Happy Monday, sweet friend! I hope you had a good and refreshing weekend and that you are ready to step into a new week with enthusiasm. Speaking of stepping into the new, we will be doing more of that soon here at Dressed for My Day. But today I’m taking another look back at 2021 to gain a little more understanding of my community here. I’m sharing the 13 most popular Dressed for My Day videos and what I’ve learned about YOU from my findings.

I started my YouTube channel in late April of 2020, and I’ve absolutely loved engaging with you and many more women there. In fact, in the early fall of this year we reached the milestone of 100,000 subscribers at the Dressed for My Day channel. And the channel continues to grow steadily. I’d love for you to share my channel with your friends, sisters and others. My goal, here and there, is simply to encourage and help women mostly over 50 to get dressed for our days – beautifully, stylishly and authentically – so that we can show up in a big way in our little corners of the world. If you’ve heard me say it once, you’ve undoubtedly heard me say it a dozen times, I believe every woman is significant and still, no matter what age, has a reason to contribute to her world.

And that brings me to some of what I learned from this list. Let’s start the countdown. I’m sharing the 13 most popular DFMD videos in 2021. Three of them were actually published in 2020, but continued to amass views in 2021 to such a rate that they ended up in the top ten for this past year. I’ll indicate those with an *. But that’s why I’m sharing the top 13 instead of just the top 10.

Oh, and what makes a video show up in the most popular list? Not just views, but watch time. That’s why this list is definitely more accurate than My 20 Most Popular Blog Posts of 2021. Not only did these videos pique women’s interest; they held their interest. In 2021 I posted 60 new videos. I have almost 100 in the library. These were the most popular from number 13 to number 1.

#13 – How to Transition Your Wardrobe for Retirement

I’m so pleased to see How to Transition Your Wardrobe for Retirement in this most popular list because it is one of those videos I created specifically for women in my season of life. I’ve had great viewer feedback on this video, too. Let me know if there are similar videos you’d like to see.

#12 – 8 Fall Jeans Outfits with 4 Pairs of Straight Leg Jeans

In 8 Fall Jeans Outfits with 4 Pairs of Straight Leg Jeans I featured modern jeans from four of my readers’ and viewers’ favorite stores (according to my affiliate analytics): Talbots, Chico’s, J.Jill and J.Crew. While a significant number of the women in our community have expressed their allegiance to their skinny or bootcut jeans, many of us are enjoying the new straighter jeans. But after years of wearing the other silhouettes, we’ve scrambled a bit to figure out how to wear the new cut. This video was my contribution to help us start styling these jeans with confidence.

YouTube Tip: If you haven’t yet subscribed to my Dressed for My Day YouTube channel, be sure to do that today. You don’t have to receive notifications if you don’t want to; just turn them off. But new subscribers really helps my channel reach more women. You can subscribe HERE.

#11 – 10 Ways to Transition Your Wardrobe to Spring

Is there any more welcomed season than spring? Oh, I don’t think so! After a long, cold winter of wearing heavy, thick clothing, we’re absolutely aching for a little warmth on our skin, fresh colors in our vistas and lighter, more cheerful clothing in our closets. So it’s no surprise that 10 Ways to Transition Your Wardrobe to Spring would be popular with viewers.

YouTube Tip: You can share my videos with friends through Facebook or email, and that really helps me out. Just click on the Share tab under the video. There you can select to share the video via Facebook or Twitter, to pin in on your Pinterest account or even post it on LinkedIn. Or you can just copy the link and then paste that link in an email or text to a friend or family member.

#10 – Simple Everyday Makeup Routine for Women Over 50

This video was my first foray into beauty. While I’m no expert on fashion either – just an enthusiastic researcher – I feel even less confident about sharing beauty tips or methods. So I tried to shared my tips and procedures more as a girlfriend than an authority.

#9 – How to Look Modern this Spring with a Classic Wardrobe

I talk a lot about choosing to look modern instead of trying to look younger. But that’s easier said than done, right? First of all, change is hard. So just keeping up with the more modern silhouettes and ways of wearing things can be a challenge for us older ladies. Then there’s that thing with looking like we’re “trying too hard.” Know what I mean? So in this popular video I tried to help those of use who love our classic wardrobes to create modern outfits that look fresh and relevant.

#8* – Fall & Winter Denim Guide for Women Over 50

This is one of two 2020 videos that continued to garner impressive views a year later. I think that is an indicator of how much we over 50 women want to wear our jeans with style and confidence. I really should have published another one of these this past fall, so I’ll definitely add it to my editorial calendar for fall 2022.

#7 – 7 Year-Round Wardrobe Essentials

You might be surprised that I didn’t even know what a wardrobe or closet essential was until I started blogging. Ha! I’m just confessing from whence I’ve come. But I’ve approached this venture more as a student than an expert. And perhaps the most important lesson I’ve learned along the way is that with the essentials in your closet you’ll struggle less to create great outfits for most any occasion.

While I break down the seasonal essentials four times a year, including most recently here and here, in 7 Year-Round Wardrobe Essentials I shared the garments that never leave my closet.

#6 – 12 Tips to Help Older Women Look Slimmer this Summer

I’ve discovered a lot about my over 50 sisters since I began blogging. And one of the most profound lessons I’ve learned is that many of you struggle with self confidence just as much as I do. Yes I, too, feel uncomfortable in my own skin at times. Try as we may, we just can’t escape the visuals of the “ideal woman,” and most of us feel we never measure up. Truthfully, we can’t measure up to those ideals.

So while I did indeed offer 12 Tips to Help Older Women Look Slimmer this Summer in this #6 video, I also reminded us that we must come to terms with our bodies and show up with confidence. We owe that to the people in our lives who love us and count on us. But we also owe it to ourselves. Perhaps more importantly, we owe that to the God who created us and loves us.

#5* – What to Wear While Traveling

This is another video that I need to provide a follow-up episode on. What to Wear While Traveling receives comments at least weekly. Interestingly, I made this video during a time when practically no one was traveling due to the pandemic. And of course traveling looks a little different for many of us now. The tips I shared in this video are timeless really, but I do have new garments to recommend. So watch for an update of this video!

#4 – 13 Tips to Help You Look Great in Photos

I had a sneaky suspicion that 13 Tips to Help You Look Great in Photos would be popular. I confess that I purposefully timed its publication to coincide with the holidays, when group photo ops abound.

#3 – Style Tips to Help You Hide Your Tummy this Fall & Winter

This is the second video in our list that has to do with looking slimmer. And while the other video offered tips for wearing sleeveless tops and shorts, in Style Tips to Help You Hide Your Tummy this Fall & Winter I shared tips to help us look more slender while wearing bulky fall and winter clothing.

YouTube Tip: While I always share links to available garments and accessories in the Description Box below the videos, don’t hesitate to ask me for additional links or anything you don’t find there. You can ask me in the comment section under the video or you can email me at kay@kayharms.com. I’m always glad to help or to answer questions.

#2* – 5 Mistakes Making You Look Older than You Really Are

For the second year in a row, 5 Mistakes Making You Look Older than You Really Are is showing up in the #2 spot. The popularity of this video reminds me again that as we get older most of us struggle a little to feel good about ourselves. I tried to offer real tips that can actually make a difference in our appearance, but also a healthy dose of encouragement and grace.

#1 – 16 Tips to Help You Age Gracefully

And that is the perfect segue into our #1 video of 2021, 16 Tips to Help You Age Gracefully. As I began to realize that many women are struggling with aging, I decided that we all could use a few kind pointers, but we needed a little grace even more. I do love this video, so I’m glad you did, too.

Moving Forward in 2022

I love serving you and other ladies through my YouTube channel. And I’m looking forward to creating more videos for you this year, hopefully at least one a week, but potentially more. I plan to cover beauty, fashion, inner beauty and maybe some fitness topics, too. In fact, I’d love for you to share with me what you would like to see videos about. Keep in mind that my time frame is usually about 12-17 minutes max. But if you have ideas or topics you’d like to see me cover, let me know in the comments.

Blessed for My Day

I love talking about clothes and accessories with you, my dear girlfriends. And I admit to investing in my wardrobe so that I can create pretty outfits and look my best. But I know that there are things of greater value more worthy of investment. In fact, while readers sometimes call me out for investing too much in my appearance, my goal here at Dressed for My Day is not really about investing in clothing and accessories at all. It’s about investing in you.

Who are you investing in? When you send an encouraging text or card, speak a word of kindness or lend a helping hand, you are investing in a person of great value. And you may never know how much that simple act of service and grace impacted that person. When you invest in a person you make an eternal investment because, unlike clothes or shoes or home decorations, people have souls marked for eternity.

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. ~ Matthew 6:19-21

  1. Hi Kay, I am 62 and have been retired for about 1 years now. As like you, I am an emptynester. I find it is getting harder when our adult children and partners come for a visit, which I love, but then when they all leave it really gets me down. I miss them terribly. Being a Mother for so many years and then not being needed as much, I kinda feel lost. How do you and other women handle this empty nester transition?

    1. Hi Laura, You’re so right. It is not easy. I do not do perfectly with this myself. But I tell myself some truths that help me shift my emotions a bit. I remind myself that they are where they are supposed to be now. I tell myself that life is made of seasons, and this season has purpose, too. And I have also begun a new “2nd act” venture of blogging and YouTubing. That’s certainly not to say that every woman should start a new career when her children leave the nest, but it has helped me tremendously. I also think it is important to keep planning new adventures with my husband. We have a very different relationship now than we did when our children were at home. We’ve definitely invested in our marriage more, not less, in recent years. Those are my answers off the top of my head. Is this something you think I should do a video on? Maybe as other women chime in with their responses, too?

      1. Just saw the No. 1 video on Aging Gracefully–really good pointers. I think that you are even prettier now than in your younger days. Would love to see more videos on sustainable clothing, natural beauty products (no animal testing), style essence combos, fashion tips for petites. Thanks, as always, for all your hard work and may 2022 be a better year for all of us.

  2. Kay
I love your blog and videos. Would you ever think about doing a video for plus-size ladies? You are so beautiful and tall you look like a model! I would love to see a video or tips aimed at more average looking people occasionally.

  3. Good morning
As a mother of 2 grown married children, my husband and I have been empty nesters for over 25 years.
We have been happily married 57 years.
We stay busy, with our volunteer work and hobbies.
Twice a month we try to have a date by spending time together.
I just started your Joseph bible study with a girlfriend.
Kay, what a gift that has been to me.
I would love to see more on us empty nester and what is working for us.
    Happy New Year
    Warmly
    Judy

  4. I would also love to see a video for empty nesters. My kids live on the opposite coast (moved there for graduate school and stayed). Not sure they’ll be moving back soon either. Retirement has been a blessing, but this pandemic has not. It’s harder to make friends since we moved to a new city now. You just can’t join a group. We’re trying to make the best of it.
I absolutely love your thoughts for the day and bible quotes. I’m going to start sending out notes of gratitude to people who have touched my life. Thank you for being you!

  5. Every family has its own dynamic, and what feels”right” for one may feel “wrong” for another. Making the transition to being an empty-nester can be difficult. But I would suggest that it can also be a time of pride—satisfaction in a task well done. You did it ! The kids are now independent, fully functional adults ready to establish their own place in the world. Now: take this new stage in your life and be YOU , not just “mom.” Hugs to all.

  6. I was only recently informed of your videos so only now am I watching the older videos. I just watched the 8 fall jeans video. First, I have loved all the previous videos I have watched and feel like I follow your style but have learned new tips like the neutral shoes and graphic t-shirts. In this video I especially like your curly hair. I am a J.Jill, Chico’s and Talbots shopper (77) and love it when I can find new trends in other stores.
The first video I watched was when you introduced the Johnny Was jacket kimono. I just fell in love with it (I knew of this brand but don’t own anything by JW, a little expensive for me). I looked for it on your link and found it at Saks for $325ish on sale for $125ish. However, it was SOLD OUT. So bummed. I will keep looking.

    1. Hi Sharon. Thank you for saying hello. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. I do love that Johnny Was kimono, one of those unique pieces I’m glad I invested in. I had a gift card to buy it but I still had to make the choice. Keep your eyes open and I’m sure you’ll eventually find a similar one at a good price. You also might check resale places like the Real Reel.
