on Saturdays we talk about Inner Beauty

Welcome to Dressed for My Day and our weekly discussion of an inner beauty topic. On this Memorial Day Weekend, I thought it might be nice to reflect on the beauty of looking back and then pressing on in faith and hope. Let’s talk about the beauty of remembering…without regrets.

I’ve always been a firm believer in living without regrets. So I don’t spend a lot of time looking back in general. But I do think a wise and beautiful woman knows the value in taking an intentional glance back every so often. And I think I’ve learned the secret to looking back without regrets.

What should we look back on with intention?

  • When we remember the thing that held us captive and how God freed us, we live in that freedom and do not become captives to something else. (See Deuteronomy 5:14-16)
  • When we remember how God gave us victory over the enemy, we are fortified for the next battle. (See Deuteronomy 7:17-19)
  • When we remember the promises God faithfully kept in the past, we have faith that He will do the same today and tomorrow. (See Genesis 9:15-17)
  • When we remember how God walked us through a difficult time and transformed us in the process, we trust that He is at work in our present circumstances, too. (See Deuteronomy 8:1-3)
  • When we remember how God has blessed and provided for our family over the generations, we know that He will also bless and provide for the generations to come. (See Deuteronomy 32:6-8)
  • When we remember the great things God has done in our lives, we are more prone to call on Him today and tomorrow. (See 1 Chronicles 16:11-13)
  • When I remember the ways of God that I read about in His Word, then I trust Him with my life today and my joy returns. (see Psalm 77:10-12)

So is it wise to look back occasionally? Absolutely. But I suggest that when we look back on our lives we always look for God’s fingerprints. The only way we can paint the past accurately is within the framework of God’s character, His ways and His Word. If we look back on the past and leave Him out of the picture, we risk becoming either prideful and delusionally self-sufficient or resentful and isolated.

As we look back and remember, let's be sure to look for God's fingerprints. The only way we can paint the past accurately is within the framework of God's character, His ways and His Word. Click To Tweet

How could looking for God’s fingerprints on the images of your past or the history of your family help you to see things more clearly? If you were to look at past situations by hunting for evidences of God at work in them, would that help heal some lingering wounds or perhaps change your perspective in some other way?

Do you have thoughts you’d like to share about today’s topic? I’d love to hear from you today! I tend to take as much time off from work as I can during the weekends, so I may not reply to your comments unless you ask me a direct question. Please remember that I try to keep this space free from controversy, so let’s stay away from the topic of politics or other divisive issues.

  1. Thanks, Kay. As you have so wisely informed us, there is value in looking back and reminding ourselves of God’s fingerprints in our lives: past and present. I know that it causes me to find joy in whatever situation confronts me. It helps to remind me of all of the reasons I love and trust the Lord.
The Lord give you and your family a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.
