Talbots Friends & Family Try-On Session

Hi gals! Today’s post is especially for all my Talbots shoppers. I know many of you love and appreciate Talbots’ classic designs and tailoring as well as the quality of their clothing. While they may be a little pricier than some other retailers, I do find that I keep their clothing in my closet for years while I purge other brands within a season. So price per wear, I find Talbots‘ clothing to be a worthy purchase. Anyhow! Today begins open shopping for Talbots’ Friends & Family Sale, so I’m sharing my recent try-on session featuring a few of their new arrivals.

SIZING

I’m 5’8″ and weigh about 150. I have an X or hourglass shape and fairly even proportions. I generally wear smalls or maybe mediums in shirts, tops, dresses, coats, etc. I almost always take an 8 in pants, skirts or dresses. But I often wear a 6 in jeans.

I’ll let you know if things run true to size and what size I’m wearing in the photos. But if you have any additional questions about fit, don’t hesitate to ask in the comments.

My Try-On Session

I started off with jeans and a sweater. After all, that’s probably how most of us dress for winter. I’d been wanting a pair of new straight leg jeans to wear with booties and I knew Talbots’ generally fit me well. And I wasn’t disappointed.

By the way, I apologize for the bare feet. Ugh! I always try to ask for a pair of shoes or two to try on with things, but the sales associates were just so busy. I didn’t want to ask them to bring me something I wasn’t going to buy. And I had worn boots to the store.

high waist straight leg jeans in marco wash (wearing size 6 regular) // These jeans are also available in petite and long fits, but, while I’m 5’8″ and sometimes need a long, these are plenty long in the regular. I have plenty of room to add a chunky heel with them. These came home with me. The high waist straight leg jeans also comes in a medium park wash, a black wash (Talbots’ black jeans really keep their color well) and a grey wash. You’ll find curvy fits in each of these, too.

cableknit Shaker stitch sweater in deep cerise (wearing size small) // This thick 70% nylon and 30% lambswool sweater is oh so soft and pleasantly warm. I appreciate the slight mock neck and the stitched detailing on the front of the sweater. It comes in misses, petite, plus and petite plus sizes.

faux wrap a-line skirt in plaid (wearing size 8) // I love the myriad colors in this trending but classic plaid skirt. Here I’ve topped it with the deep cerise sweater, but I have three Talbots cashmere sweaters from seasons past that will all work beautifully and create very different looks with this trim skirt. I’ll top any of those sweaters with my denim jacket when wearing this skirt. And I’m looking forward to wearing it with this classic cotton denim shirt, too. I’ll probably wear navy tights and my brown riding boots. (Oh, yes, I did bring this skirt home!)

Just so you could see the versatility of this skirt, I tried it on with another sweater.

button cuff ribbed turtleneck sweater in pale enchanted blue heather (wearing size small) // This cotton/nylon/rayon turtleneck sweater has lots stretch in it, so a small gives me ample room. It comes in nine colors.

Next I slipped the jeans back on again to show you this ribbed turtleneck sweater with the classic corduroy blazer.

classic corduroy jacket in indigo blue (wearing size 8) // I absolutely adore this corduroy blazer. It’s a finer whaled corduroy than my red one from Loft. And I especially love it in the rich burgundy, but they didn’t have it in my size. But this blue is beautiful, too, and so versatile. (I’m having to sit on my hands to resist buying this in the burgundy!!!)

Next I shifted gears a bit and tried the velveteen Chatham ankle pants and a cashmere turtleneck for a relaxed but festive holiday look.

velveteen Chatham ankle pants (wearing size 8) // These 80% cotton, 20% polyester pants just don’t have enough stretch in them for me. I’d need to size up to a 10 in these, but I didn’t try one on. The sales ladies were crazy busy and I didn’t have the heart to ask them to get one. And I’m afraid the 10 would fit better in the legs and hips, but be too big in the waist. At any rate, if you order these, consider sizing up. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to come in a curvy fit, which is what I’d really need.

cashmere perfect turtleneck in red pop (wearing size small) // This cashmere turtleneck, on the other hand, fit and felt beautiful. It’s available in several other lovely colors as well. Yeah, it’s cashmere, so it’s pricey. But I manage to keep my cashmere sweaters for years and years, and I’ve noticed the colors that Talbots produces theirs in never look dated.

wool blend a-line skirt in black, red pop and ivory (wearing a size 8) // I need some skirts for church this winter, so I also bought this red, black and ivory one. But I won’t be wearing it with my ivory legs! Ha! I’ll add some black tights and boots or booties to this look. Also, the red turtleneck I’ll be wearing it with is a little shorter.

Hampshire ankle pants in camel (wearing size 8) // I keep trying these on because I really want some camel pants. But these are not the ones for me. They fit too snug in the leg for the look I want to achieve. I think I’m going to order these refined bi-stretch barely boot pants in camel heather. That’s not exactly the color I was going for, but maybe it’s actually a better color for me. I have high hopes!

Again, I changed directions and tried on a pretty black dress appropriate for holiday parties and other finer affairs.

velvet jacquard sheath dress in black (wearing a small) // I was determined to try this dress on even though they didn’t have the medium that I knew I probably needed. Sure enough, the small shows all my lumps and bumps and creates a few more to boot! Ha! But it is a pretty dress. And I can just about guarantee it would look lovely in the right size. This is one of those dresses that I don’t understand why they didn’t make exact sizes anyhow. What’s with that? And one more thing, does that little slit in the front bother anyone else??? That’s the one detail that has kept me from ordering it.

The minute I started putting the next few outfits on I began plotting a winter trip. Ha! Y’all. These snow, ski, winter, whatever clothes are a-maze-ing.

colorblock “ski” sweater in red pop multi (wearing size small) // This darling and warm sweater feels like such high quality. It’s 39% Viscose, 38% Thermolite Polyester, 23% Nylon for cozy-all-day wear. I love the functional zipper pocket on the sleeve. This nifty pullover would be great for a ski trip, but shoot, you could just sit in front of your own fire and wear it, too!

Personally, I imagined wearing all of this pretty winter outdoor-wear to Williamsburg, Virginia, for Christmas. Or maybe Asheville, North Carolina. Or Vermont…ahhhh… If you’ve got the venue, girl, you need these pretty things! Hahaha!

Soho Ponte leggings in black (wearing size 8) // Talbots has come so far with their leggings. I think these are some of the best around at this point. I love the little zipper at the hem. These pants fit just right and they don’t ride low in the crotch like so many leggings do on my 5’8″ frame. #littlevictories The leggings come in several other shades, too.

fleece lined pants in black and red pop (wearing size 8) // I do not know what inspired me to try these fleece lined pants on, but my oh my! Yeah, this is when I really started dreaming of a winter vacation. I know the photo doesn’t necessarily look like it, but the pants fit beautifully, feel amazing and really make you itch for snow!

chalet fair isle sweater (wearing size small) // Just another fun and cozy sweater to take on that winter vacation! This one is soft and I love the vibrant colors with the black and ivory.

faux fur down puffer vest in black (wearing size small) // I did end up buying this chic winter vest. I had drooled over them last year and never bought one, so I saved myself the embarrassment of further drool and bought this one. Ha! It’s also available in red pop, pink quartz, enchanted blue and ivory. And yes, I can zip it up comfortably with this sweater underneath it.

Enchanted blue plaid classic flannel shirt (wearing size medium) // While I like this lightweight plaid shirt, I’m disappointed that it doesn’t feel more like flannel. Honestly, it just feels like a basic cotton shirt to me. None of that flannel softness. But it runs true to size for Talbots shirts (I prefer mediums for me) and this one features lovely colors.

modern ankle jeans in genuine dark wash (wearing size 8) // I keep trying this on because I like them. But I just don’t need them. And yes,you can wear them in the winter with ankle boots.

button cuff cable sweater in enchanted blue (wearing size small) // just like it’s turtleneck cousin, this cable knit sweater features lots of stretch for a comfy fit over a shirt or by itself. It’s available in a full range of colors.

Honestly, I feel like I barely touched the surface with the clothes I tried on. Plus, there are so many online only selections. I did buy a few things in the store, but I’ve purchased more online. If you have a Talbots near you, I find the best thing to do is purchase online and return to the store. I don’t know how the store associates feel about that. Ha! But Talbots absolutely expects customers to do that. How else could you try the online exclusives.
