas selections.

Meet Sadie + Jane

I’ll definitely still be wearing my white Madewell sidewalk sneakers this fall. They’re classic and comfortable, and so versatile. But I also purchased a pair of P448 more bedazzled sneakers for fun.

Also the retro trainers are still trending.

And while I’ve heard that the wedge sneakers are going out of style, if these really work for you keep wearing them. No, they’re not the newest sneaker on the block anymore. But if this wedge silhouette and the heightened heel help your overall look, you can still find these in the stores.

I found lots of great sneakers in fall tones, too. You’ll find sneakers in every price range below.

Pumps & Slingbacks

As we transition into fall it’s also a nice time to change up our nicer footwear. I like to transition out of my open toe heels into slingbacks and pumps. I also begin wearing footwear in suede more. And I choose deeper richer tones. But yes, you can absolutely wear your nude colored pumps and other shoes year-round.

Ally Kitten Heel Pumps

Ally shoes recently came out with a new kitten heel, which is a perfect height heel for many of us. It gives your shoe that ultra feminine look, but it’s such a comfortable height at just 2″. Don’t forget to use code KAYHEELS for $40 off your first pair of heels. I also have and love the Bossy Beige classic pumps and a pair of suede block heel pumps from Ally. They all fit beautifully and I can wear them for hours without tiring at all.

Blessed for My Day

Because I’m so concerned about the spirit of fear that I have seen settle upon the world in recent months, I want to continue thinking about that in this space for a while. It’s natural to fear. That’s surely why the Bible addresses fear and anxiety no fewer than 365 times from cover to cover. God knows it is our hearts’ propensity to fear what we do not understand or fully control.

But we are called to live a supernaturally empowered life. We don’t have to fear, not because we have all the answers, know the future or feel in control. We don’t have to fear because we have a God who is good and who hears our every cry for help. When fear comes upon us – and it will – we must choose to turn to God in prayer.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. ~ Philippians 4:6

  1. Wondering if the converse platform from Nordstrom sale is a transition shoe? Did you keep the ones you bought?

  2. I live in the deep south so autumn is still very warm down here! I’ve ordered a new pair of haurachi’s which are one step away from an open sandal. I ordered cognac color which should go nicely with blue jeans.

  3. I love the look of loafers, but I have very narrow heels, so I’ve not yet found a brand that fit my needs. But Frye makes a lovely slip-on sneaker in suede and leather which works as a casual substitute, because the collar is padded around the ankle which helps keep in place. I also love my low slip-on mules from Talbots with the chain detail to give a loafer vibe, but a bit dressier. The olive green suede is perfect for fall and pops nicely with any neutral base. I’m not ready to give up on my Blondo black suede wedge sneakers! They’re comfy and waterproof and garner many compliments.
