Happy Friday! It is Friday, isn’t it? I’ve been confused all week, what with the holiday on Monday and me posting a video on Thursday. Hahaha! Well, let’s see if we can return to a little normalcy and routine today. I’m continuing our Oh So Pulled Together mini-series and posting the third of my seven style formulas. Today we’re learning how to pull off a Shoes On, Show Off! style formula with panache.

Style Formula 3 Shoes On Show Off

Style Formula #3 – Shoes On, Show Off!

I hope my title hasn’t thrown you. Basically what I’m trying to convey is “you got your bright colored shoes on…now show them off!” The formula looks like this:

1 Pair of Showy Shoes + Everything Else Pared Down = 1 Stunning Look

Style Formula 3 Shoes On Show Off
red suede pumps (available in many other colors, some on sale) // black ankle jeans // cashmere wrap sweater (49% off & in other colors) // necklace (customized here) // similar bracelet // similar black stud earrings // shoulder bag

I decided months ago when I compiled my Wardrobe Wish List that I wanted to add a pair of red pumps to my wardrobe. I’d noticed several outfits in Pinterest created around colorful shoes, and I thought red pumps would be perfect for my wardrobe neutrals, which are black, grey, navy and brown.

Red Pumps with black jeans and sweater

I bought these red suede pumps on sale at Nordstrom. I can’t remember if they were in the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale or in a Price Match, but they’re no longer marked down. However, these Marc Fisher pumps are marked down in other colors, including a drop dead gorgeous orange.

red pumps and black outfit

I know this all dark grey look appears a little heavy right now to our eyes, since we’re still accustomed to seeing summertime brights and lights. But come late fall or winter, this monochromatic outfit with just a splash of red will feel and look oh so chic.

cashmere wrap sweater

I was delightfully surprised to discover that my cashmere wrap sweater in pewter twist is still available and, more importantly, still marked down under $75. I purchased it during Everlane’s “early Covid sale” (that’s my name for it; not theirs). It’s available in a few other shades, too, including a true black. I’m wearing a TTS medium.

black ankle jeans and red suede pumps

I’m wearing the black slim ankle jeans from Talbots, but as you can see they look more like a dark grey. They’re definitely supposed to be ankle jeans, but even at 5’8″ they hit me well below the ankle. So I just grabbed my good sewing scissors and cut them off to a more appropriate length. You want your ankle jeans to hit right at or above your ankle bones. And since a raw hem is very “in,” I really like the effect.

These are my TTS 8. The black ankle jeans also come in petite, long and curvy fit regular and petite sizes.

The keys to pulling off the Shoes On, Show Off! style formula are:

  • keep everything else pared down and simple. Can you add a splash of color in your earrings or with a scarf or handbag? Sure, if you’d like. These aren’t rules. Fashion should be fun. Do what you like.
  • choose shoes in a color that makes you happy. Since you’re not wearing them close to your face, you don’t have to worry about whether they’re “your color” or not.

  • consider wearing a favorite neutral in the rest of your outfit. Colorful shoes look great with navy, black, brown, camel, white or grey.
  • consider wearing a monochromatic look, other than your shoes. Let your shoes hog the spotlight on this one.
  • if you wear a red, pink or orange shoe, add a corresponding splash of color with your lipstick and/or nail polish.
  • choose a colorful shoe in the style that works best for you. You can wear a colorful flat, loafer, mule, pump or even sneaker.

Blessed for My Day

Do you have ears to hear? That’s a question I must ask myself often. If I want to learn and understand, even to a limited capacity, the things of God, I must cultivate a teachable spirit.

We can develop a teachable spirit by asking God for one. We can also be more teachable by having a daily practice of confession and repentance. Finally, we develop a more teachable spirit as we spend more time consistently in God’s Word, asking Him to change us through the reading of Scripture.

Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? ~ John 3:11-12

  1. I really like this look, Kay! I have some colored shoes that I enjoy wearing, but I’ve approached what I wear them with in a very different way than what you suggest. I am going to give your suggestion a try and see if resonates with me. I will always remember where I was on 9/11, 19 years ago, like I remember where I was when the shuttle exploded. My stepson is a fire fighter and I thank God that he has remained safe. God bless all first responders and God bless America!

  2. Good morning, I’m such a person that sticks to neutral colors, but, I like your suggestion of adding color to shoes. I enjoyed your video yesterday and your new hairstyle. Thank you for sharing these ideas and lineup styles for fall. I remember 9/11. My prayers go out to all. 🌷

  3. I went to refill my coffee this morning and found my husband lounged on the couch looking through a magazine. I asked him if he had today off and he replied, “It’s Saturday.” I hated to do it, but I had to burst his bubble. He said I ruined his perfectly planned day of leisure. LOL – Everyone is confused about what day it is.
    Love those red shoes.

  4. There is something special about red shoes. A few years ago I bought a pair of red suede loafers (i can no longer wear heels). Every time I wear them I get a least 1 compliment. Enjoy your heels!

  5. I have animal print and metallic shoes but only one pair in a bright color. They are red canvas shoes. I do own a pair of burgundy sandals with pink designs . I love your light blue sneakers. I can see where I would wear them so I think that’s my next purchase. Heels are stunning but the ground is hard. 😬

  6. I have some red flats I bought in the spring and I haven’t worn them for a while. This makes me excited to get them out of the closet!! 🙂

    1. YESSS!!! I totally agree, Sharon! I just bought a pair of burgundy suede pumps from Spring Step and I feel magical whenever I wear them!
