I enjoy attending holiday performances such as The Nutcracker ballet, a stage performance of The Christmas Carol or Handel’s Messiah. Whether you’re looking forward to your church’s Christmas cantata, your grandchild’s Christmas piano recital or a night at the symphony, these are all great opportunities to put on something a little special and more glamorous. Today I’m sharing an elegant combination of velvet and lace for a holiday performance.
Can you tell I was freezing when we took these photos?! Don’t worry. I have a coat on later in the post, but I wanted you to see how this black and plum/purple come together for an elegant, festive holiday pairing.
My lace pencil skirt, velvet wrap top, butterfly envelop clutch and pearlized pave necklace are all available at Ann Taylor. Just this morning (Thursday) Ann Taylor announced a one day sale where everything is 50% off and shipping is free. This is an online only sale. They have so many other beautiful clothes for holiday performances. So even if this outfit isn’t your cup of tea, be sure to check all their holiday attire here.
My earrings are some my son gave me last year for Christmas, but I think these crystal pearlized studs would also complement my pearlized pave necklace very well. (By the way, I couldn’t include this necklace in the shopping widget below, so if you’re interested in it be sure to click through the link here.)
I thought the butterflies on this envelop clutch added some interest and variety. And on my nails I’m wearing Not So Bora Bora-ing Pink, part of the OPI Iconic Infinite Shine collection.
I recently purchased these black microsuede pumps through Target.com. They are extremely comfortable, but they definitely run large. I always, always, always wear a 9.5, but I needed the 9 in these, and they’re not snug at all. If you’re looking for some low cost, but comfortable black dress heels, I recommend these with no reservations. But if you want a lower heel, I’d recommend these slingbacks.
As I’ve mentioned here before, I can’t really justify buying a new coat since I live in such a warm climate. This one is probably 15 years old and it’s by Jones New York. But I’ve really enjoyed the faux fur collar. It does add a little extra warmth and some interest. So if you like the look, I highly recommend you check out this one by French Connection. Right now Lord & Taylor is having their Friends & Family sale, and with the extra 30% off you get with the code FRIENDS, this stunningly beautiful coat goes from $320 to $134.40. I’ve also added a few other beautiful dress coats from the Lord & Taylor sale to the shopping widget below.
By the way, Lord & Taylor is also giving you 15% off almost all beauty and fragrance products. That alone is worth hopping over there and browsing, especially if you’re giving any beauty or fragrance gifts this Christmas. And remember, shipping is always free at Lord & Taylor.
By the way, this wrap top is not actually a full wrap top. And I easily added a little safety pin to the inside of the top for…well, safety! As I recommended in my post on How to Put Together Your Own Holiday Party Look, I would never suggest you sacrifice comfort if you’re going to be wearing your festive attire for any length of time. But I felt completely held together and comfortable in this lovely velvet and lace duo.

Remember, the sale prices are not reflected on the widget above, but Ann Taylor is offering 50% off everything with free shipping…online only…Thursday.

Blessed for My Day
I love the idea of Jesus being our good Shepherd. I can be such a sheep! I need someone to pull me back to where I belong every now and again. I need someone to watch over me, to lead me to greener pastures, to provide safety for my soul so I can rest. Jesus also keeps me from the enemy of my soul, goes searching for me when I stray, and leads me to safety when I venture into danger. Most importantly perhaps, the Good Shepherd knows my name. I am precious to Him, and He will never let me go. What do you love about Jesus as our Good Shepherd?
So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. ~ John 10:7,9-10
You look lovely Kay. I am seeing a Broadway play this weekend and I always dress up. I will be wearing a velvet top and black pants.
Oh I’m so envious!! Have fun!
Kay, this is a gorgeous outfit! Personally, I love to dress up, and this outfit would be a great one to add to my “holiday closet”. The blessed for my day really spoke to me. Thanks so much for continuing to share scripture applications along with outfits and tips.
It’s my pleasure, Patty. And thanks for being a faithful reader! ?
I love to dress up! I live on the Gulf Coast. I’m always the most dressed up person at church, very casual here. Kay, you look beautiful ?
I agree people dont get dress up anymore. I remember going to Christmas shows w my patent leather shoes and a dress. My daughter wont even give a dress or skirt half a look. Im dressing up for Christmas eve service this year.
Beautiful outfit! Love the plum color. If only I had somewhere to wear this!
I completely agree with you. My mom and I attend the opera three times a year. Many people do dress nicely, but there are always people in jeans! That bugs me! Why have we turned into such a casual society? In my job, there is a dress code, but some businesses are fine with perpetual casual days. And this generation complains about not being taken seriously? I was always told it was important to dress the part. What happened?
Stunning look, by the way. Your color pairings always make me look at my clothes twice; i have so many more combination choices. Thank you.
